Holistic healing is always the safe way to go vs drugs. A orthodox doctor is in reality nothing more than a LEGAL DRUG DEALER.
You guys should all go to NATURAL NEWS .COM , you may learn something . (=
That was an informed post about the medical industry. Thanks. I am a big fan of the peoples pharmacy website, too. Its a good format for giving feedback on natural cures. Have you looked into helminths for Accutane damage? Specifically the human hookworm therapy? Since many of Accutane's side effects seem to be related to immunological damage, including Crohn's being the big one that Accutane users suffer from (but also gluten allergy, arthritis, lupus, et al.) perhaps the hookworm's ability to calm the immune system can be of great benefit. http://www.foodsmatter.com/natural_medicine_comp_therapies/helminthic_therapy/articles/ht_success_stories.pdf
I may do this!
I am hardly dismissive about Accutane's dangers. And no, I've never taken Accutane. I've been around here for....(counts) 7 years now and have read hundreds and hundreds of accounts of Accutane. Lots of people were helped. Lots of people weren't. It does not replace personal experience, but I am qualified to speak on the matter in as far as what I've seen others report - and to lend support (on both sides) when they need it.
I am also saying that I personally understand the frustration of knowing about severe side effects, taking the drug anyways, and suffering them. Abilify, by the way, lists nearly every single mental health possible side effect as Accutane, plus a majority of the physical ones, and a couple of bonus side effects, as well. As far as scale goes - Abilify and Accutane have more in common than just starting with the same letter. Yes, my side effects did go away. Most people who have the kind of side effects I did? Theirs don't. It's permanent.
So I'm not talking out of my ass when giving this support.
Your support is appreciated.

There does need to be a movement within the medical community to inform patients of the risks of Accutane more fully - something I have never denied.
Simply because I (or you, since I can assume you do not have 100% of the experiences I have had, either) have not had the absolute specific experience you have does not mean I cannot share my own experience and attempt to support you. I would have missed on out years of support had I demanded that only those who had been through exactly what I was talking about try to help - and I imagine the same folks would have missed out on support from others, too.
This is a support forum in which, yes, I can come in here and give support to people, even if I have not personally experienced it. If that were the order of these forums, very few of us would be able to interact outside of a specific forum or two. That'd be a damn shame.
And yeah, Accutane might on the surface have "helped" some people. In fact if I had had cancer and taken Accutane for that, I might not have even noticed its long-term effects, in stead attributing them to the trauma of cancer. Read many of the message boards on post-chemo cancer survivors...In a similar way, people with severe cystic acne see the semi-cleared condition and are so grateful that they are unaware of the trade they just made. I appreciate your support.
Had we been cared for by our doctors we would not be here, in fact the majority of us should never had been offered this drug in the first place - but we all know that.
I now look. feel and live like a (elderly) cancer survivor - or post chemo patient.
Its the reality of our lives now. Its been two years and my condition is only worsening day by day.
We are all throwing around theories and ideas but none of us have actually managed to reverse these effects from what Ive read - some have managed to get some issues in check but nobody here has said they are 100% as they were prior to taking it.
What hope is there?
I sit here in agony day after day knowing in the back of my head there is only one way out of this and it breaks my heart.
I had an amazing life prior to and even while taking accutane - But within 4 weeks of being off it everything had changed for what now two years later seems like it will be forever.
I'll pray that you 1) don't have these severe side effects like most of us, here. And 2) That you somehow become more aware that this IS a dangerous drug and that these side effects are real and that the seriousness and actual long-term risks were not adequately discussed with most of us. The only Accutane users without these life-altering effects that I have met, are those who don't realize the damage yet and think that their new state of being is simply part of "growing up" or in some way linked to their acne alone. It's really sad when chemo patients are told time and time again by doctors (supposedly the best and brightest 'healers' among us) that their depression after chemo is caused by the trauma of going through a life or death situation. B.S. dude. The fact is, the FDA and it's counterparts all over the world are filled with people who either came from a job with big pharma, or will end up moving into a job with big pharma. It doesn't take a genius to do that math either!
The point I was making is that virtually all drugs/medications are dangerous and if they given to enough people the statistics will show a certain % will suffer severe adverse reactions.
The rest of your post isn't even making an argument. You are agreeing that Accutane is dangerous, that it is being over-prescribed and therefore a hell of lot of people are suffering severe side effects including committing suicide. Oh no, don't blame the drug though, these people are just a minor statistic; its to be expected when millions of people are taking it, let's not worry about it.
Its like saying; oh there's this model of airplane that has been found to have a defect that causes it to crash, don't worry though, although there's absolutely loads of them out there it only happens to a small percentage, so let's not concern ourselves; it's bound to happen.
I wasn't really trying to make an argument... I was really trying to highlight the fact that just because some people have bad reactions it doesn't mean the medication is completely unsafe and should be banned. Given for the right reasons in the right circumstances with close monitoring minimises the risk, but nothing in life is risk free.
I'm also not saying we shouldn't worry about those who do suffer - in fact drug companies and doctors should be doing as much as possible to help people with long lasting side effects recover. To me it seems like you fail to understand or accept that basically all medications carry some risk of adverse reactions/side effects. Hence if enough people take them someone will be in that 0.001% (or whatever the % is) of unlucky people and have a bad reaction. That doesn't mean the medication is necessarily unsafe.
In the same way that some people have allergies which means the smallest trace of peanuts in their food could kill them....... doesn't mean peanuts are dangerous.

I'm sorry. I can see where my previous posts were insensitive. My apologies. Please keep sharing. We are listening.
CUT , POISON , BURN = ORTHODOX MEDICINE
If quoting from what you've read in books makes you feel better, carry on.
Personally, I think you get off on this... Just like I used to.
I'm not gonna lie... I have some fucking awful days where I feel so depressed I don't know how I manage to get out of bed.
But, this doesn't help.
We all know this already.

Again, I was not told that the side effects could be permanent. Many of us weren't. In fact my doctors are still in denial that there is even a possibility of that fact even when faced with the reality of my condition. It must be difficult for them to admit that the pharmaceuticals that they rely on to "heal" people, are actually more poisonous than anything else. They are afraid of lawsuits, I understand that. But I was not warned. The doctors just didn't even know it themselves. Your drug situation was different, I am sorry but you cannot come here and talk about things you only infer from reading others posts and then make statements about "the broad spectrum". I appreciate your intentions, though. Thanks anyhow.
Matt - I was under the impression that you were doing okay.
It doesn't sound like this is the case at all.
I found no relief with liquid iodine, but I thought you had the majority of your issues under control.
It's pretty disheartening to know that you're not doing well.

Ha IndigoRush yeah , it's not that I get off on this , it's that I want other people not to go through
what I did , and educate them , that's my main objective , but it does feel good to let off some steam once in a while , after
all the B.S I have been through over pathetic pimples.

I am doing a lot better. What I said originally was that iodine has helped tremendously in many ways, and that it has done the most out of of anything toward dealing with side effects but I also specified that it wasn't a fix-all, did I not? I still have occasional joint pain. I still have food allergies and other immunological response issues too. But the iodine helps with mood, fatigue, and even joint pain, some.
The comments you quoted here were in response to someone's post about how Accutane users should essentially own up to their decision and that also felt like it was glossing over the severity and duration of the side effects experienced, as well as the number of people effected by them. I often run into this attitude from non-users who don't believe it, and from users who are in denial of the reality of the situation because they want so very much to believe that Accutane is a miracle and that they won't be one of the statistics.
Have you looked into helminthic therapy? It is in Devon or London, the company who does it. It's expensive treatment ($3000) but lasts for 3-5 years. Here is a source of success stories: http://www.foodsmatt...ess_stories.pdf Please note that the primary condition that it cures is Chrohn's disease which is the most common Accutane-induced disease. Either way, many of our side effects could be linked to the immune system not functioning properly, right? I am going to bite the bullet and do this therapy. It is low-impact and low-risk, albeit expensive as I mentioned. I'll keep you informed about my success or lack thereof. It usually takes several months to start seeing results. I will let everyone know how it goes.
I was pleased to hear that you would be focussing on your music. You have real raw talent...

Good to hear back from you.
I've not heard of the therapy you mention.
My current goals/ideas:
Get counselling - Should start having weekly appointments soon
Use Juicer and try to eat better (had four McDonald's this past week!!)
Take time to do nothing. I get really stressed and the best thing would be for me to just lay in bed with some music in the background
Focus on the positives. Everything get's shit on by 'life' at times. It's positive that the documentary is coming out, and things haven't exactly got any worse
I agree that I have talent in music, but my depression can really kill off any motivation and drive I'd normally have.
I've felt pretty crap all day.
Had a really bad shift at work last night (was very anxious and exhausted).
I have a big 12-8 shift tomorrow and find it hard to relax even now.
I'm trying to shift some stuff so I can pay off money that I owe and then I aim to increase my social life and go out more.
I really need a holiday (vacation for you American's) next year. It's been a while
Do any of you personally know, or have read about peoples side effects that cleared by themselves in time?
I've searched google but havent found any success stories which is really disheartening.
It's been over 2 years since i took accutane and my joints are killing me and my hair, face and body and are extremely dry (I could list a whole page of other side effects i've had but i'm not in the mood to do so).
I already take glucosamine, chondroitin, msm, hyaluronic acid and drink lots of water, all which seem to have abosolutely no effect.

Things that helped me:
Joint pain:
- Vitamin D
- Hyaluronic acid
Energy, coldness (thyroid):
- Kelp supplements (for iodine)
- Selenium
Digestion, gut health:
- NOW Supper Enzymes
- Probiotics

Im the same 2 years post exactly.
Things that have only gotten worse over time - hair and skin has become increasingly drier & brittle over time/the hairloss is worse - no regrowth and it just keeps coming out non stop. handful upon handful every day.
My skin is no longer pale - it has turned a yellow/brown colour and my face is a different colour from my body - I never go in the sun.
Supplements & diet have not helped. Nothing has helped.
I've given up and accepted that my life will never be what it once was.
I fear my body may never heal.
My reason for taking accutane was oily skin and a shit loads of sebum in all of my pores. I had lived with it since i was 11/12 and tried everything else. After reading posts on bodybuilding forums saying how good accutane was and how it had changed their lives, I decided to give it a go. (I didn't read any posts about long term side effects just posts that mostly mentioned chapped lips and joint pain while on the drug, which cleared after completing their course.)
Little background info:
I'm 25 years old and took took two courses of accutane with the last one finishing May 1st 2010, so almost 2 years ago.
I never drank or smoked while on accutane and always had at least 8 glasses of water a day.
Here are the side effects I have because of accutane:
Back problems with nerve pain going down to the top of my ass.
Neck crunches when moving my head in different directions and nerve pain down the left side of my neck.
Elbow pain in both elbows.
Left knee popped a few days ago (non exercise related) and my leg just give way.
Extreme tightness in all of my muscles (especially my chest) which ache and burn for days after working out and never seem to fully recover.
I noticed not long after starting accutane how tired and heavy my muscles felt and how easily out of breath I became while running, I also noticed I couldn't run the distances that I previously could with ease. (no change as of today) .
Stomach noises and an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach. (this occurred roughly 8 months after finishing accutane and still happens frequently)
Heartburn everyday for the past 4/5 months.
Diarrehoea, if I eat foods with too much sugar or gluten. (Never had this problem before accutane.)
Extreme sweating. (I will sweat buckets just walking, even when it's freezing cold.)
Hair has receded at my temples and thinned all over.
Lots of white hairs started popping up towards the end of my second course and I have even more now.
Crazy amount of split ends with very strange shapes to them, I've tweezed out a shit load of hairs that are not straight or curly but are like zig zag shaped.
Hairs growing in areas where I never had any before. (Above my eyebrows, upper arms, upper back, just below my hairline and on top of my ears.)
Dark circles under my eyes where the skin has thinned and I can see veins as well.
Wrinkles underneath my eyes. ( I can see wrinkles in different parts of my face which I never had pre accutane).
Skin marks and cuts really easily since accutane.
Skin is always dry and oily no matter how much water I drink or omega 3 enriched fish I eat.
Can't handle the sun anymore because the brightness kills my eyes and the sun makes me burn and freckle easily, whilst before I never freckled from being out in the sun.
I also noticed moles appearing on accutane.
Gums have receded and some of my teeth are now see through because the enamel has gone.
I've had 2 blood tests in the past 6 months with no abnormal results.
That decision i made to take Accutane still haunts me to this day. I often fantasize about travelling back in time to stop myself going anywhere near Accutane.
Most days i feel extremely depressed and suicidal, the only reason that has stopped me from ending my life is my family because i know how much it would hurt them.
I finished watching Six Feet Under the other day and after the finale i just lost it. For some reason It made me think about my family finding out i had killed myself and them crying at my funeral.
I really feel for everyone of you on here and have had tears in my eyes reading your posts, it kills me to think that nothing can be done to heal us to what we were like pre accutane.
If ever anything helps me out in any way you'll be the first to know.
Holy shit our side effects are almost identical.
I too have the bizarre white hair growth covering every square inch of my body - forhead, all over cheeks, back, upper arms, etc
This started at the same time my skin became inexplicably dry and tight. My hair became more brittle & dry and fell out more.
I too have wrinkles - dehydration lines covering my upper cheeks, forhead etc
Has your face darkened?
No my face has actually got more pale, but it does get red easily which it never did before. I'd say the only part of my face which has gone darker is underneath my eyes.
Have you got wrinkles on your hands and feet aswell? I've noticed wrinkles not only on my face but on my palms, tops of my fingers (where they bend) and on the sides of my feet.
Another thing i've noiced, no matter how much water i drink my urine is never fully clear like it was before accutane.

Yes I have. I have painful wrists and Ive noticed deep lines that have formed almost halfway up my hands, the skin has thinned on my hands so veins and tendons are obvious and the skin has many more wrinkles than I did even 6 months ago.
The lines all over my face from the dryness/tightness
I suspect my face has darkened due to the dehydration in my skin.
I drink about 2 L's per day and it seems to flush through ok, but its as if it filetrs straight through without absorbing anything into my body - I drink and very soon after need to go.
Im eating alot of fresh fruit each day as well as an avocado with my brown rice sushi for lunch in an attempt to nourish my skin & hair, haven't noticed anything.
How's your current condition with skin & hair?
Any progress?
And what was your dosage & tx length?

I Bought my accutane from the internet and self medicated for 2 courses. I took 80mg per day most of the time but i remember taking 100mg per day towards the end of my first course. Both courses were 3-4 months.
I had read lots of posts about people saying how important the cumulative dosage was so i've taken quite a bit of accutane. I weighed around 215lbs at the time i took it.
I eat mostly healthy food and have done even before accutane. Some of the foods i eat are steak, chicken, lamb, fish, (wild salmon, tuna, Cod, sardines) blueberries, fresh pineapple, brown rice, oats, broccoli, cinnamon, honey.
Never have dairy and rarely have foods that contain gluten.
Do you workout at all?
These days I'm realy struggling to exercise like i used to as my joints are too painful.
shit really?
I was on it 12 months, prescribed by the derm. Cumulative dosage was around 14,400 mg's. 40mg one day, 60 the next. clearly given too much for too long.
Im a slim 53kg's.
Im the same with my diet, more good than bad - I believe diet is the only thing that is going to heal our bodies - that and the fact every tissue renews in 7 years, so Im wishing upon a start that within 7 years this will all be over..
I too have really hollow eyes now, the skin has thinned and sagged. Ive lost the supporting tissue from under my eyes. I have black rings particularly my lids & inner eyes. Very hard to cover.
The dryness is actually worse around my eyes ( as well as my upper cheeks)
I have been depressed over a year and have not exercised. I used to do alot of walking
I really hope the documentary (Dying for clear skin) airing tonight in the UK on BBC3 will show interviews with people who have had all sorts of side effects from accutane and not just focus on the depression people can get from it.
I don't know whether the filmakers son Jesse had any other side effects apart from depression, but if he didn't then the makers of accutane (Roche) will just say his depession (which lead to him taking his own life) was due to his acne and had nothing to do with accutane.
It would be great if Jesse's family and everyone else who has been affected by accutane can get a positive result from this documentary airing.

He had sexual dysfunction.
I'm pretty sure that is mentioned in it, but i've not seen it yet.
Just watched my friend Will, who is pretty much the star of the show, on BBC Breakfast.
They showed an advert and it looks really good.
They've done some good promoting for it so I hope it gets a lot of attention.
I'm on there talking about side effects though, and hopefully I'm not the only one
Stef
Hi - the consultant, Neill Hepburn, who was featured on today's BBC introduction to the documentary 'Dying for Clear Skin' was my dermatologist at Lincoln Spire. I had two rounds, the first being only successful for one year. Admittedly after looking into Roaccutane more, I do feel that the prolonged side effects were not emphasised as much as they could have been. And, like you Stef, being only young (I was 16/17 for the first round) I didn't have any reason not to believe my derm, especially as we went privately!
I will be watching tonight - I think it will be very informative. I have a friend who is currently looking into using Roaccutane, although I feel she may fall under the category of those being offered isotretinoin for a milder case of acne. I do hope we can help to inform more people about the side effects of the drug.
Incidentally, I am looking into homeopathic help for long term side effects, such as onset of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), anxiety, low libido, and dry eyes. Without going all through this very long and very informative thread, would you highlight anything in particular which has made the greatest improvement for you? I too am committed to fixing what this drug has done!
Thanks,
Vanessa
