I just got a myriad of blood work done, mainly in the hopes that I would somehow find the cause of my acne.
The only thing unusual about my results was that I have high cholesterol (202) - but my LDL (bad) cholesterol is low (78), and my HDL (good) cholesterol is very high (114). So in theory, this is good. But my HDL Cholesterol isn't just high - it's over double the average for women, and is higher than my LDL, which is pretty rare.
I found litte useful information on the topic, except for this one article, interesting excerpts copied below: http://www.wellnessresources.com/health/articles/can_high_good_cholesterol_be_the_sign_of_a_problem/
"It is my belief that this is a sign of increased toxic stress wherein the elevation of HDL cholesterol is a compensating mechanism for LDL being damaged at a higher rate of speed. This means ones body is trying its best to get rid of the damaged cholesterol by increasing HDL. Interestingly, LDL levels may be rather low in this situation. I have seen many cases wherein a person has twice as much HDL as LDL, the opposite of a normal ratio. Such people are routinely told by their doctors they have nothing to worry about. In my experience these are some of the unhealthiest people I have encountered.
I noticed many years ago that people with this high HDL/low LDL profile either had some major form of inflammatory trouble (often autoimmune) or had a very high level of chemical sensitivity. Either situation is highly inflammatory, which correlates well with the new finding of increased inflammation and high HDL as a risk factor."
I wonder if anyone else suffering from acne has a similar cholesterol profile, and what the implications for this are?
I don't know offhand. There's info I'd gathered in the past here:
However HDL and LDL are the lipids that carry cholesterol around in your body. Neither is bad. The ratio of HDL to LDL and to triglycerides can mean something like particle size, which matters. Look into that.
LDL is what carries the cholesterol from the liver where it is made to the parts of your body that need it. And HDL is what carries the leftovers back to the liver.
Incidentally, there are other ''kinds of cholesterol" as well. But they don't have tests for them so they can't be concerned about them or drug you for them.
I have also recently had my blood work done and everything else was "normal" but my HDL cholesterol was very high. My MD said that it's almost double what he usually sees for his patients. I also suffer from chronic moderate/severe acne. I was trying to find a connection as well but I have yet to come across any relevant scientific studies regarding a connection between the two. If you do find out more about this please follow up!
I just saw another post by someone who got blood work done and said everything was normal except for high HDL cholesterol, so it sounds like it's a bit of a trend in acne sufferers.
From all that I have read, unusually high HDL cholesterol can be a result of inflammation (in fact, some doctors take high HDL as an indicator of inflammation). As acne is the result of inflammation, that's not entirely surprising.
As I currently eat an anti-inflammatory diet and exercise daily, figuring out the cause of the inflammation is going to be tougher. I know for a lot of people, it can be a food sensitivity, so I might try some food sensitivity tests and more elimination diets... SIGH.
Cholesterol is not the culprit in fact it is beneficial to us another allopathic scam what else is new Lipitor and the like are pure &*()ing poison , if you want dementia or Alzheimers later on in life that would be the way to go in fact the brain consists mostly of FAT and needs it to function properly .
Inflammation yes that is the culprit a great herbal tonic would be garlic , hawthorn , cayenne peppers and bilberry leaves combo that along with moderate exercise and plenty of sun shine ( no don't us chemical cancer causing sunscreen / coconut oil would be good ) and a diet consisting of good fats like extra virgin olive oil and butter and avoid processed / GMO food of course . As a bonus these herbs are anti-cancer as well.
