Hey,
I haven't posted on here in years. Not because I was cured but just stoped.
Anyways, I been following a similar diet to the Paleo template the last 1.5 years. I was still getting mild to moderate acne here and there and had oily skin. But compared to before, it was better. Not 100% clear like most people experience unfortunately. I couldn't stop my clean and clear benzoyl peroxide face wash despite my diet. I also take fermented cod liver oil, probiotics, digestive enzymes, saurkraut and vitamin d.
Well about 2 weeks ago I wanted to try out the oil cleansing method that I been hearing alot of people having great success online for years. I wanted to try natural topical methods to help control my oil production. Well it went horribly wrong for me! Suddenly after a week I have gotten painful chin, upper lip, nose and eyebrow cystic acne and zits! Obviously after a week I had to stop it and went back to my benzoyl peroxide face wash. Its been a week now since I stoped the oil cleansing method but I am still breaking out like crazy! Obviously I realize I shouldn't of jumped with with both feet and switching over night. But while doing the oild cleansing method, I noticed my skin never gotten dry. Even when I used just castor oil and nothing else. And that supposedly is very drying for most people. Not for me! lol
Btw this is not teenage acne. I obviously will never outgrow this since I am 32 years old now.

Sorry this backfired. So you basically replaced benzoyl peroxide with oil, instead of weaning off the benzoyl slowly...I think that might have contributed to your breakouts. Any time I abruptly quit BP, I broke out worse....I had to endure the breakouts and never go back to it again. And maybe oil doesn't agree with your skin. Have you tried any PH balancing cleansers to help your skin rebalance itself?

Yeah I agree I should of went off benzoyl peroxide more slowly and gradually. I have quit it before without too many issues. But this time I replaced it with oil. So that might of been a problem.Even though they supposedly do not clog pores. But I guess for me they did. Also, I noticed they were pretty thick oils. So maybe in the future I can play around with thinner oils. But first I need to calm the mass inflamation and breakouts now. I think I did try PH cleansers in the past. Do you think putting lemon juice after cleaning my face is a good idea (for ph balancing as you said)?
What oils did you use? When I tried this I used grapeseed oil. Using oils ultimately led me to having the worst breakout of my life, but I think that was more to do with my overzealous use of rosehip oil as a "moisturizer" than the grapeseed oil I used to cleanse (I can tell because the breakout was concentrated to where I was using the rosehip).
Anyway, I do know that a lot of people try with olive oil or cocoanut oil or castor oil and those tend to be worse for acne prone skin because they are so thick.

I'm cautious about using thick oils, or any kind of oil. I use grapeseed oil but only in certain parts of my face, not all over. It's good to spot test before using something all over your face. I personally prefer PH balancing cleansers.
Lemon juice might help, but use it sparingly. If you use it daily, it can turn your PH too acidic. I recommend once or twice a week...that seems to work for me. Anything more than that, I start getting more redness. You don't want your skin to be too acidic or too alkaline. The ideal PH is 5.5...if you can find a cleanser that says "balancing" or "restoring" or "PH 5.5." (without sulfates and other harsh chemicals) that's probably your best bet.

I used jojoba oil and castor oil. From what I read, it says castor oil is very drying and not clogging. I kept playing with the ratios until I just used castor oil on its own. My skin never got overly dry. Well my experience was exactly what you said at the end. The castor oil was thick and probably completely clogged up my pores to a degree that I haven't seen in long time! lol
I used castor oil a few weeks ago and broke out terribly. I'm almost clear now after using a mild natural soap and continuing the tretinoin I've been on for almost a couple months now.
I have used castor oil in the past without breakouts, using the same method I used a few weeks ago when I broke out.
I think this clearly demonstrates that the condition or composition of your skin is important in determining the effects of oil cleansing. If you broke out from it before, you might break out from it again.
(I've used castor oil as well as olive oil, jojoba 'oil', almond oil, and hemp oil, all separately. I have not seen results from using these methods.)
Jojoba oil caused closed commodores on my forehead. I recommend safflower.
But the cystic acne sounds like an allergic response to me. are you sure it isn't a coincidence? Has anything else changed? What about stress?
No, nothing else has changed. I made sure of that.
Well now I am back to my benozyl peroxide cleanser and my cystic and white head seem to get alot better now.
I don't like to use chemicals, but for me this is what seems to help me even at 32 years old even with avoiding gluten, soy and dairy for almost 2 years!
So sometimes taking care of the internal is not enough! lol
I want to give some time for my skin to hopefully heal and atleast return to my mild type of acne.
But I may try a very thin oil mixed with tea tree oil for a moisturizer in a month or so. And even then I will put very little. No oil pulling crap. lol
Something else you might try after your skin calms down is pure honey. I use it many nights a week as a mask for a few hours and it's really helped with inflammation. It's also great for balancing your PH if you are too acidic...when using chemicals, your PH becomes acidic and you need something alkaline to balance it.
I suggest you give up on the oils altogether if you don't want to take your chances again. Try honey, but do a test spot first to see how your skin reacts.
