Questions about benzoyl peroxide

Hello people,

I am new in acne.org. I am 24 years old and my acne started some months ago due to birth control pills. My doctor recommended me to use benzoyl peroxide. I have been using it for a week and my acne is now significantly better. However, I still don't know a lot about this product and I would like to hear about experiences of other people. I have read that if you use it for a long time it can stop working because your skin gets used to it. Is that true? How can I avoid that? And also, I don't know if it's healthy to use it for a long time. What do you think? Thank you for your time. I am very glad to meet other people with acne so we can share our own experiences :)

Vicpaz.

Id add that whilst it works effectively it depletes the antioxidants in the skin so you have to keep using it and I found that it also prevents skin from healing.

Hello,

I have very severe acne, and with me benzoyl peroxide [Edited link out] doesn't work anymore. From what I know it doesn't treat the cause of acne, but it stops the infections on the skin. It's kind of a desinfecting gel.

If you have mild acne, I think you are pretty good with it. I think it is not unhealthy as it's not like antibiotics or pills. It is best to contact your doctor regarding this. He can have a look at your skin.

I truly from the heart wish your acne doesn't get worse. Probably not. Normally this would happen before your 24 ;).

Hello, thank you for your answer.

My acne is from mild to moderate. After 1 week using benzoyl peroxide I noticed an improvement, but in the second week my acne came back. My doctor told me that benzoyl peroxide will be ok for me, but now I have been 4 weeks on it and I don't see any big difference :( perhaps it's slightly better than before using it, but it's almost the same. I will stick with it for a few weeks more and see what happens. I am also looking at other alternatives such as herbal supplements so I can fight acne in different ways and not only rely on bp.

I am sorry about your acne. I have read that if you use bp too much it may stop working because your skin gets used to it and it doesn't absorb it any more. Maybe that's what happened to you. But if you didn't use it for a while you can try to go back to it now, maybe it will work again. Contact your doctor and see what he/she thinks.

I hope you get better.

Update: it's my 4th week on benzoyl peroxide 5% and I don't have cystic acne at all. However, my skin has become really oily and is full of clogged comedones and some of them develop into white heads. Is that normal? Everybody on the internet claims that benzoyl peroxide works wonders for them. Why does this happen to me? It's so annoying...

Sorry that this happened to you. It also bleached all my towels so I guess this is normal :( I am noticing that if I reduce the amount my skin is a bit better, so I am planning to buy the 2,5% concentration in the next few days.
