Hi guys!

I've been on accutane for about a week now. I weigh 47 kg and I was prescribed accutane 20mg/day.
I've had acne since I was 14 and I'm 18 now. I've exhausted most of the antibiotics available and my dermatologist prescribed accutane to help clear my sudden bout of acne. The state of my skin has really upset and frustrated me so I'm hoping this will work! *fingers crossed* I'll be updating my progress as and when I can. Here is what I experienced the past week, hope it helps!

Week 1

For side effects: I didn't experience dryness in my face altho my lips did become very dry. I think it had something to do with the fact that my skin was extremely oily to begin with. My skin became very sensitive tho and I had to apply creams to help soothe it and reduce the redness. Soothing creams are especially useful and they feel great especially because my skin is starting to dry out a little and it flakes when I apply the benzoyl peroxide cream. Washing my face after the BP cream makes my existing acne really raw and red. I would really recommend soothing creams.

I was prescribed accutane together with erythromycin (antibiotic) and I usually take vitamin E/primrose oil supplements 1 capsule a day at night to help regulate my hormones as well as help the healing process. I've been told by my dermatologist to avoid high GI (basically sweet food) and I've been cutting down, haven't totally eliminated it from my diet though.

As for my progress: I'm currently having initial breakout now, lots of fresh pimples and red bumps which HURT to the touch but the acne I had before I began the pills are starting to heal (I think) they dont hurt very much any more altho they're still red and angry.

That's all for now, will update soon! Praying for clear skin soon!!!

Hi Jaures, thanks for your reply! I read that you've started your accutane course recently! Wishing you luck and a fast recovery! :)

UPDATE

so today is day 11 of accutane

My progress: Not much difference

My face is still red and bumpy and very raw.

I'm getting very depressed with the state of my face, idk if it will be improving any time soon. *sigh*

As for side effects, my lips are becoming increasingly dry along with my hands.

For now, accutane doesn't seem to be working but I will give it some time. Important event 2 weeks from now, I'm hoping skin will recover by then. I'm on the road to recovery!

Hi yall!

Day 14 (13 to be exact)

Sooo...the past week has been the Chinese New Year hols for me and I got the chance to stay at home and enjoy the nice long holiday. Before I begin with the update on my face, here's a happy chinese lunar new year to everyone!!

Update:

The breakout is starting to subside, I haven't been getting any new pimples or acne recently although my nose has become covered in blackheads (it looks like a strawberry). The redness on my face from the cystic acne is starting to recede and is now concentrated in small spots all over my face. Most of the cystic acne has come to a head and starting to dry although my skin still looks angry and raw around my cheeks where the acne is concentrated.

Side effects: My scalp has begun to itch and flake and I'm convinced that it's a side effect of the accutane since I've never had itchy scalp before. I have been washing my hair everyday since I'm used to it but I will cut down to once every few days and see if it helps. I've been getting throbbing headaches really frequently recently, mostly at the back of my head. I've also become really thirsty easily and I have to drink cups of water every few hours. But other than that, my face is fine, it hasn't dried out too badly.

that's all from me for now!

The accutane seems to push out blackheads for most people, after some time that the blackheads should be gone, I got the same thing. Hang in here

Hi Jaures,

thank you so much for your support. the healing process for accutane is long and torturous...

Just to check, how's your skin doing so far? I read your log and it seems like you've made huge progress in such a short time.

Day 18

Today is day 18. I've more or less given up on any recovery. Even though my acne has subsided I'm left with so much scarring, I don't even know which is worse anymore. I've resigned myself to the fact that there is no fast solution and no immediate recovery. No pills are going to help and all I can do is wait and wait and wait for the scars to go away. I'm so tired of fighting this stupid flawed skin. i have scarring all over and I'm certain these scars won't go away anytime soon.

*sigh* i dont know if accutane was the right decision I'm really having doubts now.

Hi fl0rallz

i am also on 20 mg/day and weigh around 50 kg, so very similar to you!

Sorry to hear about your scarring - I have a lot of hyper pigmentation too, but my derm told me that laser treatment after finishing Accutane can make a really big difference on scarring. Maybe you should look into that too?

Hi GreatDane!

Thanks for your reply. I've tried chemical peels before prior to my present breakout. I spent 2 years and lots of money removing my previous acne scars only to have another breakout...From what Ive read around here, I have to wait a few months after accutane before considering any skin procedures.

How is your progress on accutane?

Hi, sorry I was away for some time

I'll update my log just after, but same as you really, I have tons on red marks left from acne which I think does not really improve, but it's better because I have almost no active acne so the marks should hopefully heal.

Man it's just day 18, most people don't see result in that time, and most even have worse skin at day 18 because of IB so hang in there at least few months.

You say your acne subsided and you are left with scarring. The first step in healing scarring is treating the underlying acne. The scarring can stay forever is there is still acne. Also acne + scarring is much worse than just scarring. I understand what you feel but we tend to look at our skin from very close, if you do the same with random people on the street you will find that most people have flaws.

What you call scars, are red marks left from acne ? Or shallow pits from picking acne ?

Post pictures maybe I'll be able to help you because I have the same issues (I have a lot of scars and red marks).

Also try Zinc if you have those white marks under nails. It cost almost nothing.

Hi Jaures,

sorry for the late reply, I haven't seen much improvement lately so not much to update. Actually you raised a really good point about the scarring,

To be honest, I'm not sure if they are really scars or underlying acne. I will post a picture soon!
