I know this is going to sound weird and it's only my second post but I've been reading the board and I don't think this has come up before.
When I went to my dermotologist a couple of weeks ago he asked me what prescription meds I was on for my acne and I told him I was taking Minocycline (Minocin). He told me he wanted me off of it because he had just come back from a conference where he saw a presentation about some woman who had been on Minocin for over 10 years. He said it had turned her skin (ears, hands) blue. I know this sounds weird but it's what he said. He told me he has prescribed Minocin for years but that he wanted me off of it. I was nervous about stopping the only thing that seemed to help, even if it was only 50% and I still got major breakouts. But I did and ended up switching to b.p. which works!!!! <happy dance!>
Has anyone ever heard of Minocycline making your skin blue? Or was he pulling my leg?
Hi,
It's not as blue as it sounds, but yes. It's very possible, but doctor's have known this for years...I don't think he would have sat you in his office and said "OMG GET OFF IT BEFORE YOU TURN BLUE".
As with other tetracyclines, mino MAY cause hyperpigmentation.
It's often reversible after discontinuing use of the drug.
Most Doctors agree that anyone on Mino for over 6 months or so should have follow ups every 2 months or so to monitor what's going on.
10 years is a long time, and when there is too much mino in the body, you can sometimes see where, because those areas turn a dark blue, purple kind of color. Keep in mind they have to list side effects/rare side effects. They can happen, but doesn't mean they will.
I'm on mino, more than 6 months. Everything is fine.

I was prescribed minocycline and I enquired as to its safety and side effects. If I remember correctly I was told that there were little to no side effects and, if I had any reactions to it, that they would only be minor.
I then read up on it on the internet for a few hours and decided that it would be best not to fulfil my prescription. The possibility of recieving blue skin/eye/gums discolouring was one of the reasons I decided not to use it. But there are others...
Heres a list I found (which still doesn't cover everything I understand):
MINOCYCLINE Side Effects May Include: Aching, inflamed joints, anal or genital sores with fungus infection, anaphylaxis (life-threatening allergic reaction), anemia, appetite loss, blurry vision, bulging of soft spots in infants' heads, decreased hearing, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, discoloration of children's teeth, fever, fluid retention, headache, hepatitis, hives, inflammation of the penis, inflammation of the intestines, inflammation of the tongue, joint pain, kidney or liver failure, nausea, rash, sensitivity to light, skin coloration, skin eruptions, skin inflammation and peeling, throat irritation, thyroid gland problems, vomiting.
