5 months ago I was taking 25mg of spiro, and upped the dose to 50 on my 3rd month. I started getting decently clear. All the cysts went away, all I had were a few white heads.

After 41/2 months, I upped it to 75mg, to see what would happen. After 3 1/2 weeks of 75mg, I noticed I started breaking out with cysts again...and then one day, I almost fainted on my way to school. So I reduced it back to 50mg, hoping it would go back to the way it was.

Unfortunately, I'm still getting cysts..Not as painful as before, but are reoccurring around my jawline.

What should I do? Up the dose back to 75mg? Or stick with this?

I just really don't want the acne to come back? Has my skin resisted spiro?

Thank you :)

Are you changing your regimen on your own or at the advice of a physician? I wouldn't mess with it without a doctor's consent. To cure cystic acne along my chin, I've been taking 50 mg of spiro in conjunction with topical treatments and washes for like 9 or 10 months. I cleared up almost completely around my 6th or 7th month. My derm allowed me to cut down to 25 mg and I started breaking out around my chin and mouth a week or two after the drop. On her advice, I bumped the daily dosage back up to 50 mg for a month and have been slowly clearing back up. I just got engaged (so I'm visiting with a lot of friends and family, will be taking pictures soon), and am terrified of cutting back down when the month is over. I guess the spiro had more of an effect on my acne than I thought; I had assumed the topicals were doing all of the work.

My advice to you would be to 1) consult your prescribing physician! And that 2) sometimes less is more. I've heard people have good results with spiro at the 25mg - 50mg range. It may take awhile, (it took me 6-7 months) but you will clear up. Good luck to you!

Okay, I'll def call my physician. I would like less to be more, but I'm scared my body isn't responding the the lesser amount "50mg" as its used to...

And topicals actually never help me haha. It's actually been the spiro all this time.

I'm no physician, so don't quote me on this, but since spiro controls testosterone levels in the body, I don't think it's a matter of building up a tolerance and needing to up your dosage to get a better result. I think it's more about finding the right dosage that puts your hormones in harmony. Everyone reacts differently to hormones, so what's best for you could wreck havoc on someone else. But I could be wrong!

I should also mention I went on birth control to help with the cystic acne. I take loloestrin fe, but it had no effect on my acne. I'm very sensitive to hormones, and this is a very low dose pill. All of the generic birth control brands that I had tried previously gave me horrible pain in my breasts or had an adverse effect on my mood.

What topicals have you tried? I'm using Aczone in the morning and Ziana in the evenings. The Ziana is supposed to help with my redness and possible scarring. In the beginning, I was using Finacea in the morning with Aczone but my derm cut it out of my regimen once I started seeing dramatic results. The Finacea reduced inflammation. I use Sumaden for wash. My moisturizer is aveeno but my derm does not recommend it (she thinks it's too oily), but I love it so much and can't give it up Everything else she's given me has left my skin feeling so dry. So I just try to use less of the Aveeno.

I've tried sooo many topicals. And honestly, I don't have that much redness...Just cystic bumps that dried out, but are chilling underneath my skin.

They aren't painful, but are just 'there'.

And yeah, I don't want to use birth control at all. I tried it and it made me go crazy. I wasn't myself. And it made me break out a lot!

I just hope I find the right dosage! :(

Reading this gives me hope :) great advice for the OP

I started Spiro 4 and a half weeks ago and am having the worst breakout with it, I keep questioning myself going upto 50mg but I don't want to seem impatient. I am praying the 25mg helps within the next month so I can up it and hopefully get fantastic results.

Thank you!

Don't worry, I definitely still broke out when I first started the spiro (and it made me have to pee all the freaking time!) but after about two months I started breaking out less, and my breakouts were healing faster. I had less cystic stuff and more regular pimples that come to a head quickly and heal. Again, just about no breaking out, just superficial acne here and there that healed in a day or two and did not leave any marks. I *hope* your results are similar or even faster! My doctor told me to be patient and it definitely paid off. Now I'm at the point where I'm getting microdermabrasion and peels to heal my uneven skin tone.

Just be careful when getting off of the drug. I did break out when my dosage was cut in half (my doctor warned me that this could happen).

Lol, my doctor said my mistake was using all 75mg's at the same time in the morning and told me to go back on 75 like I was 2 weeks ago and take 25mg a.m. and 50mg. in the evening.

So hopefully that helps. I have 4 huge cysts on the side of my face and Im missing my clear face.. :(
