How Do I Stop Using Differin?

I have been using Differin gel 0,1% for about 10 weeks now and I am quite happy with the result. I am hoping that by week 12 everything will be back to normal. However, I was thinking about what happens after I get off the medication. Does the acne come back when it gets out of your system? Can I just stop using it or should I wean myself off it for let's say 2 weeks? Also, how long does it take until my skin gets back to normal and I can go out in the sun without fear and use sunbeds again?

You cant just stop using it it is something you have to continue to use to see results. If you stop using it within about a week or so you be right back where you started.

^ this is correct. Acne is a continuous battle and it needs a continuous battle intell either you grow out of acne. 10 weeks of use the is highly unlikely or you correct you hormonal imbalance which cold be causing your acne. Differin wouldn't help with hormonal balancing so that wouldn't have changed. Or you could have allergies to something you are around daily or eat frequently or use often. I suggest going to a allergist and see if you have any intolerances to see of there is something you are reacting too I also suggest going to see your obgyn or a endocrinologist and getting your hormones looked at to see if that is the culprit.

Those are my ideas for you anyway, did your dermatologist not tell you that topicals are a daily routine to stay clear? I mean antibiotics and topicals needed to be taken daily to ensure that you are staying clear. Your body can build tolerance levels to topicals and antibiotic. Antibiotics are very common to build tolerances too. Nothing can work forever.

But until you figure out what the culprit is that is causing your acne then you will never be able to stop medications without acne issues happening again and again.

Also how old are you? Female or male?

I am 26 year old female. The breakout was hormonal to start with. I have taken accutane before and was clear for 10 years. After thst I have been on the pill for contraception reasons and although I have been on and off of it for years this time 1 month after I stopped I broke out all over my face. It was not that bad but I just couldn't bare the thought that acne came back! So my derm prescribed differin. I cant bare the thought of applying it for life, especially since it has been so many years that I was break out free and didn't even bother applying any kind of cream at all, my face was doing perfect on its own. I was just thinking of stopping differin after the 12 weeks that it's supposed to show the results. You think it's ikely that I will break out again?

Sorry to say it but yes, I think it is likey you will break out again. The 12 weeks is a time period you should expect to see results in. No acne medication besides accutane is a set course and you would expect to be clear afterwards. Most acne medication like antibiotics and topicals you stay on them as long as they keep you clear or your body builds a resistance to them. Usually after that you move to another one, not stop using it all together. The only thing keeping you clear is the topical once that is gone acne is likey to return. Sorry hun

Not 'forever'' but until you stop the internal problem that is causing it (such as out of wack hormones).

However, even if I stop using it how long will it take for my skin to come back to normal ( breakouts or not) and I can use sunbeds or sunbathe safely?

Acne lesions typically recur for years, and so acne is nowadays considered to be a chronic disease. It has been shown that microcomedones significantly decrease during therapy but rebound almost immediately after discontinuation of a topical retinoid. Hence, the strategy for treating acne today includes an induction phase followed by a maintenance phase, and is further supported by adjunctive treatments and/or cosmetic treatments. Therefore, a maintenance therapy to reduce the potential for recurrence of visible lesions should be considered as a part of routine acne treatment. However, it is important to emphasize the lack of definitions surrounding the topic. One possible definition is: ˜Maintenance therapy can be defined as the regular use of appropriate therapeutic agents to ensure that acne remains in remission™.

Since 1973 it has clearly been shown that, after a controlled intervention phase with oral antibiotic and topical tretinoin, patients continuing to receive the topical retinoid in a controlled maintenance phase experience a significantly lower relapse rate. Several controlled trials have now been performed with topical retinoids to show the value of maintenance treatment, with a topical retinoid decreasing the number and preventing the development of microcomedones in different severity grades of acne.

To date, adapalene regimens have been most extensively studied as maintenance treatments for acne in four controlled trials (one on micro comedones) and two uncontrolled trials.

How do you stop using acne antibiotics without breaking out? Is it even possible?
