Dry red eyes from Accutane? Temporary?

Hello!

I'm on my second time on Accutane, 40 mg/day, and it's only been 10 days. My first time was in 2009 for 9 months.

The first time I was on it, I didn't experience any dry eyes.

However, I had lasik 9 months ago and from that, I was told from my doctor that I would have dry eyes (as a usual symptom of lasik) but I would have dry eyes longer than other lasik patients because I had been such a long contact wearer prior to the lasik. (I wore contacts since I was 12 and I'm now 26)

So I was using RefreshPlus drops on a daily basis for my dry eyes from the lasik but it wasn't that bad.

After accutane treatment, I noticed that I have to use more drops during the day than usual.

Now I'm reading that some people have dry eyes permanently from accutane and I'm FREAKING OUT.

Has anyone had the dry eyes symptoms but it was just temporary??

I saw one post about it but never saw any updates to whether the user's dry eyes went away or not.

I'm going to stop my dosage immediately and see what happens. I'll update as well for anyone else who might be reading one day.

Thanks!

It may or may not be permanent, depends on how much you take. Considering it's your second course, I'd say you problably have a bigger chance of permanent effects.

Hey, my dry eye symptoms weren't temporary, but i'd figure i should reply. I went on accutane when i was 15, it's been 14 months now, and I still have dry eyes. After several eye doctor visits and several perscription eye drops, I had to get little plugs inserted in my eyes. They block the hole that tears drain out of. They worked pretty well but dissolve after 3 months. Mine have dissolved in the past month so my eyes are getting a little worse again.

yeah, that probably wasn't reassuring but my eyes were really really really bad while on accutane, quite severe. So i'm probably the exception.

I would definitely suggest taking fish oil supplements, and three times a week doing warm compresses with a wet towel for 10-15 minutes. Also, some good drops to take at night at called Celluvisc gel drops. They come in individual eye droppers. You can get them at the drugstore.

I hope your eyes get better!

Well. It's been only 10 days so I hope that it won't be permanent...crossing my fingers...I wouldn't even mind going back to the dry eyes I had post-lasik but pre-accutane

I really appreciate you taking the time in replying though! Really! Any response would be better than no response...even if they aren't as positive as I'd hope they'd be. I'm really really sorry to hear that you still have dry eyes. That's kind of crazy that they had plugs inserted in your eyes. Does that require operation? And funny you should mention the Cellusvisc gel drops! Because I had to take that for a month after my lasik procedure. I'm going to try to grab those. Thanks so much for the suggestions and I hope that you dry eyes are just temporary, even if it does seem like it's taking a long time. You never know!!! Thanks!!!

"Xeroderma, dry eye syndrome, arthralgia, and possible exacerbation of eczema, were considered to be infrequent but probable long-term side-effects. The findings of this study indicate that isotretinoin in the treatment of acne is a safe drug, with no serious long-term side-effects."

I guess dry eye isn't considered a "serious" long-term side effect otherwise these 2 sentences sound like they contradict one another.

Just as an update. This is my second day of not taking accutane. My eyes are still red and dry but I bought refresh liquigel which is helping a lot more than the little cases of refreshplus. But it's quite viscous.

Also, a couple of days ago I suspected I had like a cyst/stye on the white of my eye but I wasn't really sure until today when the red went away temporarily and I could tell it was a white bump. It's freaking me out more. I'm researching eye specialists right now to make an appointment. Hopefully it'll go away. I wonder if it's associated with the accutane.

I'll update daily. If anyone else has anything else to say on the matter, again, much appreciated!

It's now the third day after I've stopped taking accutane.

I didn't use drops as often today which is nice and my eyes were white at one point. I just washed my face and got some facial cleanser in my eye so now it's a bit red. The cyst is still the same size and I made an appointment with a very good ophthalmologist for next Wednesday. I'm hoping that the cyst will be gone by the time Wednesday comes by. Doesn't bother me but I mean, I don't want a bump on my eye either.

Here's to hoping tomorrow will be even more improved!

Hi there! I am sorry to hear that your eyes are becoming dry. I know my post may not be the most positive, but I thought it would be beneficial to share. I was on accutane in 2008 and took 40 mg BID for 6 months. It worked wonders, but I consistently had dry eyes throughout the therapy. I still have dry eyes and find it the most irritating when I do not receive sleep (I am a nursing student so this is pretty common lol). I use the blink gel tears once in the morning and once at night. This usually takes care of the dry eyes and allows for complete symptom relief. I hope everything works out-best of luck!

Hi there! I am sorry to hear about the stye-I have had quite a few of those boogers! They are pretty painful and annoying. When I went on accutane, around the 3 month mark, I would frequently get these. I visited my dermatologist and explained that the moisture produced by your lacrimal gland helps to lubricate the eye and keep bacteria from colonizing. However, on accutane, your eyes often become dry which can allow for bacteria to colonize easily and case blepharitis, or inflammation of the eyelid. The best advice I can give is to apply a warm compress (such as a washcloth) 3 to 6 times a day which can help open the pores and allow for a more rapid outflow of the bacteria as well as speed up the recovery time. They usually lasted about 3 days for me, and I was instructed not to pop them (I know it is tempting, but sometimes just applying pressure to the warm compress would allow them to pop). I hope this helps, and best of luck!

HEY GUYS, I HAVE AWESOME NEWS!

Sorry for not updating everyday like I said I would. So I went to the opthamologist (sp?) and they gave me steroid drops to use four times a day, every day for two weeks and then twice a day every day for the last two weeks (so a total of a month's usage). In one week, I noticed that my eyes weren't as dry anymore (but they said that the dryness may come back after I'm done with the steroid drops because my eyes are naturally dry from wearing contacts over a decade and then the lasik procedure.

The red disappeared within two days of using the drops and the doctor said that I would have the bump on my eye for a long time. When I asked how long, he said, "Long." That's when I got melodramatic and asked, "Like. Forever??" And he said, "Yes."

Apparently, your skin thickens itself up to protect itself from the dryness or something like that. But to be honest, it's been over a week and the bump is gone, the redness is gone and I barely use eyedrops other than the steroid drops. I'm soooo happy!!!

I also only used accutane for only so long so the dryness was more likely temporary than permanent if anything. But anyhow, just an update, and thanks for everyone replying here!

Would appreciate if anyone could respond to this.

I am 11 days out from stopping accutane. Used for 2 months 30 mg first and 20 mg later. Stopped because the dry eyes freaked my out.

I am yet extremely thirsty and very dry. My lips are gettting better but yet chapped and have dry eyes. Not quite sure if it is too much better. But feel a slight improvement.

Just curious, when do the dryness symptoms actually resolve or is this something permanent. Positive or negative responses would be highly appreciated.

Guys, dry, red eyes ARE TEMPORARY!! I have experienced it for myself. Redness goes away within 3-4 months (after you take the last pill). Just be patient! Eye-drops WON'T HELP, they don't do shit! You just need to WAIT!

Believe me, redness and itchiness WILL GO AWAY! I was so worried that I wouldn't have normal eyes, but THANKS GOD, it was temporary. Here is my dosage, I had only one treatment course of accutane:

6 month - 60 mg (20-20-20)

+1 month - 50 mg (20-20-10)

+16 days - 30 mg (20-10)

TOTAL: 6*30*60+1*30*50+16*30 = 12780 mg

CUMULATIVE DOSE: 12780 mg / 68 kg = 188! (120-150 is normal).

May God help you all!

hello,

i had a friend take it and she had really sore red eyes, i think some of her eyelashes even fell out but they came back and all. I dont think its permanent, it can be but i think its unlikely. Because its drying everything up, you will have sore red eyes.

I saw a girl in the waiting room of the derm with sore cracked lips and red eyes (they kind of looked like tomatoes :( ) and because i had been considering taking it, i asked my doctor (who i have been seeing forever) and she just told me that the girl was very upset because she had been prescribed by a doctor, and 3 weeks later he ended up leaving the clinic she went to and he didn't even take her blood work. Apparently she was only 95 pounds and had been given a really high dose . But, the doctor didn't say anything about it being permanent, no, i really think these are transient. Don't worry. use eyedrops.

I stopped the treatment now for 3 months, and I still have severe dry eyes. I can't go outside anymore and I can't sit in front of the computer for long periods like usual.

I talked with my ophtalmo. and he said that it's possible that the effect is permanent and it seems like it's unlikely to go away.

Take Away: 3 months of taking (30mg/day) accutane and I completely wrecked havoc on the remaining of life.

thanks ro/accutane/currane

hi dry eyes..

i was on accutane for only a month at 40 mg...i started to experience realllly dry puffy eyes..went to the ophta told me that the accutane attacks all oil glands including your eyes. it shrivels the oil glands of your eyes and since your not getting the oil your eyes need, its also a breeding ground for bacteria. well i stopped the accutane immediately.

what he told me to do was warm compresses twice a day for five minutes each time..to get the oil flowing again. i did this for abt a month and it did help, but didnt make it 100%..so then he put me on restasis eye drops. with the use of restasis and doing warm compresses my eyes are abt back to 90%..i dont even do the warm compresses that much anymore, only when my eyes get irritated from my make up..

pls look into restasis, it really did wonders for me...good luck!

Wow this was exactly me about last year. I had LASIK surgery and then a year later was thinking of going on Accutane. The only problem was that my eyes were very dry from LASIK so in the end I didn't want to risk it and make them worse by going on Accutane.

I was always a little hesitant to try Restasis because I thought it can cause some pretty scary side effects but now I might have to look into it again. My eyes aren't as bad as they were last winter though. I think time, omega-3's, more sleep, and eating more fruits and vegetables may have helped.
