lamar,
the way you so loosely diagnose alopecia is strange, it sounds like i can have all sorts of hairloss types and fall under AA. i know you know much more than i, it just does not sit well with me, i prefer specifics... but again this is not a specific sort of thing.
i have an inkling that it is TE, i mean i am so small, 120 pounds, and i took 60mg a day for mild acne!! my derm sucks!! that is quite a shock to the body.. i kind of hope it is a small case of it.. i am ready to recover..
so you think i should try topical steiroids eh? what types have offered you success?
and what is a biopsy, i actually have no clue... ha.
insaneonthetane,
thankyou for that post!
i have done some research on propecia, and from what i have discovered it is garbage for the greater community, NO ACCUTANE VICTIM SHOULD TAKE IT!
what is oracea?
and can some one tell me a little more about finacea!
that post boosted my moral! there is hope.
allthough, i hardly have the symptoms of lamar.... so maybe this is not for me

Can't believe you actually took 60mg. I don't remember the exact dose I had either 20mg or 30mg.

The trouble is, now that i know what i do. Alopecia areata makes perfect sense knowing what i know about how tane messes with the body. I know blazeds derm believes nearly all accutane hairloss is alopecia areata.
You may well have TE and recovered over the next few months, but if it persists past a year i would bet every penny i had on diffuse AA, i know your a long way off a year yet though!!
Oracea is a microdose of doxycyclin used for anti inflammatory purposes, it blocks a large number of nasty cytokines i am very interested in it myself. Finacea is a form of azelaic acid which can be used for acne aswell, smooths the skin kind of like a retanoid, has anti bacterial properties/anti inflammatory properties so is pretty good for sensitive skin, but not always i have read some people have trouble with it. I haven't used it myself either.
As for the topical steroid, start out with lidex i think it is called in the US, it is a high potency steroid but not as strong as clobetasol propinate that i now use. If you get a reponse then you can be sure of what you have.....
A biopsy is when the derm takes a tissue sample, including a cross section of hairs, firstly to see the ratio of telogen to annagen hairs, then secondly to do staining for cytokines/t cells, in order to aid diagnosis. Like you have all been told though they can be inconclusive and i would think a month on a mid-potent steroid would be less effort for all involved.
Lamarr, I know this has nothing to do with hair but you seem more educated than most about accutane so is there a daily multivitamin that you are aware of that has no vitamin A in it, I remember reading a post along time ago by someone saying they had found one, thanks
insane on the tane,
i think you are on the right track wtih wanting to get a full vitamin into your system. see the problem is, if we put a junk load of just biotin in our systems it causes an imbalance against the other vitamins and can do all sorts of stuff. it wont absorb and be as effective for one. i take the entire b complex + biotin for my regimin.
i cant remember where, but i read a few studies on vitamin inbalance, and they mentioned biotin as one that could be more beneficial if taken with the b complex. i am not sure if you need to go as far as upping all other vitamins as well though...
I personally take a multi vit without vitamin A, i avoid it completely. When i have synthetic or high amounts of vitamin A i feel sick and have a number of mouth sores pop up.
Heres the multi vit without vitamin A that i now use, i also take biotin and the occasional brewers yeast/b complex.
bio health bio caps multivitamin and mineral [Edited link out]
Don't know if you get that brand in the US though!!
Thank you for responding, I've since found one called ebA, everything but vitamin A, it was formulated specifically for accutane users. I think I may also take Omega 3's and an additional vitamin D supplement. I also had a hair cut today and my regular stylest noticed my hair line filling back in after stopping propecia which confirms my opinions. She and everyone else in the salon also suggested using nioxin over rogaine saying in all their customers it seems to work better and they didn't sell it so they weren't pushing the product, just passing on the information I know others on here have used nioxin, I've started today.

great
is nioxin like a topical foam, pill or what.
how does it fight hairloss?
Dude corticosteroids do not make any form of hairloss worse unless you take them systemically and suffer a form of TE. They can even help in Male pattern baldness by reducing the inflammation which is a key part of any hairloss other than TE. How the hell do corticosteroids do anything to androgens? that is a load of BS. Your derm doesn't have a clue if he said that. Sure ANABOLIC steroids, but not corticosteroids, that statement alone says it all. I bet if you had stuck it out you would off seen good results. What have you got to loose if your so confident you will be bald in a years time anyway? I would of definenetly been in the same situation as you now, but 3 and a bit months of using topical steroids has dramatically improved things for me. I'm not even saying it will solve my hairloss problem but i know for a fact i have added years of my hair looking decent due to them.
You have diffuse AA ithappens it is as simple as that, the steroids were probably allowing stronger hairs to push through as rogain does.
I tell you what, why don't you test them on one section of your head?
"corticosteriods are anti-inflammatory medications that belong to a class of drugs produced by the adrenal glands. When there is overactive production of androgens, the corticosteroids can be prescribed to suppress inflammation and androgen production."
I agree to some extent that there is an auto-immune component to this yes. However, Lamarr I'm not going to take your word that I have diffuse AA and it's as simple as that. You are not a doctor nor a medical researcher, and considering even they do not have any sort of answers to this for us leaves it more wide open. First off alopecia areata diffuse or not doesn't induce the type of itching and burning many of the users such as yourself have on here. The inflamation lies underneath at the hair follicle etc. Granted my itching and inflamation has gone away a lot over the past year or so, but I still lose hair, and my skin itches too when there are changes in temperature. The thing is it could be SD due to lack of sebum production or a slew of other things we jsut do not know. I for one along with jnt I believe both had a severe shed due to cortico steroids, and NO it was not a normal rogaine shed etc. my hair was literally melting off it seemed like. Trust me the steroids were not going to work to regrow my hair or most people who use them would have an intial shed like we did. For all we know the stuff may make the hair more susceptile to androgens. Hell it could very well be the thyroid as well if that is inflamed partially. If however it is AA as you say due to a chronic uptake of leuokcytes etc a drug like Azulfidine may be the answer, but the bottom line is unless I know for sure I had AA I wouldn't risk taking it when infertility is one of the side effects. There just really isn't an answer it's quite upseting. I for one have listened to my body throughout all of this. I've noticed that I don't shed as much hair when I wake up in the mornings, and when my stomach is empty etc. We just don't know, but yes other side effects still seem to be present in many of us and it is likely auto-immune, but why and how left unanswered just leaves us all in the dark.
Anyway, I've started to use rogaine again just on the back and front portion of my head. I refuse to use it on my sides yet because that is where I have the most hair left, and if it just induces a shed, which it has been slightly, and doesn't work it would be a waste to use it there right now. I may try the grape seed extract, but I highly doubt that will work and or have any major impact in my situation. I really didn't care about any of this as much recently until I realized my back hair, yes the thickest part of a guy's head of hair, was quickly diffusing away. At this point the hair I have in the top part of my head is long gone and just too damaged to be saved so I figured I could just get a partial wig, but now with back hair quickly going away that's out of the question. I would just like to keep my side and back hair or at the very leasy slow down the loss, but even that doesn't seem possible at this point. Hell people talk about MPB on here at this point I wish I just had MPB at least that way I could keep my side and back hair. Right now I usually go outside during the day with a hat on, but as the loss in the back has gotten more extensive and scalp can be seen in the back part of my hair I now use a ski cap mostly throughout the day. haha dunno what im gonna do once things start warming up. Other than that though that's about it I would say that if the loss is anywhere close to the rate it is now in roughly 4-5 years I won't have to worry about buzzing my hair because they'll be nothing left to buzz.
The kenalog shots were working for me because the bald area above my ears have some what of regrowth now. These areas were skin bald for months but now have fine baby hairs so Im going to wait and see if these hair fall out. If they don't then I plan on getting these shots on a monthly basis. I haven't notice any reduction of shedding from Grape Seed Extract so my improvements came from these shots.
If anybody plan on getting these shots then please do some research. They have serious side effects as well and the reason I was getting them without a biopsy is because my loss was clearly diffuse AA for my derm to recognize. (Bald areas around the ear, nape loss and side burn loss) Also the left temple which had no regrowth for the longest is slowly filling in and I doubt its from rogaine.
Lamar, do you have any idea why I only shed only short and medium sized hairs?
If worse comes to worst then Oral Mini Pulse but I really hope I don't have to resort to another dangerous drug. My nape and side burns are gone...

Sorry ithappens but you make so many faulse statements, People with diffuse AA do get the burning and itching like we do, that is my whole point. If you go on hairloss forums with women who have been diagnosed with diffuse AA for the last 7 years they all complain about the itching and burning. That is my point. So straight away that is wrong. Go and google Diffuse AA and read all the threads on forum you will find the posts i mean, i have read everything.
Secondly no steroids dont do anything negatively to androgens, you obviously didn't read my reply last time. Anyway whatever again you make me feel like giving up on helping people. I am controlling my situations pretty darn well and in the last 3 months even my hairline has improved.
I'm telling you now if you stick the steroids out your hair will improve, don't take my word for it that is fine, but if in the end you do try them and they work for you i want an appology as you are possibly putting people off getting the treatment they need.
You go be bald when there is no need to be, have fun!!

funny you mention because i do have balding patches above my ears and a lot side burn loss. Forget regrowth, have the shots led to any reduction in shedding?

The side effects from intradermal shots are pretty mild, they use under 15 mg of kenalog in order to avoid any possible adrenal supression, the main side effect to worry about is scarring, but if the derm has done many shots it should be fine.
The only thing i can think of blazed is that you are recovering and your body is now replacing the shitty short and medium sized hairs with stronger ones. Are the short and medium ones thinner than the rest?
No, not really some are thin but the majority are thick hairs. Im not sure if my body is recovering because I continue to loose hair, and like I said my nape area will soon be skin bald like my ears if I don't get these shots again.
Some side effects I heard people getting were these small sized dents on their head. Luckily I didn't experience this but I think my skin thinned because of these shots.
ithappens, I think it did... I was shedding around 60 right before and now I usually shed around 20-30 a day.
Also I no longer have the itch anymore but why I do I shed then? Thanks for all the help Mark and hope you do continue to provide the crucial information we need here.
Blazed mate the underlying process could still be active then i guess, you had two rounds of shots right? you should keep getting them if you ask me.... I would have them if Chu had the time to do them, altho he says he doesn't do them because of the risk of scarring... I think it is more to do with being short on time, i only ever get to see him for 15 minutes now...
I would keep getting them for atleast a 6 month period in order to try and switch the process off for good!!
There is an active ingriedient in GSE that seems to be what aids tane hairloss victims, i'm not going to post anymore until im sure but i am pretty hopefull in the power of the grape lol.

how does it fight hairloss?
It's a a three step treatment you can buy at salons, shampoo conditioner and oil for the scalp, it is quite expensive but is highly recommended and its the only thing I have used that makes my hair look and feel preaccutane normal instead of dead looking and dry, not sure how well it will help with regrowth as I've only been using it since yesterday.
insane on the tane,
thank you for the reply and i will look into it.
lamarr,
brother, if blazed saw good results from the kenalogs and his case was clearly AA, then why not get them yourself? i understand your optimism of the grape hahaha but i am not sure man. im sure there are plenty of dermatologists out there that will give you one, chu being busy is no excuse!
oh and ithappens,
quit being a bitch! optimism and flexiblility is what we need, not stubborness and despair!! lamar is helping you, (his research is 100 % legitimate) and to immediately reject his opinion as being worthless is so lame dude. you have to be willing to flexible and try all possible remedies, it sucks, we all know, but dont let your anguish spill unto others.
Your right Daniel but at the same time i have had very little problems with topical steroids, so maybe i shouldn't tempt things as i did with accutane?
Although kenalog shots are nothing compared to tane....
Plus the other problem is, i had to go to so many derms before anyone actually realised the form of hairloss, so i would probably have to search up and down the country!!
She and everyone else in the salon also suggested using nioxin over rogaine saying in all their customers it seems to work better and they didn't sell it so they weren't pushing the product, just passing on the information I know others on here have used nioxin, I've started today.
FYI - My experience with Nioxin was that after about 2 weeks of using the scalp treatment my head was itching worse than ever before so I stopped. I continued to use the shampoo and conditioner until they were gone.

First off, no many many people with aa have no form of burning or itching. Secondly, I wasn't trying to discourage anyone from helping others I was simply stating my reaction to topical steroids you are not a doctor nor are you here to monitor anyone's situation. You completely missed the point of my last post. It's fine that you are here trying to help people and I respect you for that, but the bottom line is that to flat out say that we all have aa when in reality it could be a much more complex and somewhat different situation isn't responsible. Yes we have hair loss and other side effects, yes it's very likely auto-immune, but how, why, and what is going on no one knows for sure we can only speak on each other's experiences and you can present yours and I can present mine simple as that. If people want to view my attitude as negative and are upset because they think I am bringing down others so be it. I am speaking from my true experience, and I'm not going sugar coat it, it isn't pretty not at all. And lastly, yes you are managing your situation right now, but the bottom line is some of us are not so lucky as to have lost hair from accutane and had it stop and/or had substantial regrowth, there are many many people out there with permanent hair loss. To say that I am going bald by choice is just as low as anything anyone has ever told me throughout all of this. I've tried hundreds of things for this, and to simply state that the situation is in my control right now is ludicrous.
Fast approaching one and a half mth and hair still shedding. Worst of all, hair regrow were at a slow pace.
buddy get off the stuff NOW! I had hair loss about 2-3 months in and I listened to my pig fu&*er of a derm who said not to worry about it. If I would have gotten off earlier I may not be in the position I am now. Trust me drop the stuff now.

Dude, you didn't give the steroids long enough and people with diffuse AA nearly always have scalp burning and/or itching. Much similar to us. The hairloss is more complex but it can be treated just like AA....
I'm not gonna say it anymore but any prolonged cases over a year to 18 months are diffuse AA, it's as simple as that...

Lamarr that last post just highlights my point perfectly
