I'm less than a week into taking Accutane, but I'm already experiencing some dry skin peeling.
Currently, I wash with a Cetaphil cleanser in the morning and after shaving at night. Both times I immediately go over with Cetaphil moisturizer. Then, Aquafor on the lips both in the morning and night.
I'm curious if washing my face both in the morning and at night is too irritating for the skin. It makes me feel (psychologically) cleaner to wash twice, but it may be detrimental to my progress in curing the acne.
For those Accutane veterans out there, could you weigh in on this? Thanks.
Hi, I am currently on Accutane and have used both Cetaphil and CeraVe cleansers. They are similar. I wash my face twice a day and it has been fine. I've found that I must use a washcloth and exfoliate gently (keyword: GENTLY) or else my skin flakes and peels a lot but some people may find that to be too harsh. I also have to moisturize a lot.
I use Cetaphil moisturizing cream in the morning and shea butter at night. If you feel washing twice a day is too harsh, you might try using Cetaphil without water; that is, just apply it to your skin and wipe it off gently with a tissue. That way your skin feels clean and lightly moisturized. I've also read about people using natural products to cleanse their skin that are supposedly very gentle, such as honey and essential oils.
I use aquaphor and Vaseline on my lips frequently. Dr. Dan's Cortibalm is also recommended but honestly didn't do much for me. At one point my lips were really bad and my dermatologist recommended hydrocortisone. I applied hydrocortisone ointment to my lips and it helped tremendously. But, if you decide to try it make sure you follow the instructions on the label; you can use it too often or for an extended period of time.
Good luck to you!
I just started with claravis today and I've been using the Lerosett wash, mask and moisturizer for a week and it hasn't dried out my skin at all so far. I'll continue with this until my skin becomes too dry but I doubt that will happen in the first month because I'm only taking 20mg a day.
I wash my whole body with Cetaphil morning and night, and follow up with the regular moisturizer at night time, and the SPF 50 face moisturizer or la roche posay SPF 60 for dry sensitive skin in the morning. Seems to be going good so far!
Good luck with Accutane
Once the accutane really gets into your system, you won't even feel like you need to wash your face or even hair. Unless I'm getting really dirty, I barely even have to wash, much less scrub. I'm on about day 95, currently taking 80mgs a month. Weird thing, I was drier the first month on 40 mgs than now on 80.

I don't quite understand this. Why do you feel no need to wash your face? Do you use moisturizer? Sometimes I wonder if the Cetaphil moisturizer or cleanser are causing break-outs.
I did a 7 month accutane course last year and I used CeraVe foaming facial morning and night and used CeraVe moisturizing cream morning and night. I had no flaking issues or no drying out what so ever. My issues were more the lips. Getting those under control is really difficult. Like maybe impossible. I used bag balm and Vaseline and hydrocortisone ointments and Carmex. I needed to switch off and on between all of them to contain a really chapped lip. It's really hard to imagine just how dry your lips get. Just when you think that there is no way you could get dry somehow you do. Crazy. Also you might want to pick up some eye drops. Eye balls tend to dry out really badly. Even more so if you wear contacts

All I wash with is Dove unscented for my face and body. I put whatever moisturizer samples I grab at the doctor's office on my face that's rated SPF 30. It's Eucerin.
