Hi everyone,

I have been kind of stalking this site for awhile. I really wanted to do as much research before starting my accutane. I am 25 years old and have moderate to severe cystic acne. I have noticed that my acne is actually getting worse as I am getting older (not sure if that has happened to anyone else?). It has started to move onto my shoulders and back (and not little pimples but the big, painful cystic ones. I used to not care about my acne so much because I figured it was part of growing up but I have found that as I am getting older my confidence has gone down because of the acne. I backed out of starting accutane once before almost a year ago but have finally decided to take the plunge! I took my first pill this morning and I am pretty nervous about side effects. I hope I am not sounding like a big baby but you hear so much about them!! I know there is usually an initial breakout so I hope it doesn't discourage me too much!!

I thank everyone for their support ahead of time!! And I can't wait to see my face to start to clear up!!

Hey! Congrats on starting Accutane. It's definitely hard to finally take the plunge. I actually changed derms the first time I was suggested Accutane. Turns out the second derm I went to also suggested Accutane. I was on Accutane for 7 months, and I'm so happy with my skin now. I've been off of it a little over two months, and I have my dream skin. Is it utterly flawless? I'll be honest--it's not. I still get a few random bumps, most of which nobody else would notice. It's definitely been a life-changing experience.

I can't wait to hear about all the great things that Accutane is going to do for you. Keep us updated!

I had the exact same situation!! I backed out of taking accutane half a year ago but the acne kept on coming so i decided to take the plunge. I should've just gotten it over with the first time but there were so many horror stories, but i feel like we should just concentrate on the positive, i am no longer going to read anything negative. I am 1 year older than you, i think at our age we're not going to outgrow it. We both started at the same time, glad i have someoen to go through this with.

Thanks!! It's really encouraging to hear that!! I'm not looking to have flawless skin but having some kind of relief from the acne would be awesome!! Still trying to figure the site out so I hope I replied to this the right way! Thanks for your input! It helps to put me more at ease!

Thanks for the feedback!! I have read your posts already!! My derm started me on 40mg and talked about increasing it, not sure how I feel about it. I totally agree with you, that we aren't going to grow out of our acne but I still like to think that I will. I am happy that we started at the same time so that we can share our experiences with eachother!!

Day 2

Took my second pill today. Still nervous but feeling a little better about starting! No side effects yet today. My biggest fear is the headache side effect since I get headaches pretty regular! I think it helps that I work nights so even though I take my Accutane in the morning, I go right to bed so I hope this helps to alleviate any headaches I might get. I've been drinking tons of water, just to keep hydrated. I have also started to put on lip balm compulsively even though my lips aren't chapped (yet). Any suggestions for a good lip balm are welcome!

I am still trying to figure out the website so if anyone could let me know how to get a picture up I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance everyone!

The best of luck to you! I about to begin Accutane in about a month. This is my THIRD time and I'm still nervous! The first time was about 15 years ago. It was very drying and I think the doc had me on too high of a dose. Years later (2003), w/a different doc, I was on a lower dose (40mg, 1xday) for 9 months with not a single side effect except great skin! Well, at 45 years old I've given up thinking I'll ever outgrow it. My skin is changing but the acne is back. I must say that it was worth it each time and I didn't have major flare ups for years. At my age, I know I am going through a lot of hormonal issues. This isn't going away on it's own and Isotretinoin is the ONLY thing that has ever cleared me up. It's totally worth it and the time will zip by. I am excited for you (and me, too)!

We are on the same dose as well. What is your weight? I wouldn't worry about increasing the dose as long as it is right for your weight. I wouldn't go more than 1mg/kg unless you have very severe acne, 40mg/day is pretty much 1mg/kg for me b/c i only weigh 96 lbs.

During the course, I'm just going to think about how nice it would be to wake up every morning and not have to put on makeup, not have to feel self conscious about people staring at my acne or scars and be able to go swimming and put my head under the water! You should do the same, that way the course will fly by.

Day 6

Hey everyone! So I have haven't been on in a few days but I have a few moments to update. My face has felt like it has been on fire the past few days and my nose has turned to fire engine red. It has even started to peel! I have been slathering on moisturizer (sp?) and sunscreen. I hope that at least my red nose will go away soon!

I have really big pores with tons of black heads (yuck!!) on my nose and chin. These all seem to be turning into whiteheads. I hope thats a good sign!! Other than that, no other side effects and I can't wait to start seeing changes in my faces!!

hey! so i think i'm one day ahead of you! i started on the 18th. but it sounds like we have like the exact same acne (moderate cystic back acne, huge face pores). and we're both on 40 mg!

my nose has been so freaking itchy and irritated too, especially today.

good luck with your treatment!

Day 15

My face is very very dry and peeling even though I put on moisturizer every chance I get. I have been able to keep my lips from being chapped by using chap stick. My acne seems to be getting worse every day when I get up. I now have about 13 huge cystic nodules on my face, 4 at the nape of my neck, and 3 on my shoulders. I guess this is the initial breakout that everyone keeps talking about. I hope this clears up soon!! I have had a dull headache the past two days but not sure if this is a side effect or sinus'. Has anyone else had as bad as an initial breakout as I am?
