okay so I am 19 and have struggled with acne on and off forever, I am convinced it was my hormones since they have never cooperated. I have tried every and I mean every single avenue for a cure and nothing has helped long term. I developed candida from all the antibiotics, which has been the main cause of my acne thus far. I went down the holistic path for the first time and saw some major improvement, I am going to stick with it but I am so impatient and needed a means to control my acne short term while my gut and hormones got sorted. I have prescribed 20mg of isotretinoin to take every other day along with all my naturalistic supplements that have been helping. I was wondering if I would suffer an initial breakout/purge considering that low dose and I just went through a huge purge last month. I know no one can say for sure but I was curious if anyone had ever been on the same dosage or path as me.
I'll put my 2 cents in here. You're 19 and impatience is normal at that age. But...isotretinoin is permanent. You'll literally never be the same. I took it when I was 19 or 20 and my joints hurt extremely bad while I was on it and they never seemed to get back to normal. I also have had to wear lip balm every day, multiple times a day, since then, for the rest of my life. Not that it probably matters, but you won't be able to be a fighter pilot in the military if you take it. You'll be banned for life because of changes to the eyes.
You get my point. It's a crazy strong medication that permanently affects your entire body and there is no going back, ever. You have potentially 80 years left, and your impatience now may negatively affect the rest of your life.
Ok so now I'll get off my soap box and try to answer your question: A pretty big percentage of people get a purge when they start isotretinoin (around 1/3 of people), but it's not the majority. I got zero purge and my skin was perfect after just a few weeks. But it's possible you'll get one. Would your chance be less because you just had a purge and your dosage is low? Not sure.
By the way, 2 questions:
- What do you mean you just had a purge? Why? How severe?
- How bad is your acne and is it scarring?
