I am in my second week of the regimen. I am using about 2/3 a finger length of BP on my face. Last night I kept waking up and was up till about 6am, because my face was very inflamed, burning, tingling, numb and itchy at the same time. Oddly enough not peeling very much though. I didnt feel this until hours after applying the regimen before bed. Now this is the second time this has happened to me in about 9 days on the regimen. I have oily sensitive skin and I am not using any moisturizer at the moment. I have never used moisturizer in my life as I feel it will clog my pores. I did a year of accutane without any moisturizer and was fine.
Has this every happened to anybody else? And do you think it is a result of not using moisturizer? Does a moisturizer calm inflammation and burning? Im trying to decide if I should use less BP or use the same amount of BP and start using a moisturizer. Ive used 5% bp in the past and never have I had my face so inflamed. Then again ive never used bp twice a day before.
If you're not using moisturiser you're not on the regimen. You're on a regimen of sorts, but not Dan's. You need to moisturise or your skin is going to be really really irritated and your acne won't clear up.
The difference between using BP on the regimen and using BP in general is that the dose is much higher. Not a 'thin layer', more like a mask of BP that absorbs pretty quickly. With such a high dose of BP, you're going to need to add moisture to your skin, otherwise your situation is just going to get worse. In one of Dan's videos he explains how one day he got that sick of his acne and just slathered tons of BP on his face in an act of desperateness - hence how he discovered his regimen.
Eventually you're going to be using 2 finger lengths of BP (which is a lot compared to normal) and your face will need a moisturiser. With that much BP, your skin will not break out and if it does, BP will override it. Trust me!
Good luck and I hope it works out for you!
Hmmm okay i see the point your trying to make. Now is there anything specific about dans moisturizer that makes it work best? Or can I use my Cetaphil cream moisturizer I have from my accutane days?
When I put dans moisturizer on my chin which is the most sensitive part on my face since it has either pigmentation or rosacea. It stings a bit and my chin goes red immedietely. When i put cetaphil cream on which is thicker it doesnt really sting at all., but still goes red a bit.
Putting either dans moisturizer or cetaphil on the rest of my face doesnt cause any stinging though. So im just trying to decide which one is best?
Lots of people have had success using alternative moisturizers. Essentially, it's about finding one that works for you. One that doesn't string too much, one that keeps flakes somewhat at bay, and one that doesn't break you out. Each of our skins is different so there can't really be one go-to moisturizer for everybody, unfortunately.
Also make sure you wait a while after BP before you apply moisturizer. Dan says up to 15 minutes, but even more is good. I found that applying moisturizer too soon after BP caused intense redness and burning...
At this point in the regimen, applying any moisturizer will make it sting. It comes with using BP! Once your skin gets used to it then applying moisturizer won't sting anymore. If you feel Dan's moisturizer doesn't hydrate your skin enough, try using your Cetaphil. Personally I love my Cetaphil as a night time moisturizer.

For me, some moisturizers seemed to never stop burning my face to the ends of the earth... e.g. Dan's and Cetaphil... even after months on the Regimen... also, my skin would look fine after BP application, but as soon as the moisturizer went on... GAARGH! Looked like I dunked my face in hot soup!

I agree with you! After the BP goes on your skin looks really good. Then adding the moisturizer make it look not as good. But I know if I don't moisturize my face will end up cracking or flaking in a few days so I just need to prevent that. How long have you been on the regimen? I found that stinging and redness to last even after I got clear. I think it was around 4months+ when I started to notice my face didn't get the redness that came with the moisturizer. Apart from my cheeks which is almost always pink or rosey.

Really? Hmm... I did the Regimen for maybe three months last year... then I got to the point where I couldn't stand the redness anymore, so I ditched it, and afterwards went with less BP, once a day, and no moisturizer just to avoid the redness... and I but in retrospect I really should have waited it out until at least the six month mark. I've been on the Regimen on and off since fall 2009 but I don't think I ever stuck it out long enough, or was consistent enough, because I wanted results waaay too fast. I'm hoping this time will be different...

If the regimen helped with your acne, then try to stick as close to it as possible. The redness does go away over time and eventually it will look and feel like your old skin again, minus the acne. At least that is how it went for me. But yeah, moisturizing is really important. That plus adding jojoba oil really did make a difference to the look of your skin.
