From what I gather, dairy is not that uncommon as a cause of acne. There's quite a bit on these message boards about it if you look. But you'll never hear this from your dermatologist, because no one makes a profit if they simply tell you to stop consuming dairy.
I can't comment on collagen, since I didn't use it. If you mean what else people recommend for improving Accutane-affected hair, all I can say is to wait and hopefully it'll return to normal; mine is improving currently after nine months of waiting.
Ok so I went to my dermatologist yesterday and he confirms my hair loss is TE. However he said something to me I never heard anyone mention was that he recommends using Minoxidil for people with TE.
He says your hair won't fall out after you take Minoxidil because I don't have MPB (my family does not have history of baldness). He says if you take Minoxidil for MPB (male pattern baldness), your hair WILL fall out after you stop treatment, but he says if you simply have TE, the minoxodil simply just wakes up the hair follicles more quickly. He says he expects me to regrow my hair in half the time than if I had just waited for my TE to reverse itself.
Did anyone else here get the same advice from their doc?
csmike,
Do you know how he was able to determine that you had TE? like what did he do and tell you of how he came to that answer. i would like to know so I can diagnose myself. Does hair fall out if one stops taking minox if you have mpb, is it the mpb or the minox. what I mean is does your hair fall out faster after stopping minox versus if you would have just let mpb take it's course.

He asked me how long I was taking the accutane for, when did I stop taking it, when did I first start to notice shedding, whether or not my hair had the white bulbs at the end or not (critical question), and more importantly, whether or not my family had a history of male pattern baldness.
I don't remmeber what he said, but I believe it was MPB is caused by hormone DHT, which will cause the hair to fall out again after you stop minox, but TE hair loss is not caused by DHT, so the minoxidil's mechanism will not be affected.
Was just reading this article and I believe this is the category my hair loss fits into...
Telogen Effluvium and Miniaturization
Unfortunately, a telogen effluvium can be the harbinger of the onset of Male Pattern Baldness or the initial event in a period of accelerated MPB. In these cases, which are fairly common, the hair also grows back, but the hair may be significantly finer and smaller, because the hair follicles affected have miniaturized by the MPB process. While 5% topical minoxidil is not proven to promote recovery of hair in telogen effluvium, this medication has a theoretical benefit because minoxidil acts directly on hair follicles and promotes anagen growth. Patients who are eager to play an active role in their treatment may wish to use a 5% minoxidil solution. The use of DHT inhibitors is not recommended for the treatment of telogen effluvium.
Mycure, The milk does not have anything to do with your hair loss, since you have hair loss due to tane, do not drink milk regularly it contains lots of vitamin A. You should try nizoral shampoo 2x a week and minox to see if it improves.
I'm going to buy some SAW palmetto extract and buy nizoral tomorrow and give it a shot. I had success with nizoral in the past. I have alot of dandruff its really bad and i get alot of build up on my scalp. Does anyone have this?
Csmike,
So if the hair has the white bulb what does that mean?
If it's white bulb, it's Telogen effluvium, which is a temporary hair loss. If there's no bulb, it can be MPB, which is permanent.
I personally tried saw palmetto for a couple months and I didn't notice any benefit.
Couple more questions for you all. Do any of you get patches of red inflammation around the hair line? Also, does anyone get really bad itching on their body that turns into big welts and red marks after breifly scratching?
I was getting bad inflammation scratching all the time and bumps on my head aroudn the ears and top, lots of dead skin, when i would scratch big pieces of dried skin would peel off. I don't get welts but i do get fairly red when i scratch. One advice that i seen could help alot, if you want to get rid of the excess vitamin a from the accutane in your body, work out not just body build but do a lot of cardio and aerobic excercies because you will burn fat and in your fat is where the vitamin a is stored. plus will allow for maximum circulation which is great for skin and hair.
Well guys, I've been off Accutane for one month now. My hair shedding has not stopped, but perhaps it IS a little bit better. The thing that worries me is that my hairline (specifically my temples) are the thinnest area and the hair seems to be falling from there the most.
It is still falling from everywhere else but not nearly as much. I have miniaturized haris, but they all still have the white bulb on the end. My hair is still frizzy and dry. I'm still hoping for the best. I don't really know what to do besides wait. It's pretty stressful. Best of luck to all you guys and gals!
btw mycure, I have had random spots on my body like my arms or legs that are itchy. They look like a bug bite, and are itchy and just a little bit painful. The marks last for quite a while though.

Well, my last appointment she said it should return (of course). I'm thinking if it doesn't improve in another month I will go see her again. As far as shampoo, I don't do it every day because I fear it would just make me lose more hair. I just use a dandruff shampoo by head and shoulders. I haven't tried Nizoral but it seems like a popular pick. Worth trying?
I really feel like I have no hope...I mean now that it basically looks like my temples are receding and my uncles have receded hair I have much hope at all for a decent recovery. I don't know, maybe I'm just pessimistic, but it seems like Accutane has pretty muched f***ed my hair over.

Hey, I would suggets working out, because the access vitamin a in your system is stored in your fat. also yes use nizoral, don't use head and shoulders it has been shown to actually make your hair fall out more. nizoral actually regrows hair and stops inflammation. also give take biotin.
This is a question directed to all of those who have suffered hairloss on accutane-did your hair shed at all pre-accutane?
As in during the day would you notice hair shedding, or especially after washing and during blowdrying?
To be honest, not much at all really. I could pull and pull in my hair and eventually i could get maybe a hair or two pre-accutane. Now if I want 30 hairs I could pull them out in less than a minute I reckon.
I do work out too btw, and I will start using nizoral and biotin again once I buy them

Hi CSMIKE
I used Minoxidil for 10 months, for me at least it did not wake any follicles, just my pocket book. I don't think it is an effective treatment for the condition that Accutante causes.
Nizoral helps a little to keep scalp irritation down and to prevent dermatitis, once or twice a week is sufficient to be effective.
I'm starting on Emu oil to see if it reduces the irritation and helps waken the dormant follicles. I'm not sure if it will be effective but I've tried most everything else including topical steroids, and nothing has been effective.
I will let the board know in 3 months if it has any effect.
Cheers,
Matt

Okay, so due to my obsession, I decided I would take out my camera again and take some photos from all directions of my hair. I noticed multiple fairly small patches on my scalp where it is clear that hair is not growing much.
I must have alopecia areata. Not sure how to proceed now. I can definitely see a few patches though. Suggestions from lamarr or Max?
