Day 30

Went to my second month check up today and got some discouraging news. My blood work and everything was fine, but I talked to her about the crazy costs and she tried to get me assistance, but there was no luck. She was shocked it costs me $430 a month, but she's out of ideas. Right now she is appealing to my insurance company and is going to tell me what happens Thursday, but until then at least I don't have any medicine left and it looks like my cost won't be going down. So things are ok on the face front, bad on the monetary one. neutral.gif

Day 31

Well I got my second month today! I've been increased from 20 mg twice a day to 30 mg twice a day. It makes me a little nervous because I've read the bump in dosage makes side effects worse--any experience with this??

Additionally, the increase in dose meant a price increase. This month cost me $640. I literally cried at the pharmacy when I found out. I wasn't going to buy it, but it was my last day to do so without waitin the 19 days and I'm desperate. Does ANYONE know ANY WAY I can get this cheaper. It's really upsetting.

No help here for getting it cheaper, as I don't live in the US.. I hope there's a solution though!

As for the side effects getting worse with increased dosage, it happened to me. I had my dry skin/chapped lips under control until I was on 60mg.. My skin was peeling and flaking like crazy.. my makeup wouldn't stay on. My lips would bleed because of the dryness - thew corners of my mouth where scabbed over from being so dry. The other side effect that got worse was my skin bruising a lot easier, but that wasn't a worry.

Just expect an increase in dryness - that's going to be your main one. So moisturize as much as you can!

I'm so sorry about the cost, Kelsey. That is terrible. I'm also not American, so I don't have any suggestions, but I hope you find something.

Day 35

Thanks guys, I'm doing what I can now to try and get assistance, but it is very discouraging. For the moment, though, my side effects aren't too bad. Super dry, lots of nosebleeds, but that's about it. Some joint pain, which is new. The snow and cold weather isn't helping things either! I'll let you all know how my money situation progresses. neutral.gif

Day 38

So I got two (maybe) hopeful pieces of news!! I called the Promius Pharma company that was mentioned on the first page that has a discount program and they took my information and said they would get in touch with my dermatologist and insurance company so please keep your fingers crossed that something works out there! I also contacted my state's Rx assistance program who says that they may be able to help me, so they should be in touch soon. I hope that good things are happening for me!

Ugh I'm in America too Kelsey and my first prescription was $610 and it broke my heart, I cried at the pharmacy as well. My insurance kicked in yesterday and of course no one can tell me what I will owe when I get my second prescription because as they have all told me "well, it just depends." Depends on what!? I don't want to spend another 600 bucks thank you very much! We will see if it helps.... but I'm banking on....no. Anyways keep us posted on what you find out as far as the Promius Pharma information and I may be following in your footsteps, and If I find anything out to help lower the cost I will let you know! Best of Luck, your treatment is moving right along :)

Ugh, you are in the same boat!! Well, I found out last night I am not eligible for the Promius program because I DO have insurance, even though it doesn't cover it saywhat.gif So glad they're helpful, right!? It's so heartbreaking to have this cure so close at hand and have it cost so much, and you and I are on the same dosage right now as well. I hope that your insurance covers it all--I'm going to be contacting mine again soon as well!!

Photo update! What day is it now, 41?? Ugh. To me, I look like I did on day 1 except drier and with more nosebleeds and the inability to wear contacts, THE most annoying side effect. -__- Lets hope this is the last month with this much activity!!

Alright...this is embarrassing. This is one of my weirdest side effects. My nose is super dry and bleeds all the time, and I've started getting these..I don't know..SCABS on the inside of my nose. Like super sharp scabs in there! So at first I tried to get them off, and it HURTS! They are attached to my nose! Does anyone else have this!? It is so weird and I know it just looks like I'm picking my nose! Ugh.

Also, I've lost count of what day I'm on!! I'm on my second month, tomorrow is my last day of box 2. 6 boxes a month, so...tomorrow is 49?? Someone mathy help me out!!

Other than that, the subzero temperatures aren't helping. My lips are hell, and my left hand--only left one, of course--feels rough, like duck skin, all bumpy on top. The skin between my fingers is peeling off in strips as well, which adds to my appeal right now.

Stay well!

hi.

so ive been on 20mg twice a day for 2 montsh and now on 3rd month. first time user. brand accutane - absorbica. i guess i have good insurance (though they are a pain in teh ass and i wanted to do 50mg a month but that would require getting 2 rxs and all this crap that my derm said the insurance would prob not cover etc.) so i stuck to the 20mg 2x since i had elevated triglicerydes.

anyhow.. for your bleeding nose - my doc told me if i get a dry nose which i do, to get teh over the counter nasal sprays - NON MEDICATED. pumping these in a few times a day helps - but ask your derm before you go out and buy it. i use the store brand which is liek 6-7 bucks for a bottle - wallgreens has a nice one. if you look at the ingredients it also has benzalkonium chloride which is a disinfectent but it wotn burn or anything. i also use a nasal aloe gel (also saline) which i apply with a q-tip once a day. these help. ive got a deviated septum so that particular area gets dry for me. just check with your doc before trying any of these just so you dont agrevate or infect any of that bleeding.

ALSO, ask your doc about vit E and if they suggest that helps with the dryness (REMEMEBR to ask teh dosage too and frequency if they say yes). for my triglycerides my doc even recommended taking fish oil which she heards helps to lower the triglycerdie count but i was only slightly elevated like 10 points about teh normal range.

good luck! ask about absorbica from your pharm company too. theres a coupon my doc gives me for it too that it ends up costing me 10 bucks BUT that might not be possible with all insurances. just some words of encouragement - after this you will have less acne, if any at all! and wont need to keep buying acne cleaning products or lots of makeup which can cost a lot of money/headache! and if accutane doesnt work. well theres nothing we can do about that. just gotta keep living, and not let it get the best of us; theres other things to try too then.

Not sure if you all have seen the news about the chemical spill in West Virginia, but it's about two miles from my house! Needless to say, the no water rule has made me so. SO DRY. It is miserable. I didn't think my lips could be drier, but I was wrong! I've been drinking bottled water but only sparingly since I don't want to run out. My skin is suffering! Other than that, my side effects are the same. Wish me luck that the water gets turned back on soon!

Oh man Kelsey! I am so sorry to hear about the chemical spill, dang it! You my friend have overcome some serious hurdles with this medication, just continue doing what you do and you will make it through the other side. That has to be super frustrating though, I kind of can't even imagine :( Hang in there and keep us posted, I hope everything clears up soon there in West Virginia, and you get your water supply back pronto!

Day 60

Well, I went to my derm today to start month 3! Woohoo! She told me some bad news--my cholesterol has gone up 100 points this last month from my higher dose neutral.gif She's keeping me on 60 for now instead of increasing which is a bummer because I want to see results, but I also don't, you know, wanna die! All the pharmacies around me were OUTTTT of the drug (WTF) so I have to wait until Monday to get my next month's supply. One day at a time! I am happy with results so far, my mom can tell a difference and now most of my face is more red and scars and bumps than actives which makes me happy!

Seriously?!? How?

Last month in my post-$700 rage, I ended my secondary insurance coverage and signed up for Medicaid. That's all I can think of that I did differently!
