Hi, I am 29F and have had acne since teen.

I tried multitute of treatments, retinoids, peels, blue light, laser, none took it away for ever.

Finally I am put on accutane.

20mg for 30 days.

40mg for 30 days

80mg for 120 days (4 months).

This will be more than my total dosage , I am 56Kg.

I am in my 5th month and I am still breaking out.

Infact it looked so bad that I cant go to work. My derm put me on prednisone for 2 weeks 20mg for 7 days and 10mg for 7 days.

I am on day 5 of prednisone and amazingly all acne subsided and face is clear.

I know this is short term and scared to come off it.

Any advices guys?

Is my acne going to go off after the course?

Should I wean off prednisone from now?

I am very very low atm!

It seems that we are all in the same boat. I am about to start my final month of accutane in less than 2 weeks and i am still breaking out in inflamed, under the skin bumps, small red bumps and bumps with pus. Quite discouraging. My derm will not entertain an extension of my course or an increase in dosage

I weigh 150 and have been on a consistent dose of 60mg per day

Isnt it the worst feeling. I am hating it . Prednisone brought down the inflammation entirely, but I will be off it starting today. I am seeing my derm again tomorrow morning. I am really terrified of coming off prednisone though.

He is a quite a believer of accutane, so he thinks I could go on extending the dose if I still break out after this month. But I have completed my dosage already.

I was hoping to have clear skin by now. I didnt have cystic acne to begin with, just moderate. But now my face looks worser than when I started.

Prednisone in the long run is bad for your body and acne so its a good thing you're done with it. I am sorry that you are going through this - life seems so frickin unfair sometimes. At least your derm is open to extending your course. Your dose seems a bit high so it might be a good bet to stop your treatment for at least 8 weeks, try topicals, maybe a retionoid and then possibly restart your accutane course then.

Also, because you are female like me, have you looked into the possibilty that your acne is hormonal? Maybe spiro or bc might work for you?

Keep us posted on your progress. I hope this works for both of us.

I definitely think my acne is hormonal, because before I started accutane I mainly broke out only during that time of the month.

I will check with my derm on other ways, thanks for the tip. I cant be like this. It is affecting my personal and professional life really badly.

The last time I was on tane my face broke out the entire time. It was absolutely terrible! However, tab out three weeks after I stopped, my face totally cleared and healed at an alarming rate without scaring. After 1.5 months of being off tane my face was damn near blemish free. Unfortunately the effects wore off and here I am five years later. I have 1.5 months to go and this time my course is the complete opposite, my face has been clear for months now. Hang in there, it WILL get better!

Hoping that is the case for me - it sucks. During my previous courses i was clear within 1-2 months and stayed clear for app 2 yrs each time.

Five years of clear skin isn't a bad bet.

What was your previous dosage like and for how long were you on it. Also, what was your weight? Did your derm ever tell you why u didn't clear up while on accutane.

Also I saw my derm yesterday. He took me off prednisone and mentioned that he feels my breakout phase is over and I should get better.

But the scared me wasnt ready to leave his office until he prescribed me another 2 weeks of 5mg prednisone.

Even though I hold the prescription, I am not taking it anymore. I really hope his words are true and I dont break out anymore.

I am on a strict no dairy, no sugar, low carb, green veggie diet

My previous dosage was 80mg/day and I was on it for around 5.5 months. My weight was around 185lbs then. I remember quiting early because I didn't think it worked for me because I broke out the entire time. I am almost positive the accutane was causing my acne. It did though because I was acne free for awhile. However, over the course of the last five years I did have breakouts. It really sucked but it would eventually clear up. Then it started to get worse and worse. I had a bad breakout a few years ago and that's when I started antibiotics which worked great for a long time. I will never take antibiotics again though for acne because in the end it just comes back even worse, not to mention it messed with my stomach pretty good. So here I am nearing the end of my treatment on the highest dose I have ever taken. I am just praying that this time it will keep my acne in check...I'm so sick of living with these terrible breakouts. I'm pretty sure I'll at least have a nice long break from it if it dies though. I'll take that if that's all I can get. #shitgenetics

One of the side effects of Accutane is Acne. Could that be why, some of us have acne during the course of treatment and it goes away as we stop it. I dont know if t makes sense, but I am trying to tell to myself, that it will go away after this month.
