Straying From Clean Diet Occasionally Experiences?

Hello everyone. I'm new here and just made an account because i've read some of these posts and this seems a good place to ask this question. I am 22 year old male and I have had acne pretty much since I hit puberty. It stopped for a while in my late teens but recently became horrible, with cysts. It was so bad at one point that I went to the dermatologist and he almost immediately said I should go on accutane because it was so bad. I refused because I don't want that in my body and have read the horrible side effects. This was probably 9 or 10 months ago. He prescribed me tretinoin cream and some antibiotic pills and antibiotic cream. I stopped taking the antibiotics after a few days because I don't want to be on antibiotics long term. I patiently used the cream and I felt like it was somewhat helping but very slowly. I travelled to Indonesia and Philippines about a month after starting the cream and noticed while I was there my acne was getting better at a faster rate then when in America. Even though it was very humid and hot there and It was hard to use good face products there. When I returned I continued to use the cream and got better but still some acne and cysts.

Finally I started p90x which made me research dieting and I began to cut out all sugar and grains from my diet. I still had dairy but a lot less and only in the form of some cheese and plain greek yogurt sometimes. Mostly I ate meat, vegetables (alot), and sometimes sweet potato and brown rice. I noticed that my acne improved drastically and my skin felt less greasy. I then realized my whole life I have been a horrible eater and love greasy fat, sugary food and can eat alot. I was never overweight so I never saw it as a problem. Now I am looking more ripped and also have almost no acne. Last week I got sick and was a little depressed about certain things and started eating a lot of bad food for about 5 days straight. (sweet potato fries, gyros, burgers, cheesecake, icecream, pizza, cookies). It's like I woke up a few days ago and became a landmine of cysts and acne. I looked horrible and felt horrible. So I am on day 4 of eating clean again and it is starting to definitely clear up and I feel less oily. Sorry for the long story!!

My main question is, I want to be able to have maybe at least 1 day a week or maybe once every 2 weeks where I eat foods I love such as desserts or greasy foods like pizza or burgers. I am not exactly sure what causes me to break out so for now I am going to do the elimination thing. So In people's experience do you guys have 1 day where you eat whatever or occasionally eat whatever and manage your acne still? Or am I sentenced to a life with eating clean to prevent my acne? Thanks!

i had made a similar post,u could check what people had to say there.

a few more u would like to see -

this post of urs is something i can relate to because we had a small festival today and i had stuff like rosogolla(a sweet dairy balls dipped in sugar syrup) and some dessert, mutton curry which i usually dnt have.

specially the dairy-sweet combo sounds scary together, doesnt it?

but i have taken it easy and decided that no matter what i am not gonna fret about it all the time.

one, stressing is not gonna help me or my skin.

a lil' indulgence is actually worth it!

dairy and sugar are bad for acne in general but i am not sure if i am intolerant to them.if yes, then i would get cysts or at least some zits/acne etc for sure.

if not, then well - lets hope for the best.

to be more specific,i feel indulging once in a while in things u r NOT intolerant to allergic to is okay.

and the end of the day,no matter how proper and right it is to restrict one self,do not forget to live ur life.

so,let loose at times...just be careful but dnt stress a lot!

You have to figure out what you can do.

Thank you for those links, I will look through them!

You're right about living your life though. I am not sure out of sugar, dairy, or grains what I am sensitive too since I quit all of it during p90x. But I am now going to be clean again and slowly try each and see how I react. Either way, I just wonder even if you do have an intolerance or react to something by reintroducing it, if maybe you eat it occasionally like once a week it would be okay.

You have to figure out what you can do.

You are right, I guess I was just seeing if anyone had a specific experience with occasional cheating with foods that cause them issues

It depends on the reason. If its an intolerance and it causes acne as the reaction, then it will do so whenever you consume it.

My acne comes back if I do that, however never immediately.

I timed it once. I believe the 3rd - 4th day my skin started becoming oily again and the 5 - 6 day a few pimples popped up daily.

It blows.

On a positive note, my body fat is 9% and I have a six pack - don't even need to hit the gym.

I do indulge in more "risque" foods maybe once a week , like aanabill posted in one of the links she provided, I'm also a lover of indian food and whenever I pass by a take-out place after a long, tiring day at school or work, I can't help but be tempted to eat a delicious samosa and tell myself to hell with it lol (and pray to the acne god not to punish me) . Even when I'm avoiding dairy and eat more "clean" , I still break out so I don't even know what the real root problem is. I think I have an intolerance to dairy, though, but not sure. I'm just trying to figure things out right now while still trying to enjoy "cheating" once in a while. I guess it depends on what foods you're more sensitive, too, which I'm trying to figure out now for myself.

Cheating once is a while is fine, as long as you don't overdo it! Don't go too crazy with the junk food all at once. If you are going out, try to eat healthy for the rest of the day so you can feel better about cheating a little bit when you go out. Maybe look into digestive enzymes to help you whenever you decide to eat out.

Being on a strict anti-acne diet forever is tough no matter how stoic you are.We all indulge sometimes to make us feel better. After all what is life without color? What is life living like a sage? ...My experiences? well. To begin with,i have had many "experiences".I have meticulously observed them and tabulated them in a diary.

1.A high G-I index diet almost always makes my skin bad.(So a big piece of chocolate cake is harakiri for me)

2.I have a penchant for sweet things. So i always end up eating something sweet.According to my observation ,if i consume sugary things in moderation they don't affect me.I recently got this low G-I index blue berry spread by St.Dalfours. I put it on a slice of pumpernickel bread. It was heaven. smile.png. It didn't affect my skin.

3.I doubt if dairy affects my skin at all.Because recently i have started eating a lot of cheese of all kinds (feta, mascarpone, mozarella, blue danish, brie, grana padano, gouda).

Also i love yoghurt so i'm having it like every second day and strangely it's not affecting me at all.

4.I guess it's just milk in it's purest form that affects me.Or maybe dairy doesn't affects me at all! I'll find out by slowly introducing it to my body little by little.

5.Although i'm not an alcohol addict but i do drink sometimes with my friends. And believe me alcohol ALWAYS turns on the acne switch of my body.So even as little as two small pegs of Chivas regal breaks me out.Don't know if it's the de-hydration ... And, beer is even worse.Since it has a lot of carbohydrates in it ,it kills my skin.

As aanabil said. You should never stress about anything. If you eat something unhealthy just enjoy and forget about it.If you constantly think and stress about it,well honestly you're not helping your skin, are you?

P.S-Try to eat low GI index foods. If you have something high GI index, then combine it with ultra low GI index thing,it would average it and you'll do fine wink.png

This is why you should make yourself some treats so you can control the sugar as well as the fat and fiber that lower the impact. And carry fiber capsules with you to take before having something like someone's birthday cake. Although you should really stick to a small piece.

It never occurred to me! Fiber supplements to alleviate the G-I index ! Now i'm gonna have my little capsules to avoid insulin spikes .

Thanks for the suggestion mam :)

could u explain?

Explain what? That fat and fiber slow the metabolism of sugar? That's why high fiber and fat foods have a lower GI. However, no matter how slowly you absorb it, you should not take in more sugar than your cells will take in. Do not sit around and eat/drink sugar. Get up and move around.
