Started accutane recently and thought Id wack it all on here as I know Ive used this site a lot to get help and advice and different treatments and stuff.
bit of background on me Im 21, male and had acne since I was around 17, before that I never really suffered and never really had any spots throughout school. Then all of a sudden just hit me and havent had much luck since. Acne is mild/moderate but very persistent I dont think in the last year I havent had at least 1 spot on my face and of course now I have lots of hyperpigmentation.
i have tried everything from benzoyl peroxide, Duac, skinoren, all the oral medication, tea tree washes, proactiv.... you name it and Ive tried it. I also cut out alcahol as I was a weekly drinker with my mates and found that helped slightly but by no means cured it at all. I cut out dairy and sugar from my diet and all junk food. All this stuff helped slightly and for a certain amount of time, oh yeah and Ive also used light therapy which helped them a little bit but again came back, it was a lumie clear light I used.
it for the point where I stopped going out, I didnt like going to work, I stopped going to the gym and basically I do everything I can to not leave the house! Its got to the point where it controls my life so have decided to get it sorted.
so yeah I have finally decided to start accutane, I am on my third day down plan to try and do updates every few days/once a week.

Hi Matt, I too am on the same boat as you. I have been on doxy and mino for going on 2 years now and my acne has subsided but i still get new ones almost every day. Now I am starting to get a bluish patch on one of my acne scars on my face and it is due to long term use of me using minocycline.
just like you, this disease has slowly been taking control of my life and I dont want it to happen any longer. In a couple of days, I am going to my doctor so I can start taking accutane. Acne even affects the time i spend with my kids and im sick of it.
praying that our treatments both go extremely positive without any major/serious/long term side effects

Im on day 7 now and from day 4 Ive been breaking out with a lot of whiteheads, tiny little ones that you can only see up close. Ive had a few others spots too but nothing major I cant deal with.
Skin is DRY, reckon Im going to have a rough next couple of weeks with breaking out but nothing I didnt expect so got my fingers crossed.

Jpablo...how has your treatment been going and how long have you been on it?
Things have been going ok, still breaking out in certain areas but other areas have cleared up. This is day 30 today. 70mg daily. All the usual side effects but they are bearable. My main issue is squeezing, I've got a real problem with that and I'm gonna leave myself scarred If I don't stop.

Hey Matt, that is the major thing that I am dreading about as well. Having to go out in the world if I break out if I go on Accutane. I am on minocycline now and i know that when i try to ween myself off of it, i break out big time...so Im scared that once i get off mino and thrn go on accutane, i will experience a major breakout from getting off the antibiotics and then from the accutane.
In your case sincr your breaking out..would you be able to take prednisone? I spoke to two different derms and i told thrm my concern about breaking out and thry both said if I do break out, they would prescribe me prednisone.

Hi!
thing is I expected to break out, its one of those things where if I just get it over and done with then Ill be happy again. I know its crap but I knew it had to get worse before it could get better!
i look at it as Id rather look terrible for the next month then I would have acne for another 3/4 years.
When do you plan to go onto accutane?

This is very true. I'm just finished the month and my acne has improved. However I am having issues with some areas of my face. But in the end it will all get better. Have hope

I also think I read all this stuff online but all Ive managed to get from it is eveyone is different on it. Some people clear up in a couple months and some need 2 cycles of it so I cant really compare myself to anyone else because I doubt it going to go the same way.
im hoping the breakout I am having now is the big one and then Im going to clear up slowly when this finishes.

I was supposed to see my derm today about going on accutane, but I cancelled the appointment. Nothing else scares me more than going into work with a break out. I am using panoxyl 10% acne foaming wash and in thr two and a half weeks that I have been using it, it has lowered the active pimples on my face by more than half (knock on wood). I am going to give this the 3 months you usually would give a product to see if it works and so far it has. I used to count about 11 active pimples on my face, but now it is down to about half of that.
if panoxyl doesnt work, then i think i will take accutane, but the thought of me breaking out so bad and then having my kids/co-workers see me like that would just make me feel extremely depressed. I wish i could take off 5 months of work for i could just focus on accutane treatment but unfortunately that is not an option lol.

I can understand where you are coming from. I started a new job bang in the 2nd/3rd week of ACCUtane. In a way it sucks but in a way it's good cause everyone will just know me to have acne, whereas in my old work I had clear skin and just started to break out.
It was hard the first day being introduced around the offices to about 100 and everyone looking at me, but it's over. It also doesn't help the job is shirt and tie as I always think people look highly at appearance and that because I have acne I shouldn't be working there. But life goes on and I got the job so it doesn't mean everything

I understand both of you I work in an office two so Im going in knowing my face has blown up massively.
for me I have to just think of the end goal with other treatments Ive known the chances of it working are very slim with everything I have already tried but with Accutane I would like to think its going to work.
i was unsure for to take it but I had no other options, also my girlfriend and Mom are sick of my moaning about it so they told me to take them haha!
11 hours ago, Ludadubz said:How are yall feeling today? Any side effects thag are bothersome?
Well first time I woke up in a week without any new spots so felt pretty positive.
Everyday ive woke up with 4/5 new spots.
The one thing I have noticed is they are coming and going very quickly. I feel the spot and within 24 hours it has formed a head and when I wash my face it goes and then leaves a blemish on my skin. Other then 3 larger ones that I have had for 2/3 days I have had nothing too troublesome.
But yeah woke up with nothing new this morning.
The one thing im thinking is that with the Initial breakout from what I understand it pushes all the crap out your skin and obviously this is what is happening to me. When this stops does that mean all the crap is out and it should start to get better?
I have seen accutane logs where the person was breaking out the entire treament of 5 months and cleared up on the last month (month 6) and i seen others where they got better immediately. There is no telling whether what you are experiencing is an IB or not. But if you look on realself.com and view the answers from the doctors on there, they usually say you will see improvement on the 2nd-3rd month of treatment.
Hey fellas, how are yall doing today?
as for myself, I found that minocycline has made some patches of my skin a light blue/greyish color so I immediately stopped taking the pills this morning. I am currently quietly freaking out on the inside, but I believe I am slowly making peace with giving the go and starting accutane. I have dealt with acne for 15 years and I no longer want to deal with it so hopefully accutane will be my answer. I have enough scarring on my face and this face wash I have been using is working, but my skin is starting to bleach and I dont want to take the chance of it doing further damage. Im brown skinned and it is turning patches of my skin on my face a lighter brown. This is extremely depressing as it seemed as though benzoyl peroxide might be my answer since it has been clearing me, but being off minocycline is scaring the fuck out of me and i no longer want to experiment with another treatment...Im just going to go for accutane.
Sorry for the long msgs fellas, but I would like to support yall thru your journey of accutane and would definitely like some tips or pointers for any of the side effects that you have so far experienced. I already bought some lip balm that was recommended by folks on here (dr. Dans lip balm) and i need some eye drops (for possible dry eyes - any suggestions?), vaseline for possible nose bleeds and i already have eczema outbreaks on my arms and hands sometimes so i will need to pay extra attention to that.
I am going to do this for myself, my mental state and for my children. Im tired of letting acne control my life and am going to take that leap of faith with accutane. I am going to pray i avoid the IB and I hope i dont break out like crazy for getting off mino cold turkey, but Monday i go see my derm and i already gave her my blood test results so I should be able to start accutane by Tuesday or Wednesday of this week.
i will pray for all 3 of us to have success....i am dreading going into work with a face full of pimples...i need to prepare myself for that.

Hi!
As for me I spent the weekend with my girlfriend and she told me my face was improving from the week before. I have had 1 new spot over the weekend and it was a tiny little yellow head which can now gone. Still praying that the breakout I had was the IB and it has now been and gone because honestly I must have had 30 or so spots appear on my face. Currently have lots of marks on my face but it is feeling far smoother then it was and its only been 2 weeks so got my fingers crossed. I would say I am expecting to get another breakout because its still very early on but you never know, as you said before everyone has a completely different experience.
As for you I think its a great idea for you to start the Accutane. It is by far the most successful treatment and if nothing else it doing the job then being able to get rid of acne for good is the end goal and I know I would do anything for that so i'm pretty sure you feel the same. Even if you do have an IB you know that it is getting all the crap out your skin and in the long run its going to be for the best. I have been using a neutorgena moisturiser and blistex on my lips, using these regularly seems to have stopped anything terrible. Although my face is dry but that's just part of the treatment.
Well guys i popped my first accutane pill today. My doc is starting me on a loe dose (20mg a day) treatment for 4 weeks and then she may raise it up from there.
i was not about to take it, but i said fuck it and took the leap in after i spoke to my Father. I immediately had to use the bathroom and had a diarrea affect (sorry if thats too much info lol) my stomach does still feel upset a bit, but it mah have been because I took the pill about an hour after eating...not sure.

Wouldnt off had an effect that quickly. Nerves I'd say

Well whatever happens from here is going to be progress so try and keep positive.
I doubt it was the pill aha! maybe it was something you ate!
I have had 3 spots now 5 days and they have all been very small. My face is no where near as agitated as it was nd the marks are slowly becoming less visible. The Accutane had a very quick effect on me as my first breakout happened days 3-10 not to say I wont have another one but it was certainly the Accutane which caused this breakout.
I did a little experiment and had some chocolate (I say some it was quite a lot) over the weekend and I gave up sugar before because it made me break out. I was interested to see what effect it would have on the Accutane. I have noticed nothing so far but its only been 3 days since I ate it, I usually notice spots after a couple of says so will be interesting to see how it goes. day 15 today only 105 more to go haha!!

Its funny you say that because I also break out when I eat alot of sugar or any type of rice (brown or white). Sugar scares me so damn much that i will look at the box of anything i buy in the grocery store and if it has more than 1gram of sugar in it, I will NOT buy it. I seriously think i have a problem, but now that I am on accutane, I will continue to eat/function that way and will not experiment until about month 5 of the course. I actually have an appointment with an allergist to see if I have any intolerances to any type of foods.
my primary care doctor asked me if i had any family history of diabetes and I told him my mom, dad, and even my older bro are all diabetic. He told me that there is a connection between being diabetic and acne...its like acne is telling me to cool the fuck down on sugars because it will bring me closer to that route of being a diabetic like the rest of my immediate family (not sure how true that is though...never researched it after he told me).
Matt - I also hope your break out has already passed. Having to experience it for only a week is a godsend compared to the longevity of what others have experienced for their breakouts.
What dosage are yall on again? I think if I dont experience a breakout on being on 20mg a day, I will ask my doc to keep me on this dosage even if it means me staying on it longer. I read medical studies about patients still being successful on a low dose isotretinoin treatment and they experienced less severe side effects compared to others on a higher dose. Also, I may even ask to keep me on a maintenance dose of 10mg or 20mh a week once my treatment is over IF I start to notice acne coming back.
Also, a question for theboth of you...have you experienced any hair loss or any signs of erectile dysfunction? (Sorry for asking a personal question, but I have seen posts of individuals who dealt with erectile dysfunction because of accutane)
