Okay so I started using benzoyl peroxide (2.5%) overnight about 3 weeks ago and I had built up to it effectively - no red, flakiness, etc. then I went to Florida and had to stop applying my benzoyl peroxide + clindamycin overnight for a week. When I started back up, my skin got red and peely again. I picked off the peely skin and applied clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide last night and woke up this morning with BRIGHT PINK skin directly where I'd applied it. I'm scared I applied it on raw skin and therefore gave myself a benzoyl peroxide burn - is the pinkness permanent? Is it a burn? My other question is, should I continue my regimen? It had been working fantastically before spring break, but now benzoyl peroxide side effects are back! /potential BURNS!
It will go away in a few days. For dryness I ask people to wet their skin with cool water then apply plain Vaseline (which contrary to a popular belief does not plug pores) from tube (not jar!) or Cetaphil cream or Vanicream. I also ask people to stop benzoyl peroxide for few days until the skin recovers, plus I ask them to apply sunscreen every morning. But, of course, you should contact your doctor and ask her for her advice.
I'm actually going through the same the currently. This is my second time getting a benzoyl peroxide irritation - so to answer your question, no. The pinkness is NOTpermanent !! Eventually, it will go away in a 1-2 days. It could be a burn/irritation but this is a normal side effect when using benzoyl peroxide. You're either using too much concentration or applying too much of the product. You couldcontinue your regimen, AFTER you recover your skin (common sense) but only apply smaller amount - or you could leave it all alone together and try something else. The best thing you could do right now is get some ice to cool it down, apply benadryl if your skin is itchy, or add moisturizer to your face to reduce redness and dryness.
This will be day 2 without applying benzoyl peroxide. I don't think the redness has gone down at all, which I was surprised about, especially overnight. I think it may have even spread in between places I applied BP. How long should I give it to go away before I start using it again? Or do you think I should keep going and push through it?
