So ive been struggling with acne for the last 10 years. Ive tried everything to clear my skin but nothing has worked. I used to break out on my forehead and upper cheeks but now its just cystic acne near my jawline and lower cheeks. Its hideous. Theyre little cysts and every time they form, they scar. I have such bad scarring now (hyperpigmentation, ice pick, and box car) and still breaking out that my self esteem is at an all time low.
i was a vegetarian and ate very poorly for a long time, pretty much until this summer so i think that had to be a factor for a while but now i dont know for sure.
I tried Accutane last summer for 6 months on the lowest dose without birth control. It definitely helped and saw an improvementwith the acne. About 6 months later, i got a boyfriend and became sexually active. I got on birth control and decided to go with Ortho Tri Cyclen which wasnt too bad with the acne but made me crazy depressed. I then switched to a mini pill for 3 months which just worsened my acne and finally landed on Loryna (Yaz generic). I had my worst breakout ever during the 2nd month and it has slowly gotten better but im still breaking out. Also, this acne has now made me start scarring and it just looks awful. Im so ashamed and depressed that i hate leaving my house. I have been doing laser genesis and will try pico genesis laser on my next visit.
Currently, i just finished my 5th month of Loryna and i am looking for some input as what to do. I am on Spironolactone but i dont think it has helped much. I will admit ive been lazy with the timing i take my Birth control at. Some days its 2 hours later. I started taking Lysine, B complex vitamins, probiotics, fish oil and vitamin A all last week. I have also tried making my diet more low glycemic and drinking more water.
Should i stay on Loryna and go back on accutane? I dont really want to go on Accutane again because i cant do scar treatments for a yesr after but if i can get the acne under control, i can deal with the scars after.
Or Should I increase my Spironolactone? Should I get off Loryna all in general? Do i just need more time for the vitamins/diet to kick in? Is there something else I should be doing?
What dosage of spiro are you on? I've taken spiro on and off for the past two years, and have noticed that a higher dosage of 150 mg works really well for me as opposed to the original 50 mg I was prescribed. Also, spiro takes a while to really kick in -- at least 4-5 months. It's also really important to take it regularly, and at the right time(s) of day, while drinking TONS of water. For a while, I thought spiro was not doing anything for me until I realized that I actually needed to split up my dosage and be really consistent about it. Now I take one pill in the am, and one around noon. Since making this change, I'm starting to see some improvement.
