Something screwy with the "Mann" diet.

Ok, I know I just posted a link to the free Mann diet book, and this looks a bit hypocritical but I've been thinking, and reading on this forum.

Lots of people here are saying things like "One bite of chocky and my skin goes mad." The Mann diet is based on the concept of low GI keeps your insulin and IGF1 under control and therefore the diet includes sugary but low GI foods like lofat yoghurt and chocolate milk!

On New Year's Day I ate white chocolate, strawberry milk and a white bread roll and the results were horrible. But in theory only the bread should have contributed to that but my experience, and the experience of people on this website is that sugar counts, regardless of the GI.

There is something really wrong with the "its all about GI" theory and I'd say not just wrt to acne, but I don't want to say low GI is completely wrong, but I think we have to follow our experience and common sense when it comes to sugar.

What do other's think? I'm just a sample of one, after all.

Lowfat yogurt is made by replacing fats with sugars.
Chocolate milk is like a sugar cocktail.
Pretty much everything you listed is loaded with sugar and has a relatively high GI
.
Insulin is released in response to sugar in the blood stream. The simpler the carb, the faster the sugar gets catabolized and floods the blood stream, which further increases insulin and the hormonal response. "sugary but low GI" is somewhat of a contradiction

If you want to keep insulin and IGF1 under control, cut out or significantly reduce sugar. If it's sweet, it almost absolutely has a high GI. If you want a low glycemic diet, then stick to complex carbs, eat your fiber, and eat plenty of fat and protein with your meals - or if you're feeling up to it, you can ditch the carbs completely.

Yes all those things are full of sugar. No they are not high GI. You would think so, but lowfat yoghurt is 33, chocolate milk 37 and white chocolate 34. All low GI.

And that's my point. We know from experience that those things are bad for acne, but if you subscribe to the high GI = lots of insulin = lots of acne, you will be misled. You could be merrily pigging out on chocolate, yoghurt and chocolate milk and wondering why your pimples are popping out all over.

So the low GI story is not the only thing at work. Sugar itself seems to be bad, regardless of what it's mixed with.

No disagreement there: sugar itself is the culprit for many of us. GI is just a tool. Limiting GI is just an easier (or sufficient) way of limiting the impact of sugar for most people than to totally cut it out altogether. I think the whole low-GI thing gets spread around so much that why it's potentially effective gets lost in translation.

There are people here that claim low-GI to be sufficient. For some of us, however, that will never be enough. The only thing that worked for me personally was eliminating sugars completely. If you're curious enough, I'd suggest trialing a ketogenic diet and seeing how your skin responds.

ketogenic sounds tough! For now, I'm seeing what happens by limiting added sugar to 20g /day and we'll take it from there. Limiting sugar is much easier than managing GI, which is already low in this house anyway, because its written on the pack. :)
