Well I think it is good for you to be on the medication. You have persistent acne and if it scars there is enough there in my opinion to get out on accutane. It doesn't need to be horrible to be on the medication it's better in my opinion to catch it before its horrible and scarring and all that. My complexion isn't terrible either, I mean the other logs on here that I have come across they would laugh at the issues I have with my face, some people out there have no clear spot on their skin at all... It's bad enough though in my opinion and my derms opinion to have me on accutane. All that matters!
That's true. My acne just hadn't been responding to anything after the Retin-A Micro suddenly stopped working. The scarring is really the worst thing though. I hate dealing with red marks! I just always thought Accutane was for people with severe acne, so I never expected to need something like this. I'm happy to be taking it though because I do feel like it was the best option for me.
Yeah, some people have it so much worse than we do. I honestly don't know how they handle it. I don't think I could do it.
Rachel girl your skin looks the a dream compared to what I'm calling my face these days. Your lips look like they are in good condition so far! Nice and pink, mine are bright red most the time and no color at other times. I miss my lips. I seriously should get my hand on so cure gel. I needs it!!!
I know... I almost feel weird because I know my skin is FAR from what everyone else on this forum is dealing with. It makes me wonder how I ended up on Accutane in the first place. I do have times when my skin is a mess though, but it's still never been as bad as what everyone else here, unfortunately, goes through. Although, reading logs like yours and Katie's kind of freaks me out because it makes me scared for what might be coming!
My lips definitely get dry to the point where it's uncomfortable if I don't have lip balm on. However, I don't think it's anything like the dryness everyone else experiences since I read about cracked, bleeding lips. Yikes! Or maybe it's just from the Cure gel and my constant application of some sort of product on my lips.
Definitely get the Cure gel though! If you have any flaky spots on your skin or lips it will really help!

I feel the same as both of you. I'm sure if I posted pics most people would think I should stop whining so I'm grateful it's not worse but I agree with you Betsy that it's not just about severity but also about persistent acne and mine seems to be continual too - never a break where my whole face is clear. And the same damn pores clog over and over which doesn't help with the scarring for sure! My derm told me my acne was cystic that was recalcitrant - meaning very, very stubborn. I am really hoping this Accutane kicks it for good!!
I'm gonna have to get some of that Cure stuff too - it just sound too good to pass up! 🙂
like 95% of the logs I have read say the redness goes away after the first month or so. Some people say it sticks around and years later they are still battling the redness. Who knows if it is from the accutane or if it is a mild case of rosacea and they are unaware they have it. I can't say that I have had my face react to foods I am eating at all. I eat a lot of spicy food yummy and I rarely drink coffee, but I have never noticed the flushed face or redness from the coffee! Very interesting! Im curious for you to try icing some and seeing the results. I have used retin a for like 3 years and diffirin when I was a pre teen for a couple of months. I was red with all of them and it went away when I was finished so hopefully that is the case with the accutane!
I do get very red on my next and chest after showering though since starting the meds... So I must be sensitive from the hot temps. Funny though its only from the shower if I take a hot bath or go into a hot tub I don't get red, so maybe my skin find the beating water irritating who knows. Lets just say I couldn't hop out of the shower and then go out right away, my chest looks terrible after showering!!
I've read the same things in logs. It seems to me that Gina's redness comes and goes depending on what she eats, so I don't think it's anything to worry about. At least it's not constant redness!
It's interesting how the beating water must effect your skin, since it's only then that you experience redness. Your skin must be pretty sensitive right now! I've always had redness from showering. It's so weird because I'll get random splotches all over my body. They always go away quickly though, so I don't worry about it.
Yeah, and the redness also comes when I've been out in the heat or sun for a long time, but that's only been from Accutane. I will say that overall, my face has a slightly more pink tint. This seems to be common and part of the 'Tane burn, so I'm not worried. To be honest, I am really looking forward to hopefully never having to use topicals again. I think they cause a lot of the weird flushing and skin redness.
I'm with you there! I couldn't handle having anything worse than what I have now. My face is at its worst that its ever been. Which is why I'm doing the accutane route, my derm was all for it too. She wanted me to start taking it years ago and my complexion wasn't even that bad. Is once I started the retin a to be honest, I broke up so much from that and it just kept coming and coming and not going away, so finally I have in and said yes to the accutane. People can call it vain to be on it but who the hell wants scarring all over their faces? Not me and not you. Of course we are going to do what we can to get rid of it!
Off to my dentist appointment! Let's hope my lips don't decide to crack open!
Good luck at the dentist! I had a bad experience with my dentist, and left with a cracked mouth. That was so bad. The last time I went I asked my dentist for Vaseline before he worked on my mouth, and it actually helped a lot! No cracking or any pain!

Vain my ass, right?! Those are people who have never dealt with it to the level we're all dealing with it. I would have to say it's just as much not wanting to endure painful bumps that ooze or bleed as it is wanting to look good. And I have to say I am loving not having to put all those topicals on my face everyday - it was ridiculous. I hope after this all I ever have to worry about doing is moisturizing! 🙂

You're lookin' like a rockstar, Rachel!!!!! So good! Do you think the chin pimple is part of a mini IB?
You're reminding me I need to post photos soon. 😛
I think acne is the devil and that we shouldn't have to use these chemical topicals, so I understand why someone with persistent (albeit mild) acne would want to take accutane. None of those stupid topicals every fully work, and they seem to damage our nice skin. For example, I think your skin overall looks really healthy and hydrated from within even if there are some spots, you're starting to get that Tane Glow! I'm glad we don't have to use topicals right now. Sometimes when I get pissed about specific pimples, I just try to focus on making the rest of my skin look hydrated and nice as possible. I think it helps with healing.

Gina how do you do that, turn everything so happy and positive?? You are so good at the whole "glass is half full" mantra!
I have actually been trying hard to do that too, not focus on the chin explosion but the smooth cheeks I have. It's so hard sometimes when your eyes go right to the bad stuff because we've conditioned ourselves to do that.
And I agree, acne is the devil!
I seriously just went to brush my teeth and you all have been busy posting away!
I feel the same as both of you. I guess the important thing is to not worry about what other people think. We're taking this medication to help ourselves, not anyone else. I'm certainly grateful my skin is nothing compared to what some people deal with, but that doesn't mean I'm happy with the way my skin can be!
My skin seems to be the same as yours. It's pretty rare that my face is 100% clear. My acne might be mild/moderate, but it's still persistent. And annoying!

Ah, the lovely 'tane burn! Lol. I haven't experienced that yet. Although, I do agree that I would love to not have to apply any topicals to my face after this!

Definitely not vain! No one wants or needs scars and we're doing what we have to in order to prevent it!

Lmao! Thanks, Gina! I'm assuming it must be a mini IB starting. I'm getting another zit on my left cheek, but it feels like it'll be a small one. I hope, anyway!
You definitely have to post photos. I'm curious to see how your amazing clearing is going!
I did have success with Retin-A Micro, but you're right... It never worked 100%. Maybe 93%. It'll be nice to not have to use topicals anymore.
'Tane Glow?! Hahaha! Well, that sounds nice!
And I completely agree that it's good to focus on making sure your skin is hydrated and looking its best despite the zits. We still have to take care of the skin that's clear!

I really think positivity is absolutely essential while taking this stuff. So many people go through rough patches on this drug and it can be hard to not let it get you down. And we need someone like Gina to spread that positivity!

UM, I hate when people make comments! It is so hard to not care what people think, though.
Any bad comments while you've been on it?
My boss seriously said, "I knowyou've been stressed. Your skin has been awful and just clogged lately".
UM THANKS.
And my grandma, "What is that? A bunch of zits on your face?"
And my mom, "You always want something better, so now you're taking that stupid medication. Can't you just be happy?"
Sorry, this didnt' have a whole lot to do with your posts but I hate the comments I've been getting. UGH

Aww, I'm sorry. 🙁 That must be so frustrating! Rude comments are so uncalled for! You just want clear skin. And you deserve it! I really hope Accutane is just what you need to get flawless skin!
I've been fortunate in that I don't hear any negative comments. My close family and friends know I struggle with mild/moderate persistent acne. They all know I'm taking Accutane, but no one really says anything about it. My best friend was very encouraging when I told her I was going to start taking it though. Always great to hear!
My grandma wasn't too sure about me taking this stuff and she still tells me all of the... "Oh, I saw this on TV and it's supposed to clear your skin!" Lol.
People who post negative crap need to get lives and get back on their "Does masturbation cause acne?" boards. To each their own... someone's acne might not look like a big deal to another person, but could be devastating to the person who has it.
I had some stressful stuff happen in my life earlier this year, which resulted in me dropping 15 pounds (I was originally around 127, which was thin for someone who's 5'7 anyway, and ended up being 112 at my low) and seriously half of my friends would roll their eyes and say stuff like, "Yeah, cry me a river that you weigh the same as you weighed in high school!" It's ridiculous, because what they can't seem to understand is that even though I'm "so thin," I didn't feel healthy or good about it.... and dropping that much weight in a short period of time takes as much toll on your body as gaining the same amount of weight.
It's all about perspective, and people are too closed-minded to see other POVs.

So true, Lily! We're all here for the same reason... To get rid of acne. No one should have to deal with negative comments from family, friends, or people on this forum.
And that's terrible how your friends acted! They shouldn't have focused so much on how thin you were. That's meaningless if you aren't healthy or happy! I hope you're doing better now!
Thanks I guess they were just jealous since most of them have gained 30 pounds since high school
I'm up to around 117ish now, slowly starting to put some weight back. I imagine I'll get back up to 125ish once I start working out again and putting on some muscle.
How did your dentist's appt go? Well, I assume?
Thanks

Hahaha! They probably were jealous! 😛 And that's good to hear!
My dentist appointment went well. I used the Cure Natural Aqua Gel in the morning to exfoliate my lips and that actually kept them in good condition all day yesterday. I kept my lip balm in hand during the appointment though. I applied it before and after the cleaning just to be safe! Surprisingly, they didn't dry out at all though. And they certainly got tested... I had to have an x-ray check-up. My hygienist was pulling on the side of my mouth to get to my back teeth. Lol!
Awwww yay!!! I'm totally an acne.org cheerleader! lol hahaha
My neck and back SUCK today, so it's been hard for me to stay positive. Stupid near-car accident. I was very whiny today. I think I'm going to take a nap because I couldn't fall asleep until 2 AM last night due to the pain. Grrrrr. Hoping to feel happier soon. We all have our off days!
SHOOT!!!
I totally posted all these nice responses to Lily and it got erased on here. I'll respond again later...too tired. Blah.
Haha Gina, I saw the comments and was just going to quote you to respond, but I got a completely different set of comments from you! Anyway, they were there, thank you, you're a sweetie! But yeah, I had a handful of friends who were concerned, and then others who brushed it off with "Well, at least you're skinny!" I completely agree with you that the media makes women hate one another... there's so much jealousy and insecurity going on. And that's not even counting the women who are straight up psychotic :/
Hi Rachel and everybody!
I ordered my Cure last night, I can't wait tiil it comes.
For anyone out there worrying about coloring your hair, here's my experience today: Told my stylist that I started taking accutane and gave her all the details of how it's affected my hair. When I started accutane my scalp was super itchy and a little flaky and I was shedding more than normal but that has all settled down and I've been using a dandruff shampoo twice a week, a hydrating shampoo the other days and taking biotin. My scalp is now a little sensitive but my hair is not excessively dry or anything. So she decided to use this hair color they have in the salon by Redken that has no amonia in it and is really mild. It stays on a little longer than most (35 min. vs 20 min.) but it was not uncomfortable at all. A little itchy but very bearable. And now the greys are covered and I am bee-yoo-tee-full, haha! She also did a deep conditioning treatment which helped. So anyway it was a successful experience into my first coloring on accutane! Yay!!
Now if only these stupid cysts would just go away. Come on accutane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh no! I'm sorry, Gina! I hope you feel better soon. Try to get some rest!
I got an email of something you posted here and it appears to be missing now, so that must be what you were talking about. Honestly, I'm so glad I don't get negative comments from my friends and family. I would not tolerate it if I did. It's certainly helpful to have supportive people around!

And that's great to hear your salon visit went well. I'll have to keep that in mind if I decide to dye my hair during my course. Thanks!!

YAYAYYY... spreading the Cure love! You're going to be so glad you got it! I ordered mine probably 40 days ago and use it around 4-5 times a week... it's maybe 25% gone. Totally worth the money if you ask me!
I hardly get negative comments about anything at all... I think it's because all my friends are terrified of me which I'm totally okay with!
Day 22
Ugh. What a day. This afternoon my eyes were feeling so tired and I had a bit of a backache. My derm said to call him if I have any kind of ache or pain, but it really wasn't that bad, so I didn't worry about it. Plus, that could just be due to my poor posture when I'm at work. Terrible, I know. I did have a backache on Sunday, but it went away after I rested for a bit.
The zit I developed near my chin is still there. It isn't sore anymore like it was yesterday. It has also gotten smaller. Yesterday it was a little swollen, which was not attractive! You know those swollen zits that make your face just a little deformed looking¦ Yeah. I kept Neosporin on it for a while yesterday evening and then I put a salicylic acid spot treatment on it last night and this morning.
The other zit I felt forming on my left cheek is starting to surface. It's nothing major so far and hopefully it'll stay that way! I might be getting another zit on my scalp. This one is on the left side of my head. There's a small bump there and I'm not sure if it just popped up or if it's been there and I just haven't noticed.
The outside of nose is pretty dry. I think that's partially due to Accutane, but also due to the fact that I've been blowing my nose quite a bit.
The rash I had on my collarbone is completely gone thanks to the Cortizone I kept putting on it. Now if only I could remember to reapply that stuff to the rash on my thigh¦ *scratches thigh rash*
Anywho. I will be spending my night stuffing my face with my grandma's lasagna and watching the season premiere of Pretty Little Liars with the best friends. I love that show! Does anyone else watch it?
