Live to regret, I know exactly how you feel. It's been 4 years since I stopped accutane. I didn't have many side effects while on it. Just expected dry skin, lips. Hair loss developed during 4th month. It started shedding, itchy scalp, change in texture, even colour became so washed out and shine totally disappeared. I continued for another 2 months as my dermo told me it will stop after treatment. Since then I spent hundreds of pounds on shampoos, treatments ,private visits and tests. My hair never stopped to fall out. I shed loads every day in the shower, I stopped brushing it as it was making me hysterical seeing my once beautiful, dark, wavy hair, come out in clumps. Itching makes it even worse, as it constantly reminds me of what is happening to my hair. My skin also looks horrible. Acne came back, I also developed severe back acne which I never had before. My skin started to wrinkle progressively since the treatment. My confidence is no existent. I tried many supplements and diets with zero effect. I turned myself into zombie mode, trying to survive each day and not to think how I used to look and what I did to myself just because of some moderate acne. I am not even mentioning joint pain, fatigue and anxiety. My only advice is to try not to think about it to much. I spent days on research and trust me I do understand scientific writing. In my opinion accutane done something to our bodies which is not reversible, and certain symptoms lessen with time, some appear over time out of nowhere. I don't think synthetic supplements are going to help. They just put pressure on our livers furthermore.
If you want to do anything to ease your symptoms colon and liver flushes could improve how you feel and make some of the symptoms more manageable.
At the moment I stopped trying to understand what is happening to me. No one will understand how we feel, as much as they try. Hold on and remember you are not alone in this.
thanks for your advice. so what do you normally eat on your gluten-free diet (aka what to avoid)? also im afraid taking more vitamin A will be bad for me, so i avoid multivitamins. or is that only DURING accutane usage? also how do you supplement your diet with iodine? and how long after your gluten-free diet did it take to see results? also the only vitamin you listed that i do not take is K. what benefits do you think youve gotten from this? any other advice from your naturepath youd be willing to share? thanks if you have time to answer any of these questions.
The gluten-free diet I followed was also sugar free and dairy free for three months. Now I eat some natural sugars like honey, etc. You can eat: meat, green vegetables and grains that have no gluten like millet and quinoa. Also for sweets, I use stevia, an herbal sweetener. I felt results within 36 hours. Big results. Increased energy, lessened muscle fatigue and pain, and healthier feeling. Others I know did it too. Same results, and they hadn't even done Accutane...I followed a book called "Body Ecology": https://www.google.c...chrome&ie=UTF-8 there is a section with recipies. I don't bother with all the supplements she sells, but the book was fantastic. She actually suffered from anti-biotics poisoning as a result of acne treatment. Anyhow, it will break everything down for you. That is the first thing my Naturepath told me about and it worked. You sound like you are definitely celiacs dude, so you should definitely try it. I tested negative for celiacs by my "doctor". Don't rely on tests. Just try it. And the sugar thing matters. As far as dairy, quitting that has been linked to acne clearing and even a cure for autism. Something about gluten in wheat and the casein in milk causing the immune system to attack the gut, rendering it useless as an absorber of nutrients. Thus we get sick. The US Airforce recently compared blood samples of recruits from the 1950s and the 2000s. They found evidence that gluten intolerance is four times more prevalent today as it was in the '50's. It has to be chemical fertilizers, poor soil and any number of other chemicals in our environment that is causing this.
Vitamin K has many benefits. It is one of the fat soluable vitamins, like A and D. Since the intake of both A and D are effected by Accutane use, I thought I'd try K too for bone and heart health among other things. Actually Accutane, because it is synthetic, causes vitamin A deficiency rather than simply overdose. So I supplement with beta carotene in a food based form. It seems to help with poor night vision and other things. Fish oil -the real stuff, not the highly processed with caustic chemical stuff - is something that helps with dry eyes and other things. It contains a balance of A and D, as well as Omega 3 and 6s. This is all basic stuff that our bodies use to produce everything else downstream. that is why when gluten interferes with the uptake of nutrients, you feel so lousy. Beta Carotene, anyway is only converted to vitamin A in the body in amounts that are required. Everything extra is flushed. There is no chance of overdose. Combined with E, it is beneficial. B vitamins are necessary for so many functions. I never take a MULTI vitamin though. Mostly they contain lower quality ingredients, plus everything at the same time isn't good for absorption. Many of these things compete with each other for absorption and you end up flushing a lot of them out. They always make me feel nauseous too. I get high quality vitamins and minerals and don't usually take them all every day. My NP said that I should take high doses of vitamin D in order to increase levels in my system for a couple months, then stop for a couple months. I'm still figuring things out. Vitamin C and zinc usually knocks a cold out before it starts if I double up on it at the first sign of a cold...
As for the iodine. I take, every day, a liquid form. Like 4 drops in water or whatever your bottle says. It isn't a cure all but because it treats the thyroid, it helps to bring hormones into balance. For some reason, Accutane disturbs the thyroid from what I understand of it. I have noticed that my eyes look more calm, I am not bloated anymore, and I feel much more energy and happiness. My moisture in eyes and lungs has increased a lot from iodine. Can't explain it, but I do know that iodine has been around and used successfully for hundreds of years. the Japanese have virtually zero hypothyroidism because they eat a lot of sea kelp which contains iodine. You might look for a kelp-based form. Also, I would recommend taking vitamin E with Selenium at the same time. Selenium protects the thyroid from any potential damage from immunological thyroid issues and iodine. I also suggest that you do some research on your own.
If I think of anything more, I'll share. Good Luck.
Thanks again...
what do you use to season your meat and vegetables and quinoa with? ive been using some old bay... i want to use soy sauce but im not sure its gluten free... also i wanted to use Sofrito tomato cooking base on some beans the other day and although there was no wheat in the ingredients list it said "contains: Wheat" on the bottom? how is this possible? is this still bad for me?
do you consider the amount of sugar in ketchup negligible? or is it still bad? also do you eat fruit? i love fruit...
any other advice on how to cook good-tasting meals with some moderate variety (how to season them) without using sugar or wheat?
thanks again... im in the middle of a severe cold right now but once im better i will report back if i think the non-gluten diet is helping
Powdered and capsule kelp does nothing for me, i feel it's a waste of time. The liqua kelp might be different because it contains potassium iodine, which is synthetic but it's what they use in nuclear radiation fallout to protect the thyroid. The guy that recomended that said 3 drops a day and thats easily enough. I cant comment on it's effectiveness because i haven't really bothered with the liqua kelp as i've been taking capsules. Caps are a waste of money in my opinion.
Heavy duty liver protectors as well, the big guns, milk thistle isn't gonna do much whilst i'm taking this cod liver oil, so stronger than that.
Radioactive iodine is a different product than normal liquid iodine. I started with a kelp liquid then switched to Lugol's brand iodine. It's been used for a couple hundred years now. What do you mean, the "big guns"?
I've been experimenting with natural cod liver oil, taking 2ml twice a day and boom within 10 minutes, face gets tight, rosacea all over my face and that pulsating burning sensation below the skin. Skin is hot to touch, dryness in my eyes, mucous membranes, dryness all over my body and my eyes look slightly bloodshot (redveins in them). I look like shit.....hair looks frail and brittle, no oil whatsoever on my face, like a drugged up shrivelled prune with a pulsating red face. Skin condition starts cracking up after about a week or so on cod liver oil, not in a good way...in a zero moisture kind of desert valley way. There is no moisture in my eyes so they sting.
I experimented with Vitamin A last week by putting a tablespoon of grass-fed butter in with my bone broth. According to this site that should only contain 7% RDA of Vitamin A. After a few days I started to begin feeling increased joint-pain and rectal bleeding started soon after.
So no doubt I have a negative reaction to particularly retinol. I thought I might be safe with butter, but unfortunately not. It tasted nice as well.
So, I guess I'm going to continue to stay away from it for the time being. Maybe in the coming months I will try and improve my thyroid, initially with Coconut Oil. It is tough though, because it breaks me out badly. If I feel my thyroid has improved I will try again.

Water does something, i'm totally parched it feels like my whole insides are drying out, so drinking 2 litres of water in one sitting has cooled me down abit. I think water has replenished a small bit of the chronic systematic dehydration. I really wanna try Hyaluronic acid as i'm convinced it will mitigate some of the dryness side effects from the reaction to vitamin A. One molecule of hyaluronic acid holds hundreds of molecules of water, so they both have to go hand in hand.....loads of water for me.

Hey Chico Esposito - I can totally relate to the symptoms you describe above when you were taking cod liver as an experiment.
I was just wondering how you cope with these symptoms regularly (with or without taking cod liver)?
I have tried endless topicals, but it seems as though the problem is deeper down. I get worsening of symptoms (the tight, hot feeling and bloodshot eyes) at different times of the day. So it can't simply be dry skin...
I have tried what feels like every supplement out there (turmeric, mepacrine, GLA, biotin, b vitamins etc. etc.) with no significant effect on these symptoms...
I am now starting to take neurontin which is for nerve pain. Essentially I am trying to kill of the terrible sensations I feel on a daily basis with this. Seems extreme but it seems logical. I wish I could kill the sensations in my eyes and face! My bodily skin feels fine...

Dude, I am tell you now you wanna expirement with certian Vit A foods that is fine, but if you haven't stopped it yet STOP the cod liver oil it will make things worse and possibly irreversible damage. There are people from back in the 80's & early 90's who did that after Accutane for thier joint pain and it was NOT good!
Have all you guys that that are going through this nightmare actually had some improvement in symptoms over time?
Did the skin/ hair issues build up gradually after tx or were they present before finishing?
I just cannot accept the fact that now my skin has done this within 6 months and wonder how in the hell I will be able to deal with the texture of my skin as it is so damaged and thin now.
Hi Evelyn - where are you now 4 yrs later with all this?
when you say your skin started to wrinkle do you mean it happened rapidly like over a few mnths?
my situation is that every pore has enlarged/ opened and they connect to form massive wrinkles that are deep and there are also fine lines ALL over my face, no smooth skin - just sick dehydrated skin that is so thin its pulled tightly over the bones of my face, the texture is rough like sand paper and chalky, ashy feeling.
I look so sick and no oil, moisturiser etc seems to actually be absorbed by the epidermis.
Its not just dry skin, its as if every cell externally is showing the damage and there are cracked lines/ orange peel texture over my entire face. I dont have just dry lips - I have DEEP lines running through my lips like I am 60 where just a few mnths ago they were plump and smooth.
The damage to my skin is across my entire body, not just isolated to my face.
Im so sick of everytime I touch my lifeless, dead hair handful's just fall out continuously.Ive lost so much I have ordered a wig and no doubt will have to cut all my hair off as its now impossible to hide.

Hey Livetoregret,
I thought I would just reply to your posts briefly. I am really sorry to hear about your symptoms after accutane, but you are not alone and there are many things you can do to help your situation.
As you appear to be going through a lot of stress and anxiety I would consider something for your mood. I have taken SSRIs and they help a lot with my overall mood and anxiety. This is important as you need to have a positive outlook on life to deal with all this. Just my experience after 10 years of dealing with things...
And definitely get some gamma linolenic acid supplement like primrose oil to help skin and hair dryness. You need to try and get about 500mg of GLA though to get the oil to come through...
I would also consider taking some milk thistle to help the liver function and livatone plus from the liver doctor. That can help your liver which has undergone a lot of trauma from the accutane...
Those few things probably make the most sense for your situation. Regarding your hair, I would review some of the posts here as people have found help from different things for their hair loss.
I think symptoms improve with time, but to some extent some symptoms remain. I still have some after many years, but everyone is different! Don't lose faith that you will not get better. You are still in the VERY early stages after coming off. That is when symptoms are at their worst. Give it a year or so and give your body some help in removing this stuff from your body with the liver supplements.
All the best.
Please post any success you have in the forum, we all like to hear that!

Oilgirl i believe the reason we react to retinol in supplements or food is because the accutane / roaccutane / synthetic retinoic acid whatever you wanna call it is in our bodies.
In people like us the accutane is stored in the cell receptors. Thats fine when it's in the cell receptor because it's contained....it doesn't move anywere. But keeping it there will mean you'll have to deal with lower level lifelong side effects like joint pain, sebborheic dermatitis (face or scalp) hair will look brittle, you'll look pale, inability to gain weight, constant cracking lips that you have to moisturise every night and terribly poor wound healing / easy scarring of skin.
Or you take the natural retinol and you get the mother of all shit storms -

It seems when you take in natural retinol it pushes the old retinoic acid out of the cell receptors and into free circulation. So it could be like the effect of taking 10,000mg of accutane in one sitting, the body reacts badly straight away, and whats explained above happens. Hair could be falling out, face turns painful red all kinds of stuff just like on high dose accutane again. And there lies the proof, it's like being on accutane again, because the accutane is still there.
Basically i just want to say the accutane is still in our bodies people [Edited image out]

I've found an amino acid that is supposed to help you detox at the cellular level. Have you looked into this Chico?
"L-methionine is an essential amino acid for healthy functioning of the muscles, heart, liver, joints, hair, nails, and skin. It is required for the synthesis of glutathione, one of the strongest cellular antioxidants in the body. Thus, L-methionine helps ensure that there are adequate glutathione concentrations in the cells. Glutathione is known to support healthy energy levels, exhibit anti-aging effects, stimulate immune defences, and promote the livers detoxification processes. Non-clinical studies suggest that it can facilitate the excretion of heavy metals like mercury, lead, and copper in the urine. L-methionine supplements also offer protection to the liver against fat build up, ensuring maximum liver functions. It also assists in providing the muscles energy by ensuring adequate creatine production. Thus, L-methionine supplements also support athletic performance and bodybuilding activities. L-methionine benefits the joints because it is being converted to SAMe (S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine), an active compound needed for joint support. Joint support is critical for people affected by arthritis, an inflammatory joint disease. Since L-methionine contains sulfur, it may also promote healthy hair, skin, and nails."
I just ordered some and will begin taking it today.
At this point it feels like I have no immune system. I got sick last Wednesday, was better by this Tuesday and then started getting sick again last night. I pretty much can't live without taking colostrum.

Glutathione is known to support healthy energy levels, exhibit anti-aging effects, stimulate immune defences, and promote the liver's detoxification processes.
I havent actually i'll have a look into it humanstate, have you tried bone broth?

Life to regret, my skin and hair never improved. I was thinking of a wig many times. I also cut my hair short so it doesn't look that bad when I wash it. The only good news is some of it must be growing back as I would be bald by now. It's really weird, feels like the hair growth cycle is shortened. It falls out and some of it grows back, than it falls out again in clumps.
Although I am not keen on supplements try high dose of hyaluronic acid ( at least 100-200 mg a day), that should help with skin dryness and tightness. Someone suggested SSRI antidepressants. I would not recommend that. Almost all antidepressants have hair loss listed as one of the side effects. I know what you going through right know is really scary, but try to focus on improving the symptoms rather than looking for solutions as that will just stress you out even more. Consider liver and colon flush. I've heard peoples symptoms improving a lot on these.

Heavy duty liver protectors as well, the big guns, milk thistle isn't gonna do much whilst i'm taking this cod liver oil, so stronger than that.

Well my mom made chicken soup recently with the bones in it and my stomach felt amazing. My digestion was close to normal and I felt really good.
But I couldn't do bone broth everyday. One I hate touching raw meat and two it's a lot of work

Jamie - the sensation you describe in your face & around your eyes - can you describe it more?
I have the most unbearable sensation in my face - a feeling of tightness and severe pressure especially around the eyes, forehead and cheeks.
I know in my case its due to the severe lack of hydration in my skin. My cheeks & eyes are sunken and the skin in stretched tight and feels as though the muscles are taught its as if all the facial fat has deteriorated. temples are sunken also.
When I started to experience this sensation was when my skin started to wrinkles and drop as there is NO hydration in my face whatsoever.
It doesnt sound as though anyone has had any real benefits/ lessening of dryness with any supplements.
I honestly think our sebacious glands have been detroyed.
Evelyn - does this describe the siutation with your skin also? BTW - How old are you?

What was your dosage/duration?
It seems quote apparent the vast majority of us were over prescribed to high or a dosage & or length or time on it.
My body externally is just drying up like an old boot so my hair is a sure fire indicator of the desert terrain that is my insides, as well as my skin.
Jen - endocrinologist says there's nothing to treat. That so many people have nodules & have no issues.
Most recent tests showed: TSH: 0.45 ( range - 0.5 - 4.5), FT4 - 18 ( range 10-20), FT3 5.4 ( range: 3.5 - 6.0) - antibodies are 46 (<60) so within normal, and Anti Thyroidal peroxidase Abs were 98 (<60) so high.
After 18 mnths of losing hair there's been minimal regrowth, it just continues to shed non stop while my skin becomes tighter & dryer and more uncomfortable everyday.
I'm concerned about mixed connective tissue disease.
Okay So reading through your posts this is what I have got! You have positive ANA, Positive Autoimmune thyroid antibodies, Postive RF Factor (Rhuematoid) a abnormal TSH ( 0.5 is 0.50), You say that Drs say many people have nodules and no issues....THE PROBLEM IS YOU ARE HAVING ISSUES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My advice to you is the same you need to research Hasimoto's and you need to go back to your Endo or find an New one!!!!! Hasimoto pts go through a hyper thyroid stage as it is attacking the thyroid, until it is destroyed and you develop a goiter. Hasimotos is a lot easier to treat then Grave's. Also Nodules in the thyroid can produce and spew TSH and cause hyperthyroid also.... Did they do a uptake scan?????

I always say I don't if I am lucky that my labs were off and I developed diseases from accutane or would it have been to have all theese issues and symptoms and normal labs....You have positive labs and symptoms you just need to get to the a phsyican tell him you symptoms, so him your previous labs and get some help, along with a good diet, exercise, supplements you will feel better, until then you won't. I think that is to bind to the food to be excreted.

Hey livetoregret -
It is hard to describe but it feels extremely dry but it must be more than that. Throughout the day I will get sensations where my scalp and face feel like they are tightening and my eyes seem to become bloodshot. I also feel my throat becoming a bit dry and my lips feeling like they are drying up even more than usual! But then these symptoms subside and I feel a bit okay (As good as I can with these issues). So it must be more than simple dryness. That I can deal with. But extreme dryness with these overactive symptoms which seem to be in the deeper layers of skin as I mention are hard to deal with. I think it could be related to blood vessels shrinking and enlarging due to different triggers. I haven't found a solution for this but I don't think topicals will help. I have done experiments with moisturising the skin during these bouts of overactive sensations and get no relief. It is clearly deeper down that is drying up.
Recently I have been getting it quite bad - symptoms remain for most of the day. I also have noticed more joint cracking. Not sure what has caused this!
I am very keen on fixing this issue. It is distracting me from my work because it draws attention away from anything I do. All I can feel is this uncomfortable, dry, tight, flushed kind of feeling...
don't take SSRIs. if you don't like how accutane his a shitload of weird side effects some of which may be permanent and no one takes them seriously, you wouldn't like SSRIs. some people have extremely bad experiences like with accutane. plus the science behind them is shit (although a rare few people do swear by them).

I can completely relate. My face feels like a kabuki mask 24/7. This has happened rapidly over the last 6 mnths.
How has it effect your skin superficially on the surface?
My scalp has also become as thin as the skin on my face and very tight and uncomfortable. have you experienced fat loss in areas? Is it obvious how thin the skin has become? I think that has everything to do with it...

Accutane is a derivative of Vit A, which is a fat soluble vitamin. Like Vit D is fat soluble and if you don't take it with a meal or some fat it won't asorb as well. Either way though doesn't matter how much you take, (people have damaged on as little as 20mg or as little as a month) what you take it with, etc...It's pure poison!

Skin condition starts cracking up after about a week or so on cod liver oil, not in a good way...in a zero moisture kind of desert valley way. There is no moisture in my eyes so they sting.
Heavy duty liver protectors as well, the big guns, milk thistle isn't gonna do much whilst i'm taking this cod liver oil, so stronger than that.

Hasimotos's can cause Raynaud's etc.... Do research!!!!

We all need a stem cell transplant
Jamie - How long since you came off it? What was your dosage/duration of time on it?I can completely relate.
Hey livetoregret,
I cam off it in September 2002. I took it for 6 months at 40mg. This is not considered to be a high dose. I may have exacerbated it by taking cod liver oil occasionnally for joint pain at the time, because I did not know any better. Also, compared to accutane, the vit a content is not terrible... Anyway, this drug can cause side effects in people who have taken hardly any, so it all depends on the person...
I don't know if I have fat loss. It is hard to tell. I suppose my skin seems thin but this is probably due to the loss of oil and hydration. I think if the sebaceous glands shrink to the point of no oil production then the skin and hair follicles get affected. I think my hair strands are thinner - possible because the glands have shrunk?
I don't know how best to deal with this other than moisturise at least twice a day, drink loads of water, take GLA and look into other supplements...
@ Jamie10
I've tried cerave myself, it seemed to irritate my skin, i react to fat in skin products... because accutane is fat soiuble...i react horribly to any oil on my face and it brings about more pain and redness. My advice would be cetaphil gentle skin cleanser in the morning washing it off gently with lukewarm water or pat dry with a towel then rinse your face under lukewarm water. At night i'd apply a small layer of 100% aloe vera gel, don't apply lots because it hardens on your face. Rinse it off in the morning with lukewarm water.
Try and get an aloe vera gel without lots of chemicals or preservatives in it, make sure it's 100% aloe vera gel, fruit of the earth do one and so do a company in the uk. The plant is also a good option
vaseline seems to be the best and cheapest thing for the lip cracking. These deal with the symptoms it's not a cure. Vittamin d3 2000iu per day did help me a bit yeah, but after a few months you should stop taking it as your vitamin D levels should be fine then.
Retinol in foods is another thing to look into, retinol in food exasperates the side effects. But by no means is removing retinol from your diet a cure, it just makes the symptoms less severe. Personally i wouldn't recommend cutting out retinol, but just be mindful of retinol containing foods and what they do to your symptoms thats all.
Virgin coconut oil for cooking is pretty good as well, dont apply it to your skin or scalp, you'll react to it. But when coconut oil is eaten it is used in the liver for energy and is one of the only oils that doesn't enter the bloodstream, as accutane is a fat soluble toxin, I react to fat in my food....oils things like that, but coconut oil is fine because it doesn't enter the bloodstream so it doesn't seem to cause problems with me.
