It seems like every sunscreen out there has crappy ingredients that can make us acne ridden people break out more. Can anyone recommend a physical sunscreen with minimal ingredients that won't aggravate acne

Cerave was recommended to me but man, that burned my face so bad.

i use the nutrogena products, ultra dry sheer for years, and recently I've tried their clear face offering, which I do like better (I like the way it feels on my face better)....neither of these break me out

but everyone is different, so do a test spot and see what works for you

I've been using Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer sunscreen, and so far it has been good. It's very dry to touch, and does not leave any greasy residue. No break outs (yet).

I use Neutrogena in the spray can on my arms, lightly on my chest and back- even it can break me out.

On my face, I only use foundation with SPF (L'oreal Visible Lift if normal-dry, L'oreal True Match if oily)

I've heard good things about Neutrogena as well - though I haven't tried them.

I'm currently using the facial sunscreen by Sk:n - SPF 30. It doesn't break me out at all, and feels ok on the skin.

I use neutrogena sheer dry. My skin freaks when I put other products on it, that are out of my norm. I always break out from sunscreen if it's on my face. Sheer dry doesn't break me out at all. Feels good on the skin. Soaks into the skin quickly too. Nice smell.

If it burned your skin, probably most sunscreens with chemical active ingredients will burn your skin.

CHEMICAL sunscreens (in the active ingredients list on a bottle)

  • Avobenzone
  • Homosalate
  • Octisalate
  • Octocrylene
  • Oxybenzone
  • Oxtinoxate
  • Menthyl Anthranilate
  • Oxtocrylene

Chemical sunscreens supposedly work by creating a reaction with UVA/UVB rays that reduces the "energy" of it as it hits your skin.

PHYSICAL sunscreens work by blocking and scattering the rays directly. These ingredients are older and better tested and fairly inert, meaning they aren't going to react with your skin or give you that "burned" feeling. There are only two types.

  • Zinc Oxide
  • Titanium Dioxide

The reason most sunscreens in the drugstore are partially or fully chemically based is because physical sunscreens don't look very nice. They are thicker, harder to rub in, and give you a little bit of a whitish tint. I wasted a lot of money trying to find a cosmetically elegant physical sunscreen. I have tried every physical sunscreen you can buy in the typical drugstore and honestly none of them look or feel good. The only brand I have found that actually smooths on nicely and works under makeup is the Mychelle Sunshield or the Mychelle Replenishing Solar Defense. The brand is a bit pricey, but last a long time if you're only using it on your face. I use cheaper sunscreens on the rest of my body because those areas aren't as sensitive.

No kidding. If I had a dime for every dime I've wasted . . . for every time I had to start over with makeup application because of the balling up. Will check this brand out.

Before starting Accutane I was using Cetaphil Dermacontrol SPF 30 and this seems to stay put underneath my make up. But its oil control, which I don't need at the moment. So I switched back to a tube of Kate Sommerville Daily Deflector, which I paid way too much money for on a whim about 6 months ago. But, while a barrier sunscreen (TO) with a slight white-ish cast, it works well under my make up.

For when I'm out running, biking, or swimming it's Neutrogena Sport SPF 70 all the way, which is a physical sunscreen. Has never seemed to break me out.
