I've been on the Acne.org regimen for over a year now and it has helped me a lot. Currently my skin has turned worse again so I'm using more of BP to counter the acne. That lead to my skin getting very dry and flaky again.
I'm wondering how much I can and should counter this by moisturizing more. In the Acne.org description it says "Benzoyl peroxide has a drying and peeling effect which is thought to help prevent this occurence and tends to transform red or ruddy, irritated looking skin into balanced, calm, healthy looking skin."
Is using more and excessive amounts of moisturizer hindering the BP from working as well as it could? Is a certain dryness of the skin "necessary" for good results?
I don't think so; as long as the moisturizer is non-comodegenic. The regimen I use says to wait 5-15 minutes from when you apply the BP to when you apply the moisturizer though...let it fully soak in and do its thing. Your skin NEEDS to be moisturized...dry skin will produce more oil to overcompensate for the dryness, more oil = more breakouts, etc.
At the time of the post I used Simple Kind to skin hydrating moisturiser.
4 days ago I got a CeraVe moisturising lotion for dry to very dry skin because I felt that the Simple moisturiser wasn't strong enough. Sadly the CeraVe moisturiser moisturises even less than the Simple one and I also get a strong burning/stinging feeling and my face turns red where I apply the CeraVe moisturiser. I looked through the ingredients and I noticed it has alcohol in it. I'm guessing my facial skin reacts badly to those ingredients in a moisturizer.
I've been on the Acne.org regimen for more than 10 months now and used another BP for a couple of months before that. During all that time, my acne never fully cleaned up and I always battled dryness and flakyness. Presently, after using BP for 10+ months, the dryness-level is almost at an all time high. It is safe to say that I'm quite fed up and don't feel like BP is the ultimate solution to my acne.
Today I decided to halt using BP and switch to a different cleansing facial wash and a soothing moisturizer. My acne might come back a lot worse, it might also work though. I guess I'll see in the next few days.
I'm open to any advice!
