At 25, I went to the dermatologist for the first time last month. She put me on minocycline, and also discussed doing accutane. She said it was totally up to me, and I decided to put it off and think about it. The antibiotics I would say are working but not completely. I'm still breaking out, and sometimes they can be painful.
I talked this over with my mom and explained some of the side effects. When I mentioned the more serious/rare side effects she was totally against me doing it. But I am desperate and I have no life because of my acne. I decided that I am going through with it. There are far more success stories on here than failures and when you're in a position like me where you don't leave the house at all, I am willing to take a chance!
I go back to the derm in a couple days, and hopefully after all the tests in the next month I will be on accutane!!
Itll change your life for sure! Im about to go on a second round myself next month. The first time I had amazing results and it was a great feeling.
Hi CWR24,
How severe was your acne the first time? Did you have any back/neck acne? My son is on day 55 of Accutane and it's been tough. PLEASE tell me it will be worth it. His back is so raw and bleeds easily, lots of scabs and open sores. I know it sounds gross, but that's how it is right now. Is this normal? The derm says it is but I don't know. He is a really good derm w/loads of experience (he treated me years ago) but still, I have my doubts. It's very depressing. Anything you can tell me that will give me hope?
thanks
I'm about to get back into the iPLEDGE program and go on my second round of accutane as well, and I CAN'T WAIT! It's the only thing I ever had long term results with. I honestly never thought I'd get bad acne again after taking it because my skin was clear for so long, but unfortunately it didn't work out that way. I'm almost 25 myself, and I'm ready to be done with acne. Best of luck to you! I think you'll be very happy with your decision

do you have cystic acne?

do you have cystic acne?
I have cystic acne on my chin and sometimes on my cheek, but the majority of my face is covered in smaller blemishes. When I started my first course of accutane, my acne was slightly less severe than it is now. I don't think I was getting as much cystic acne back then.
I have cystic/nodular acne on my jaw and slightly under, and smaller blemishes all over my cheeks. My derm described it as moderate to severe. My acne was always, as I would describe it, as moderate. But it all of a sudden got really bad back in January. It was so severe on the bottom half of my face it looked like I had a "beard" if acne. It has calmed down much since then but I'm just not used to these huge cystic pimples that come in clusters all along my jawline. I was just used to getting small blemishes here and there and occasionally getting a big one on my chin at that time of the month. So I am looking forward to accutane!!

My acne wasnt to severe the first time nor is it now its just very persistent and on my face / back. I absolutely believe that itll be worth it in the end for him. Day 55 is still pretty early in the treatment so people dont see results until the end. I started seeing a great deal of improvement around month 3 especially with my back. Accutane stops oil production so you skin can become pretty tender like you describing on his back so I would say yes that it normal. Once the acne heals it should all go away. Overall even though Accutane can be a tough few months I think the results are going to be worth it.

Thank you. It's just very very hard for us both right now. The skin on his shoulders doesn't seem to want to heal, or if it does, it takes forever to finally dry up and heal. I know it's still early in the treatment for him, so I keep telling myself that. He's a young teenager and should be enjoying his life right now but he can't really. I am hoping that in month 3, we start to see some visible improvement and healing. Hopefully he won't be one of the people who doesn't improve at all until the end. His skin seems to be purging so much right now. I'm wondering if it will ever stop He tried to go swimming today but couldn't even do that because his back and chest were painful and burning.

Im sorry to hear that. I hope it starts working form him real soon. Hopefully this will be the last time he has to deal with this! Keep us updated though.
How long have you been on Minocycline for? I did a course 2 years ago until last year which had amazing results to the point where i barely thought about it anymore. for about 9 months after my skin stayed alright but since i have broken out again. I'm 2.5 months into accutane now and am thinking about aborting it due to some of the side effects i have had (hairloss, skin extremely dry (i wouldn't mind this so much if it didn't cause 2 HUGE folds on my forehead), joint pain, extreme back pain on 2 occasions, extreme scarring (from places where I didn't even know I ever had acne from no scarring at all before hand). However, the accutane does seem to be helping a bit. Thing is, think about it carefully, and make sure you have tried everything else. I regret that I didn't look into it more before I started.
This will be my second month on minocycline. I have seen minimal results. My derm wanted me to go on accutane. At this point I want to go on it too, I'm just so fed up of this and I already have scarring. I have no life, no job, no social life because acne makes me so embarrassed. Plus it's not safe to be on antibiotics for a long period of time.
