New To Regimen With Question On How Chlorines Affects Skin!

Hi everyone. I am new to the regimen and I am dead set on following it until I see results. I am just so frustrated with my acne and everything I have done so far seems to have done absolutely nothing. I am REALLY hoping this will work!

My question is how does chlorine affect your skin? I am a competitive swimmer so I spend a good 2-3 hours in the pool every day. I am assuming this isn't doing wonders for my skin, but I am curious to know the extent of the damage it may be doing. If it is doing harm is there any way to combat it?

Also, here are the products I intend to use.

*Cetaphil daily cleanser

*Dan''s 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide

I am debating what moisturizer to use. Since I have oily proned skin, I am having trouble committing to something that I associate acne with in my brain, but I have read tons of posts saying that it is absolutely critical for the regimen. So, here are the products I've been considering: Evian Facial Spray ( http://www.sephora.com/evian ), Cetaphil Daily Moisturizer ( http://www.cetaphil.com/products/daily-facial-moisturizer-SPF15 ), and Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion ( http://www.aveeno.com/skincare/products/daily-moisturizing-lotion ).

Again, I am so new to this that I have no idea what gets good reviews or what's supposed to be helpful, so comments would be so greatly appreciated. Especially on my products!

Thanks you so much!

Hi Evergreen.

Personally, Chlorine is a HUGE problem for me. (my facial skin is extremely damaged and hypersensitive so I react to pretty much everything). I only cleanse my face with bottled or distilled water, and that stops the burning, tight feeling that I get from tap water. Everyone's skin is different though obviously so has different reactions to things. but 2-3 hours of chlorine per day can't be great though. It's a very strong chemical after all.

I wonder if applying an oily balm on your face while swimming would help ? I'm thinking that would create a water and chlorine resistant barrier until washed off properly, but I'm not sure eusa_think.gif

Also I really don't like the amount of chemicals that are in the Cetaphil Daily Cleanser. I don't see how something with SLS and Perfume can be accepted as a product for sensitive skin. Those 2 things are up there on the list of the top 5 ingredients to avoid.

The Evian Spray looks like a good idea. It's useful to take with you to the pool etc. But for when you're at home, I'd just buy a big bottle of Evian water from your local store and use that. The bottled water and the spray contains exactly the same ingredient: just pure Evian mineral water.

Thank you so much for the reply, LacyDecay.

Yes, the Chlorine does have a ton of negative affects on my skin, the biggest one just being how harsh it is.

Do you have any more suggestions for the cleanser? I am kind of new to this, so I am a bit lost!!

I think I will try the spray/the water and see how it works out for me.

Again, thank you so, so much for the reply. It really helped.

Hi Evergreen,

when I first started following the regimen I used all of Dan's products but in the first month I found that his moisturiser wasnt moisturising enough, so I switch to cetaphil moisturiser. After a while though, my skin adjusted well to the BP and then I switched back to Acne.org products and thats when my skin became completely clear. I still sometimes use cetaphil during particular weeks when I feel my skin is dryer than usual. I really like it but it is thick and greasy so if you have naturally oily skin, you may not like the sensation.

Regardless of whether you have oily skin though, moisturising is essential to the regimen and its important to follow the steps exactly until you are clear. ONce you are clear you can then experiment and adjust the regimen to suit you. I would say that 2 hours in the pool will be drying to your skin anyway, so having a heavy duty moisturiser (like cetaphil) would be useful during the day (when swimming) and perhaps something lighter at night (like acne.org's moisturiser).

Either way, good luck with following the regimen and let us know how you get on! :)

What time of the day do you swim?

It would be best if you could do the regime fairly soon after your work out is finished
