I started to lose hair about 3 months later into the accutane. I finished 4 months ago the treatment but my hair is becoming thinner and i lose a lot in shower.
I'm just waiting more months to see if becomes better but it's worrying me. I have a great deal of hair, my hair growns in full speed but now it is weak and in the top is starting to get noticeable.
Someone said you must wait from the time you started to lose hair, not the time you started the accutane. So i must wait more.
Ok i saw Chu today... concentrated more on my hair....
Asked him a few questions for you guys, he said he has never seen anyone (under his care)permanently loose a significant amount of hair other than the odd male patient who he feels may of had a bit of underlying MPB...
He still feels i have TE as i loose hair from other parts of my body and said that if i didn't have hair loss from other regions of my body that diffuse AA would be a likely option... He said that this often persists alot longer than yoru standard TE but will resolve.
And to answer a few of your guys questions. He believes that so long as you have no MPB going on then there is potential for full recovery and that minaturized hairs can recover aswell....
I'm still nto sure on his diagnosis if my hairloss continues at this pace for much longer i will try and persuade him to treate it as diffuse AA as i strongly strongly believe this is what i have...
Congratulations, David!

i've figured i've been having regrowth the whole time because my hair hasn't lost the thickness some of you have. i won't be happy till i am 100% certain that i have stopped shedding, though. ;\ (currently 10 months)
i think my hair loss is starting to show and i'm really going insane. after this hair cut i can see my scalp in the mirror in really bright lights and my part looks like gotten bigger. all my hair looks thin. are all you guys recovering? i just pray that my shedding stops!! it's been 10 long months already!

How short did you cut it, David? Buzzcut?

Still the same here even with topical solutions. I might go on Rogaine soon just to see if anything happens. Diffuse thinning everywhere but only small and medium sized hairs, and the hairs above my ears are receding up. I really wonder if these derms who keep on saying its only temporary and how most of their patients recovered are nothing but lies. For those who ordered the homeopathic drugs from Dr. Shrash are they any helpful? Thanks
Andy i'm not being harsh or anything mate, but regrowth isn't a sign that you will recover. I'm not saying that any of you guys won't recover....just that regrowth doesn't mean anything if you have alot of shedding!!
Ok...I am kind of going against dr Chu and i probably shouldn't but im really fed up with things and i have nothing to loose so i have began a topical steroid called betacap. similar to what blazed used just a different steroid... I will see if it does anything, if it does it just reinforces my theory that all my problems are related to my immune system...

I think - and this also fits into the diffuse AA theory - that shedding will go on for a while as regrowth happens. You have to regrow each hair twice before the regrowth is permanent, in my opinion. This was confirmed by the nurse who went through Accutane hair loss. First comes the baby/intermediate hair, then the normal hair comes.
Each of my hairs is all of a sudden super-thick in diameter. But all my regrowth is crappy. And I think I've started shedding again, though not that much. But I'm used to the shedding now.
And - this is my experience - after every shed, there seems to be a new wave of regrowth.
I agree andy, even after the Diffuse AA ends, there will still be shedding for a little while. The things that tell me i have Diffuse aa are 'Club' Like hairs. e.g. thicker at the tip than the buld end, and i even get these hairs from my side burns so i know it's not MPB. I also get itchy areas that when i scratch i always get hair(s) from i can actually gently pull on that area and feel a hair come from the exact centre of the itching... It's like i can feel the inflammation round the individual hairs...
Wierd thing is, i still don't loose fully miniturized hairs, and i even have regrowth of fully thickened terminal hairs even on my worst affected areas. My individual hair strands have always been amazingly thick though so....
i am still shedding and im 8 months post accutane.my part looks like its widening and i can see my scalp. im nervous because im seeing everyone for the first time since we all left for college in a couple days and im nervous that they will notice i am happy to report though that my hairloss seems to be getting better. for months ive been eating flaxseed with different foods to get my omega 3's everyday but i still noticed that when a hair fell out that there was a big white bulb on the end. i started taking flaxseed oil a couple days ago and the results were pretty dramatic, i started losing much less hair and there is no longer a white bulb at the end of the hair when i lose one. i thought that the regular flaxseed would have worked but i guess it wasnt, i wish i had switched to the oil earlier.

Firstly i'd just like to say i'm sure they won't notice... Secondly i don't think changing the form of flaxseed would have a dramatic effect in such a short time... You are probably just recovering naturally, 8 months can be a bit of a turning point for some people...
Hey guys,
I've been reading some posts about Accutane induced hair loss. I've been on low dose Accutane for 8 months now, mostly 20mg and the last two months 30mg. Two months ago, I noticed my hair flatter and thinner looking. Though I've washed my hair less on Tane (doesn't need it) I was noticing in this timeframe more strands coming out - like 30-40 when I wash and then comb my hair. It wasn't that much pre-Tane. My scalp itched a lot too. I told my Derm. and she said unless I was loosing gobs or larger amounts (like 100) I shouldn't be too concerned since I'd be finshing treatment soon anyway. I asked about Nioxin and supplements, and she sure, I could try either or both. So at that time (two months ago) I ordered Kerastase Nutritive supplements which are to aid in hair growth, fullness, and less loss. The vitamins are pricey (bought mine retail for 60 USD for one month supply) but they do work, atleast they have for me. After taking one months worth, I'm losing less strands of hair and my scalp isn't as dry and itchy. I'm still on Tane 30mg day and end in two weeks. I'm losing about 15-20 when I wash and comb - much less. My scalp itches less. I know these are pricey, and ordered another box via internet (save 10-20 bucks) but I'm going to continue to take them. I also take vitamin E, biotin, and vitamin C supplements too.
Wanted to share this.
Yvette
Andy-do you think the Rogaine has helped you at all? I literally cannot take this hair shedding anymore. I still lose about 300-600 hairs a day and have about 50% of my hair left. I am beginning to wonder if I should start Rogaine.
I'm not sure the Rogaine has helped, but it can't hurt. It has a theoretical benefit. And if you think you're going to start using it eventually, might as well start now.
Rogaine might cause you to shed a little more, by the way. But that shedding is immediately replaced by new hair.
Hi -
I tried Kerastase's Density shampoo (similar to Rogaine) and although it made my hair feel fuller the vitamins have made the difference so far. I kid you not after taking for a full month, I'm shedding less hair than I was two months ago. My hair isn't as flat and limp. I'm still on Accutane too. The vitamins are by Kerastase and called Nutritive defense. They are pricey at 50USD on internet sites, and cheaper if you can find on Ebay, as they areabout 60USD in stores... They have taurine, calcium, green tea in them. I also take other vitamins too, including Biotin and Vitamin E for hair/skin.
Good luck.

Yvette,
I see in your other posts that you said you had mouth sores due to Accutane. Have you read the previous posts on this thread about mouth sores and hair loss?
Can say without a doubt that after a week, that my topical steroid is helping me shed less and has relieved me of the burning/itching sensation.... I won't put any numbers down just yet, but i would say it has decreased by as much as 30% already...
Now, i know this won't solve my problem but i do know that it tells me 100% that my immune system is involved and i do indeed have diffuse alopecia areata, or something very similar...
I can actually run my hands through my hair and NOT get tonnes of hair at the same time, don't get me wrong i am still shedding and i get the odd itch, but it feels amazing compared to 2 weeks ago.
I also get mouth ulcers and believe it is often a sign that your immune system has been altered in some way, my mouth ulcers have TOUCH WOOD, become better over the past month or so becoming less frequent/severe...
As i said, i dunno if this topical steroid will be the answer for me, but i do believe a systemic one will have a chance of knocking all of this on the head. My grandad and father (both have vast medical backgrounds)have both said this even just a few months into all of these side effects becomign apparent...
Heres the problem guys, even though i am visiting themost careing and up to date derm, they don't always get things right...Or not even that, everyone has bad days and im sure when a dr/derm is having a bad day they wan't to just get you in and out as quickly as possible...I am very fortunate in that i have access to alot of medical resources and a very experienced Dr just a phone call away...
I have visited a number of supposedly 'good' derms on this journy of mine and let me tell you it is not fun when i am told i need some sort of counseling or being told i am seeing things. No one coul dbelieve me that i am forming scars from NO WHERE or that i am loosing vast amounts of hair that began overnight, Dr Chu was very helpfull in that he actually acknowledged the fact that he could see these things.

I have also just read your posts on mouth ulcers and the sore throat thing, please consider lowering your dose further. The whole dry mouth/sore throat and mouth ulers thing can often be found with other sid eeffects such as persistant hairloss. I am not trying to scare you just please consider lowering your dose....
