Accutane with Cephalexin

Hello everyone!

Today was DAY 1 for me and my accutane treatment. :surprised: Like most people who have taken it or plan to take it, I have done my fair share of research on it. I am willing to live with the most common side effects. The one thing that I am worried about is the initial breakout. I don't want my face to get any worse than it already is with acne and scars.

Is it true that you can prevent the initial breakout if you take Cephalexin with Accutane for the first part of your treatment? If anyone has tried this combination or know someone that has, please let me know the following:

1) If you had an initial breakout.

2) If you had any additional side effects to the common ones that Accutane is known for.

3) What was the dosage taken with your Accutane?

Thanks in advance and wish me luck on my Accutane treatment!

I'm not really sure. I've been on cephalexin before, but it never did anything for the cysts for which it was prescribed. Maybe it'd be helpful though.

I understand that Cephalexin is also an antibiotic used on its own for acne but the question here is, does it work well with accutane?... and prevent the initial breakout?

maybe a month and a half, i'm not exactly sure, i was taking it for about 3 months or so before accutane, and my derm told me to continue taking it for the first part of treatment.

Yeh.. when some people finish their course, resulting clear skin... they seem to forget about the bad side effect such as IB... the way they reply seem more confident... which is a good thing.

I mean i cant even remember i had 1... well the 4th course i remembered clearly.. but the 1st 3 i dont recall anything about IB.

To answer your question about Cephalexin with Accutane... i seriously dont know. never heard of it before... maybe it does help...

hmmm... so maybe the reason why it worked was because you were already on it for 3 months before. Were you originally on Cephalexin for acne or for something else? Do you remember if you had an initial outbreak with it when you started taking that?

Sorry for all the questions... I just want to get as much info before I go and ask the doc for it... and I REALLY hope it works...

Ok that makes much more sense. :surprised:

I will check with my doc tomorrow, hopefully go on Cephalexin and hopefully prevent the initial breakout!

I've been on antibiotics for a whole year at one point, for my acne. Which at that point after so many doctor visits raising questions such as " why am I forced to sleep on my side lest my pillow be woven into a scab on my neck" to which they reply " Its staph! " or " Its acne! ". They are guessing. Yes staph is present on skin naturally occurring, naturally evolving, I used to give myself nightmares about having MRSA.

Back to the main topic, I'm in late stage accutane I guess, close to a year. Went up to 80mg daily now down to 20mg and my acne is back, I'm one of the 20%. I had to leave work today because a massive boil, or cyst on the bridge of my nose started to leak, sorta into my eye. And my job you need safety glasses all times. So I went to the hospital to get it, excised, but I got prescribed cephalexin instead. So here goes nothing. Lol
