I've had acne for a few years now and I just tried Neutrogena's Oil Free Acne Wash with 2% salicylic acid. I had a small breakout the next day... some people on the forums said that that was because it was pulling all the gunk and dirt out of my pores and that the breakouts are to be expected. Is that true and should I keep on using it?

Hello!

Salicylic acid works by breaking down "keratin" a protein found in the skin, and just generally cleans out the layer of skin responsible for clogging the sebaceous gland. It's possible it could be drawing out some of the comedones in your skin, and causing a mild breakout. It's hard to tell so early on, but give it a couple weeks and see how your skin likes it.

Good luck, and I hope this helps. (:
