I have just relocated and had to change dermatologists towards the end of my course. I have been on 40mg for my entire course, I weigh 50kg. My original dermatologist recommended five months of treatment but my new derm is recommending a six month course. I am wondering if there would be any benefit to extending my course for a month? I am really ready to be done with this medication and am pleased with how my skin looks. I haven't had a breakout in a month and a half, I still have a small patch of acne left over from before I started Accutane and some relatively mild hyperpigmentation but I think that will go away with time. Anyway, I just figured up my cumulative dose and if I stop at five months I will have taken ~122mg/kg. If I continue for six months, I will take ~146mg/kg. What do you all think--is it worth it to plug on another month or ok to stop at the five month mark?
Thanks for the reply!
While I feel like I have tolerated Accutane well overall, it has made me feel kind of crappy for several months and I don't want to take it a day longer than necessary. I'm also not convinced that another month will make a difference when I have all but met my cumulative dose. With that said, if I start breaking out again in six months, twelve months, fill-in-the-blank, I will always wonder what would have happened if I would have taken it the extra month.
I couldn't wait to get the hell off accutane because of how bad it scarred me (seriously, EVERYTHING SCARRED?) As soon as I met the cumulative dose I went off. Two weeks and haven't broken out at all, my breakout was due to rapid hormonal shifts I'm not worried it will happen again. But when you have to wait 6-12 months to treat your scars, you want that month to count towards that countdown. At least for me anyway.
