The answers I got from my doctor about hair loss

Hey all,

Just wanted to ask a question to some of those here who might have an answer- My hair is still shedding, yes all over, but of course my temples are quite thin now. I am wondering if it is POSSIBLE or if there is a decent chance that they could grow back in due time. Is it a problem if I don't see little hairs growing right away, or is it perfectly normal to see hairs start growing out again months after?

My derm said not to expect much regrowth starting until about 4-5 months after I am done with Accutane, so that should be in late April or May perhaps. I got Nizoral shampoo and I use it a couple times a week and my scalp isn't nearly as itchy anymore.

I'm not really seeing much improvement in the hair loss department though, so that is why I came asking yet again about the possibilities. I can't imagine some or most won't grow back in due time, and I reckon once it does the thickness will really make my hair feel more normal again. Until next time, see ya and thanks to anyone who helps!

what does that do max? also csmike, yea im pretty sure minx comes in brand names, like rogain etc..

Ok I took a 2nd look at my bottle it's APO-GAIN brand. I believe that's prescription grade.

@volcom

My dermatologist told me it'll take 6 months to a year for me to see hair to start growing back. It's already been 5 months for me and I haven't seen any regrowth yet, and I'm already about 6 weeks into the minox treatment.

You really shouldn't start worrying about the hair loss until after about month 6. As for me, I don't think the Nizoral really helped with the hair growing, it just helped me control the dandruff that I get after using minox.

By the way, let me say again, if you use Toppik hair concealer, it really works great. I don't worry too much about my hair loss for now while I'm using it, and it's really helped boost my confidence.

I'm 3 weeks in and I'm already noticing thinner hair. It's a pretty even thinning throughout my scalp though. I'm going to try some mouse in wet hair. I remember that making my hair thicker many years ago :)

Thanks for the answer mate. See, I'm only 20 so I'm not sure about those Toppik concealers, but what is it exactly? Can you explain it to me? I watched a couple vids on youtube and it has be totally stumped lol.

Toppik consists of fake hair fibers that attach to your hair to make them appear thicker and to cover your scalp. You apply them by shaking a bottle onto your head, like a salt/pepper shaker on food.

It's really great because it takes only 30 seconds, and it really works. It's only about $30 for a small bottle, should last you 2 months if you don't go overboard. This stuff stays on for quite a while, so I find that I only need to re apply it every 2-3 days.

I'm shedding again heavily and I don't know what to do, its diffused but the top region is thinnest. I took accutane in february of 06 till august 06 and for one month in feburary 07. haven't touched it since. my hair grew 70% of it back in summer of 08, and started shedding again in spring of 09. I have pimples on my scalp and pretty bad dandruff even using minoxidil, it helps but all comes back within 2 days. I have no idea what to do. I'm going to buy saw palmetto and buy minox to see what's up. and maybe sechudle an appointment with a derm. for a biopsy. What you guys think i should tell him. also what route can i go. im pretty desprate im saving up money so maybe in 2 years time i can get a hair restoration surgery. should cost anywhere from 5000-10000.

Does anyone in your family have MPB?

I would probably advise against the surgery because it's just simply transferring hair from one area to the other. In other words, if you have thick hair at the back, and thin at the top, after the surgery, you'll have no hair at the back, even though you have hair at the top.

I meant even using nizoral not minox, ihavent tried minox yet. I have an uncle who is bald but my dad has full head of hair and he is 52 years old. That's why i want to know for sure if its mpb or anything else. so I can remedy the situation in due time. Are there certain foods we should avoid? also what do you guys think about the pimples on my scalp what is that an indicator of? It's weird because i use nizol ever 3 days for about a month an a half now

Mikey, in spite of the fact that you are still losing hair, but do you still experience scalp itching after all this years, inquisitively?

Yes, I do, i believe I have seborrheic dermatitis, because i get dead patches of skin build up in my scalp and when i scratch i try to take them off they feel like bumps and they come off but since using nizoral it has stopped but the itching is still present not as much, I do get a tingly sensation from time to time.

I BEG YOU READ ON!

i'm about 13 months post-tane, and my hair is still shedding! by now, the strands have become so fine that they're almost invisible. is this vellus hair? my hair used to be thick and coarse; now it's thin and very fine (like baby hairs).

i find about 30-40 strands on my hands after shampooing and conditioning. but, here's the weird thing: there's NEVER a white bulb on the end of the hair. just short little weak hairs with no bulb. i think when it first started they had bulbs on 'em, but now they certainly don't!

is this a bad sign?!? i haven't noticed ANY improvement in my hair in over a year! will nizoral help this? i really just want to know what it means if there's no bulb on the end of the hair.

thank you for your attention to my crisis!

and, to top it all off, my acne came back. but my hair hasn't. go figure. this sucks.

PLEASE HELP!

thanks again.

Well if they don't have bulbs, that could mean your hair is breaking mid-shaft, so that could mean your hair is not being cleaned or maintained properly.

And no Nizoral, from my experience, doesn't really help with hair growth, it just helps prevent dandruff for me when I was using minox.

Mikey do not take flaxseed or fish oil. The omega 3 (for some unknown reason) makes accutane side effects worse (that is when you have had these side effects for some time post accutane).

I speak to dozens of people suffering side effects from accutane and it is a known issue.

Mark/Lamarr, what are your thoughts on Omega 6's & 9's? I've recently started taking evening primrose (no Omega 3's) to see if that would help and it's definitely not causing any other bad side effects that I can see so far...

Really, I thought that omega 3 fish oil would help because its an anti inflammatory. Any pills besides fish oil you suggest. What i noticed since taking the fishoil pills is that my hair is more oily and my skin as well.

Primrose Oil/GLA is fine, Lamarr will have to testify how well it works regarding hair. I know it has helped me with my eyes some and my joints, however I still take other things.

Lamarr is also right do not take fish oil or omega 3's. Most fish oils contain a small amt of vit a even if it is not labeled and omega 3's are in the same family of retnoids and Vit A..I have a explanation posted somewhere on here I believe.

Lamarr do you still take that one supplement for the hair that starts with a R I can't think of how to spell it... restoryl (sp) Did it help???? Oh and yeah glad to see your back :D

Hang in there

Aren't we doing more damage than good if we avoid vitamin a? I know that accutane was basically that, but our body needs this. How bad would it be to take a multivitamin even if it contained vitamin a, 3,500UI of it. says that is only 75% of daily value amount.

thanks for that csmike. i guess it is breakage. i never used to get breakage, and there always was a bulb when i would shed. so i guess this isn't shedding--just breakage of thin, wispy hairs.

how long do you think i'll have to wait for this to improve? i'm guessing in order for the hair to grow thick and healthy, i'll have to wait a full cycle for these wispy ones to fall out first. and that could take...two to six more years?!? yikes! what if i just pull them all out? will thick hair grow back in? haha. that sounds like a bad idea, but who knows.

You probably get enough by foods, such as carrots....I had my levels of retinol vit A form checked 6-8 months after accutane and had fasted from any vit A and by all means I was far from deficent acutally almost over.

I would not do it...

Hey mikey I'm almost at 2 months now with Minox extra strength and I'm starting to see really tiny hairs forming on my bald spots. I'm hoping they'll continue to grow haha.
