Diet Affects Acne - My Sister Is Living Proof

Basically my sister uses nothing on her skin - she leaves her makeup on every single night, the only thing she does to her face is occasionally wipe it with a wet washcloth some mornings.

But her acne still comes and goes - ive seen it get severe (i mean severe), to now where its clear.

She explained to me how she gave up on topicals a long time ago, because she knows that her diet is the only thing that affects her skin. For her, the main culprits are dairy, eggs, sugary drinks and junk food (mcdonalds etc.)

The things that improve her skin other than avoiding these foods are drinking lots of water, and washing her face with normal bar soap.

She still breaks out, but really inconsistently - whenever she strays from her diet. (when she does break out it gets pretty bad)

She consistently leaves her makeup on when she goes to bed, yet shes clear right now purely down to diet. I'm going to follow in her footsteps (although ill wash my face twice a day and use BP because it helps).

Yeah, at least for her it does. For some people, I think the effect is less noticeable. I do get acne (well, inflamed spots) on my chest when I eat something I am sensitive to. But my face doesn't change.

There is more than one cause of acne, but diet is probably a great place to start

Try to avoid bar soap to wash ur face and use something more gentle. Also use a vitamin rich moisturizer and zinc sunscreen.

yes. diet causes acne for 95% of people. acne is caused by an overproduction of insulin for males. eating refined foods, sugars, and dairy causes free androgens to raise out of control and other problems like acne. acne is really a symtom of problems inside of the body. its bad to ignore it. the best solution is to follow a paleo diet. cut out dairy. cut out grains. cut out refined foods and foods with sugar other than lowglycemic fruit. it is an extremely difficult and nonpleasurable diet that takes a long time to work. i have been on it for 2 months and a half an i am only 95% clear. my skin does not get oily anymore. insulin resistance is developed during teenage years/insulin which explains why acne used to be considered a teenage problem. however, acne is not normal. you do not have to have it. if you change your diet to paleo in about 5 months your acne will clear up and you will probably stop being depressed. acne is internal not external. i am not a physician, just a citizen who has done over 6 months of research to come to this conclusion and then treat myself with success. i have tried so many things but paleo diet is the only thing that has really given me new acne free skin

Hey xxyy, does she break out from fruits and what type of dairy? Would goat milk, goat butter, ghee, or hard cheese break her out?

Researchers are not sure that acne is caused by an "Over production of insulin" the exact cause of acne still remains unclear. Hormones do play a role in acne development but there are also genetic factors at play as well.

Acne is not always a symptom of something wrong/sick/out of whack inside the body as quite a few people experiencing acne have normal circulating androgens and just have androgen sensitive sebaceous glands. Also there are quite a few people who have imbalanced hormones levels that do not experience acne despite this.

The cause of acne is still very complex. Some people improve following a paleo, vegan or dairy free diet and others do not.

well. there is a study from the 1930's where researchers stated how acne was being caused by insulin foods and studies have shown that a low carb high protein diet reduces acne so i think it can pretty much be assumed that a paleo diet will improve most but not all people's acne.

Changing your diet will certainly cure acne for many. For the rest, it may range from significant improvement to moderate improvement, to no improvement at all. My guess is there will always be a minority group of acne sufferers where diet just doesn't help significantly.

I think it's safe to say our bodies are all different. Some people give up one thing (dairy, gluten, etc) and they get clear. Others have to follow a strict diet (low glycemic, non inflammatory). Some people do all of this and still don't get clear.

Acne is very difficult to pinpoint until you get to that moment where you go "a-ha, that's it, this works!". I gave up dairy and all types of other stuff months ago and I still break out. I am still searching for my answer, and for now have come to accept it, even though half the time I want to hide from the world.

It's safe to say one thing: A bad diet will always worsen existing acne and cause new breakouts in acne prone individuals. And a healthy low glycemic anti inflammatory diet is good for our whole bodies, anyways. It should be a goal for everyone, not just those with acne.
