Hello everyone,

I have suffered from moderate acne for something like 13 years now. I've tried just about everything except accutane. I'm willing to risk the side effects because I'm so SICK OF ACNE!!!! I'm new to this org, but I've found some awesome info here for sure. For anyone who is knowledgeable in this area, I'm wondering how expensive accutane is. Also I would like to know if there is a certain type of insurance that does or does not cover the use of accutane. Can this medication be prescribed by a general physician? I don't have insurance now, but I will shortly. Has anyone out there payed full price for this med without using insurance? Any info in these areas would be helpful. Thanks so much.

Hello, this formun can be kind of slow..but someone will be along to answer your question! I think I've read if it's not covered by insurance it's a couple hundred..or close to it a month - but I could be wrong. Just wait for someone more knowledgeable than I.

Welcome to Acne.org.

The chances are your insurance probably won't cover the accutane because its so highly regulated by the government. For a generic: $350.00 a month for a 60ct of 40mg capsules.

Says who?

There are tons of people on the accutane board that have insurance, and their meds are covered.

Call the insurance that you expect to have, and ask about coverage. On my insurance, I only pay $3 per prescription for generic. If I was paying out of pocket, it would be hundreds of dollars for tane each month.

I recommend calling or going on your Insurance website. I have Blue Shield of California and they have an online database with all the drugs that they cover and which are considered generic or brand. You also wanna find out if you have a deductible that you have to pay, for me if I have a brand name drug I have a $500 deductible that needs to be satisfied first. If they don't have a website call customer service and ask to speak to someone in pharmacy services.

I think paying for generic Tane out the pocket is about $300-$420 for 1 month's supply. I don't even wanna know how much Accutane brand would cost without insurance. :snooty:

I don't understand this comment - what does government regulation of a med have to do with insurance coverage? Nothing. Insurance coverage of meds is determined simply by the plan that you're paying for and how it covers meds.

In my experience, contrary to the above statement, it is RARE for normal insurance plans not to cover accutane. Some are great and just involve a co-pay that can be as low as $10 - $25 (generally lower for generics). Some can cover just a percentage of the drug. Some involve deductibles that have to be covered before the low co-pay goes into effect.

Call your insurer and ask, just that simple. We cannot possibly answer it, but don't assume the above comment is true. It might be, but likely is not.

My co-pay is $50 per month.

Without that it would be $500. That's a lot of cash. :ninja:

I finally got to start my course Oct 7th. Bittersweet because of the price (394 a month just for pharmacy) but it's worth every penny to get my skin back to the way it was or close anyway.
