Hi! I am hoping to find some help on a tough decision! I have been on 100mg of spiro for 8 months. Two weeks ago (after still breaking out with giant cysts EVERY month around the 10th day AFTER my period starts) my Dr. bumped me up to 150 mg. My question is- how long should I wait for the results?? I am at that horrid 10 day mark now and, like clockwork, 3 new erruptions I have an appnt. with my dr. on March 3rd, which will be one month since the increase to 150 mg. I was going to go on my 3rd round of accutane if this didn't work, but I'm not sure if I should wait another month and see if it improves? Anyone have any previous experience??
1) a THIRD round of Accutane? If you're not dazzlingly clear after a second round it will NOT work for you.
2) Have you had your hormones tested? This can help shed some light on other hormonal issues. You may have more going on than just elevated testosterone.
3) Have you been tested for PCOS? Spiro is often used for PCOS but you also need other treatments concurrently. Also PCOSers generally need higher dosages of spiro (150-250)
4) Are you using the brand-name Aldactone or a generic version? If a generic, which one? (Qualitest, Amneal, Sandoz, etc.). Unfortunately in hormonal treatments, sometimes the generics just don't work quite as well.
5) Are your "eruptions" in the exact same spot every month, or close to it? When you've had acne for a while certain pores become "impacted" and are UNABLE to heal even with all the right treatments. If you're getting them in the same spot you need a few cortisone shots...that is the only way to really fix an impacted pore.
6) How is your diet? Are you eating a lot of dairy or a lot of carbohydrates? Both dairy and high amounts of carbohydrates SPIKE TESTOSTERONE. For example, 100mg of spiro works for me, but I also generally eat dairy-free and low-carb. I have seen that women with dairy and carb-rich diets are exacerbating their hormones so much through diet that even a high dose of spiro isn't effective.
7) Are you taking the spiro with food? Are you taking half a dose twice a day?
I think you should stick with it, your body might need this higher dosage for it to work properly.
This also means you may have to wait another 1-2 months for optimal results.
Don't give up
For me, 200 worked!
Thank you so much for the info, at least this gives me some hope!
Green Gables, I am really just wanting to go on accutane for some relief.......i know that the past 2 times, it did not clear me for good, but while im on it, i am clear. At this point i don't get to be spotless at all. the few days before and during my period that i am clear, i still have red spots from old breakouts. i have had hormone testing done many times- all fine. i eat very low carb, and a regular amount of dairy. i take Qualitest brand of spiro, and i am on 150 mg as of feb. 1. I take (2) 50 mg pills in the am and(1) 50 mg pill in the evening. Trust me, i have pretty much thought of every possible cause and solution. thanks so much for any advice.

I would really recommend switching to Aldactone. Several users on here have had problems with the generics. It will cost you $10-$20 more a month but it will probably be worth it.
