When I saw my doctor couple months ago he prescribed me Septra DS tabs. At first I was a bit lazy taking it and I kinda stopped. My cousin's father told me that his son has moderate acne like me as well and was prescribed Minocycline, and it worked like a charm for him in 1 month. So I called up my doctor to see if I can get minocycline and he approved it. I've been taking it for 1 month now and just started on the 2nd bottle yesterday. I've heard some good feedbacks from users of both minocycline and septra, hypothetically if I see no results at all at the end of the month, is it possible or safe for me to re-continue the Septra DS?
Don't switch drugs without talking to your doctor! And don't expect it to have worked already. My derm said BEST CASE would be 4 weeks to see improvement from an oral antibiotic, but for most people it takes at least 6-8 weeks. Your friend is in the minority as far as that goes. But for informational purposes, I have taken both. I can't tolerate minocycline so I can't really speak for it. I have been on septra 2 1/2 weeks now and it seems to be working well. No side effects. But it's too soon to really tell. Both are very good drugs for acne.
Ok, thanks. I will continue to take minocycline and see what happens. The weird thing is, I usually had some back acne before but now when I looked in the mirror and I couldn't feel anyhting there anymore, smooth acne free back! Lets hope that will soon happen to my face as well. The only thing I experienced was a stomach ache after taking Septra, but not with Minocycline, with minocycline, just little dizziness and blackouts getting up from laying down. Thanks for the information!
You're welcome! I also noticed that my back cleared before my face did. But I had only a few pimples on my back, whereas my face was covered. So maybe that's part of it. I don't know. Oh and one other thing...my derm did tell me that I would still break out while on the antibiotic. It just should be MUCH less and it may come in cycles (I'm a woman). So I guess we need to remember that it's not necessarily a 100% cure. I'm happy with 95% though. That's about where I'm at now after 10 weeks of benzamycin and 4 weeks on an antibiotic, and 2 1/2 weeks of Differin. If it weren't for all these pesky red marks, brown marks, and yucky shallow scars I'd look like myself again. Oh well!
I really enjoyed being on minocyclin(solodyn 105mg). It worked so well and I had the best skin ever, and then I wasn't taking it anymore and my skin became my worst skin ever! My derm put me back on mino and I took it for 7 weeks with no results. My skin was the worst it's ever been, with cystic bumps all over my jaw and cheeks and neck (which is not the pattern my acne had pre-mino). Now I'm on Septra DS and that seems to be working well, but I fear that coming off of it will just start this cycle again and leave my face looking like a giant red pimple. Antibiotics seems to only work on a temporary basis. My dad took antibiotics until he was 50 for acne... wish you the best!
