Thought you might like to know:
I just called a well-known food producing company (Tyson foods) that produces a brand of chicken I'd recently seen at a local store but was unaware that they actually owned the brand. My question had to do with what the "natural flavors" on their ingredients consisted of. They would not disclose what their ingredients consisted of. That's not shady at all though...
Food producers have incentive to keep the food supply healthy only insofar as the food keeps us alive long enough to have children who will buy more junk food. They have no incentive to keep individuals healthy for a long time. Profit, reporting to shareholders, stock value, not being fined... this is what they value. Eating the right foods and maintaining optimal health will always be a struggle for the individual. Knowledge is power here. I wish we could trust others to feed us but I guess we can't. Good find and thanks for reporting.
Natural flavorings & other additives that might appear on ingredient labels is far from the worst thing in Tyson chicken. They are the founders in our absolutely horrific in every way poultry industry. Our industrial food system pollutes our environment (ocean, rivers, lakes, air, soil), is responsible for 1/3 of greenhouse gases before it shipped around the world and it's not just cow farts, it's cruel, it makes us sick, and not only that, the farmers accepting the contracts to raise the chickens or eggs in these horrific methods end up being basically indentured servants.
Try to buy as little as possible from Big Food. And yes, that probably means eating less meat unless you are wealthy. Because raising & processing chicken the right way is actually quite expensive. Especially the processing. Especially for small producers who do free range as processing plants don't like to deal with small lots. Chicken wasn't a big part of our diet until Tyson came along.
