Does Anyone Else Feel Guilty Because Diet Does Not Clear Up Your Acne?

I have been experimenting with my diet for over a year now and my skin never got to the point where I was happy with it. I tried eating vegan, paleo, gluten free, dairy free, low glycemic load, etc. and my skin remained oily and and extremely clogged/ congested. I just started taking accutane again about 20 days ago, and already my skin is so much better. The thing is that I feel guilty for resorting to such an artificial method to clear up my skin. I still wonder if there's that perfect diet out there that will clear up my skin. I still eat really well (oats, rice, lean meats, fruits, and veggies), but there is no doubt that it's the accutane that's making the improvement in my skin and not my diet. I've done a lot of reading about primitive cultures and how they did not have acne, and I'm wondering how I'm so different than them since I have not been eating any processed foods. Could it be the pesticides, herbicides, plastics, chemicals, and non-organic products in my life? I just feel bad for not being able to figure this out naturally.

paigems....Don't feel bad ,we are all different and so people react differently ,we have to do what it works for us.

As far as diet goes ,I haven't noticed a lot difference in my breakouts either, only when I eat Chinese food, maybe the peanut oil, breaks me more than usual.

When I was younger I used Accutane, it cleared me really fast , but I had to stop , it affected my cholesterol levels,I see that a lot of the members complain about long term side effects, and once I felt really guilty because in one of my reply posts I said ,being on Accutane was fun ,the meaning for me was ,it was fun because I didn't get any annoying painful cystic acne, and I also didn't have to worry about what food to eat or avoid,or what over the counter products to use to treat my pimples.

Turning menopausal hasn't been fun for me , the worst cystic acne I have ever experienced in my life .

And if I knew that Accutane wasn't going to affect my cholesterol levels I would take Accutane without hesitation, just a short course to control my breakouts .

After Accutane ,people still need to use other forms of acne control ,if not dealing with breakouts anymore, then a good cleanser exfoliator and moisturizer .

Accutane is not a forever fix ,I know that , and if using with safety in mind, getting blood work done to check that it doesn't affect our bodies long term ,then I guess as a last resort then its up to each individual.

Concerning foods and the way they are grown ,everything is different these days .They are called GMO's,I mean ,people sometimes don't have the time or the meanings to eat healthy , we can only try ,stressing about it causes us to have more stress , and in my book, stress is probably the root of all disease.

All crops are designed to resist fungal spores , so they are injected with insecticides and more salicylates, that is how cotton is grown these days and a lot of the food that we eat , but we can't go around being paranoid about everything, that is no life .

So ,I could go and on , my conclusion, we have to do what we have to do.

Take care.

You ask a really good question, and obviously you tried a lot of diet adjustments. I wish there was more definitive proof that diet has an effect on acne. I do think cleaning up your diet can help some people, but it's not going to help all people. My sons have mostly mild acne but it gets worse in the winter and it's always frustrating trying to figure out how to fix it. It's not severe enough for Accutane, but nothing ever really clears them 100%. They eat a good diet, don't eat dairy or much sugar, but they're teenage boys who love to eat -lol! And it can drive you nuts trying to eliminate foods, when it's not clear what the trigger food may be. They've both been breaking out more than usual the past week and I've been wondering if eating pizza 2-3 nights in a row caused it?? Who knows?! It can really make you crazy!

Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry you're struggling with your acne atm. I know how difficult it can be :(

This is my second course of accutane. My first course kept me relatively clear for a period of time, but the acne came back. My acne is very resistant and doesn't seem to respond to topicals or many oral medications even after taking accutane.

Diet does have some effect on my acne, but manipulating my diet has not been able to get me completely clear yet. Pizza 2-3 nights in a row would definitely have a negative effect on me, though!

I tried diet and natural stuff for years with very mixed results. I've found through years of punishing myself with so called healthy diets that the best thing that has worked for my mild/moderate acne is a Duac cream (clindamycin and BP) and, most importantly, a good moisturiser. I use Cetaphil with a few drops of Jojoba oil and have seen a 70% improvement in my skin. These days I'm more worried about my hair loss than a few clogged pores.

To be honest, although experimenting with diet has helped broaden my knowledge of healthy foods, the stress and the constant worry of eating 'right' really wasn't worth it. The guilt these things cause is counter productive. You end up trying to cure your acne and by the end of it you could develop a borderline eating disorder like I did for a while.

I really wouldn't feel guilty about what hasn't worked for you (diet) and what does (Accutane) because whatever works at getting rid of this horrible disease is the goal you've been aiming for.

Unfortunately, duac and jojoba oil don't really do much for my skin...

I don't really feel stressed by eating right. Even if I didn't have a problem with acne I'd want to eat this way because I know it's healthy. I enjoy the food I eat and I don't really feel like I'm too restricted. I do, though, sometimes wonder if something is wrong with my diet because I haven't been able to get clear like others. I also know that accutane won't be a long term solution for me. Most likely my acne will come back after this course, and that makes me really sad :(

I'm sorry to hear that. if it's any consolation, after so many years of trying, I just happened to blindly stumble my way to a skin care routine that has cleared up most of my acne. I've often thought there was no hope and around about this time last year I was 27 years old with some of the worst acne of my life. Around a month later, I just worked out a routine that worked for me and I have been relatively clear for 10 or 11 months now. My point in saying this is that you could just find a treatment that works for you one day and that will be that...no more acne/severely reduced acne. You might even find this course of Accutane finally does the trick.

Well I'm very happy to hear that you found something that works for you! I can totally sympathize with others who have acne. It's a horrible thing to have to deal with.

I can stay relatively clear by cleansing with just watermelon seed oil and not using makeup. Even mineral makeup breaks me out. I know it might sound silly, but I really miss being able to wear makeup! Even when I keep my routine to a minimum like this, though, my skin is still so congested. I hate how other people can see black clogged pores on my face and there's so many of them. I really do hope the accutane works this time and it doesn't wear off like last time.
