WhiteFox, what do you think of 100% whole grain brown rice? Could it be something that you could eat during the healing process of a leaky gut?
I think that would be one of the best options if you want some type of high-density carbohydrate source in your diet. It's still not optimal though because it does contain a fair amount of antinutrients and also the mentioned carbohydrate load. Good luck!!
Hi Whitefox,
Is honey ok within this plan? Also, since I cut various things out of my diet I rarely get inflamed acne but I still have the non-inflamed stuff and oily skin. Do you think this diet would help clear that?
Honey shouldn't be eaten in excess in the beginning of treatment. The whole point with this plan is to establish healthy gut flora and a functional intestinal barrier (no leaky gut). The most important aspects is to get several sources of probiotics (supplements, fermented foods, minimally washed organic produce etc.) and prebiotics. Diet is also very important, but most people should be able to cheat somewhat on the diet when they have improved the mentioned problems.
The only reason to really avoid honey is that it "might" stimulate the growth of candida etc. in a dysfunctional gut flora.
Nice thread OP, i have no doubt the state of our guts is key to all general health including acne.
Just a few things.
As others have said and often report on here, all probiotics make my skin much worse. By far the worst is home made, proper Sauerkraut. All probioitcs give me large red inflamed spots on my cheeks, it seems the better the quality of the probiotics the worse the acne. The longest i managed to go is about 6 weeks i think but every time it never shows any sign of improving and if anything just gets progressively worse. I realise people say it's the healing process etc but if being healed means going through living hell for months i'd rather not be healed i guess.
Do you think farting is bad?
I tend to produce a lot of gas, which either comes out at the top or the bottom. I can get bloating and acid reflux but these aren't so much of a problem now as i think i have worked out the triggers better, i think then being; stress, bad seating position after eating [slouching etc] and large amounts of potatoes [and other sources of starch sometimes]
Most kinds of veg are the worst triggers of farting for me, then whole grains and legumes.
The worst causes are:
Raw Veg, salad etc - carrots being particular bad.
Sweet potatoes and the skins of any other types of potato.
Beets.
All members of the brassica family [cabbage, broccoli etc].
Basically all sources of prebiotics make me trump like a mofo, i don't have he balls to try chicory, could be brutal!
The weird thing is i don't tend to get both of them at the same time, it's either one or the other, i have been farting badly for a while now [wmds] and i haven't had any bloating or reflux for a while either.
Obviously bloating and reflux are nasty but trumping doesn't bother me except being awkward with other people etc [if anything it is a perversely pleasurable lol].
Hence my question is farting bad and how does it relate to the health of your guts?
Is it a good sign or a sign that something is wrong?
What is your opinion on conditions like Fructose malabsorption etc?
I think these conditions are essentially related to the gut and these people have to avoid probiotics and prebiotics etc as it seems they have too much gut bacteria etc.
One more thing, i am sure there is lots of good information on the http://gutflora.com/ website but does anyone know anything about the site and who runs it etc? It could be a perfectly honest site just trying to help people etc, like the op and other users on this site, but it is my general experience in life that you always have to be careful and question any sources of information regarding our health as most websites are there to make money which can lead to a conflict of interest and bias etc.
I'm not very good with computers but it seems http://gutflora.com/ and another site http://organicfitness.com/ may be run by an Eric Hunter whilst being registered by an Eirik Garnaas. An alarm bell rang when i saw this Eric Hunter has wrote for http://www.naturalnews.com which isn't really a credible source as it is run by con man and charlatan Mike Adams, there is lots of info out there about this guy: http://www.freerepub...n/2386518/posts .
Doesn't mean any of the info on http://gutflora.com/ isn't helpful or correct it's just uneducated people like myself have to be very careful.
Cheers.
Read the thread and you'll find answers to your questions.
I have never said that naturalnews.com is a very good source of information; like all news sources, some of the informaiton is very good while other articles are very bad. And if you had actually read the site or followed NaturalNews.com on facebook you wouldn't be sceptical. Yes, the owner has some opinions that are very "out there", but he's also seems like a great guy that cares about the environment, nature etc. He also routinely posts pics from his own organic farm. Searching online I found that it's the second largest Natural Health website available with OVER 200.000 facebook subscribers!!
And I actually agree with most of the basic ideas on that site: I'm against most vaccinations, I endorse organic foods, against GMOs etc.
Regarding other sites you mention and other sites I have frequently linked to for information:
http://coolinginflam...on.blogspot.no/ - I've been actively following this blog and I often write in the comment section. No products for sale, no advertising etc.
www.gutflora.com - Same here. No product or advertising at all and very good scientifcally based information. Whether the writer is using an alias or if someone else than the writer owns the site I don't know, but why does that even matter, a lot of people write under an alias online or in books, that doesn't mean that the information isn't credible.
www.thepaleodiet.com - Dr. Loren Cordain does sell some books on the Paleo Diet, but he's also done numerous studies on the diet and has worked as a scientist for years
www.marksdailyapple.com - This guy does also sell some stuff, be he also seems to truly believe in the Paleolithic diet and has some great information on his blog.
How bad are sweet potatoes for someone with a bad gut? I can't get on the website at the moment for this particular diet but i know on the gaps diet you have to cut out sweet potatoes. I'm trying to figure out why i am always so bloated, the sweet potatoes are something i have been eating everyday for quite a while now it got me thinking if they are affecting me negatively. In other places i have read they are a safe starch so i'm not sure what to think.
I recently cut them out and am seeing major improvements. I also cut out a few other things that weren't recommended for the gut-healing diet though, so I'm not sure which was the culprit. If I continue to heal, I will try eating sweet potatoes once per week and see what happens.

Thanks, i'll have to cut them out as well and see if i get any improvements.
Ok, I really need to get to the bottom of this. A few weeks ago I had a massive breakout right around the time I was taking a bunch of crazy stuff. I need to know what it was from. Here's how it all went down...
1. I acquired a bad case of poison ivy.
2. Four days into it I started taking Prednisone.
3. A couple days later I started taking antibiotics.
4. A week later (I finished all the Prednisone and most of the antibiotics), I started taking probiotics. At this point my face looked fairly clear, but it was all red so perhaps something was bubbling under the surface.
5. Over the next couple days I got a few more pimples than usual.
6. A few days into the probiotics, I started taking CandiZyme. These are enzymes meant to treat Candida.
7. Either the day after or two days after starting CandiZyme, I woke up with a massive breakout of whiteheads around my nose and forehead.
8. I took Candizyme and probiotics for a couple more days and the breakout got worse.
9. I stopped both the probiotics and the Candizyme.
10. The breakouts stopped. It's been a couple weeks and I'm almost back to "normal".
Would it have been a delayed reaction to the Prednisone, a delayed reaction to the antibiotics, a slightly delayed reaction to the probiotics, or an immediate reaction to the Candizyme? It should be noted that I'm pretty sure I have leaky gut and Candida. Leaky gut could have caused it all to go into my bloodstream and mess me up. Or perhaps it was just doing its job and it was a bad initial breakout, since my system was purging.
I want to go back to the Candizyme but I'm afraid. What do you think?

I am taking a supplement similar to Candizyme. It's just digestive enzymes. Supposedly certain types of enzymes destroy candida cell walls so they die. I have not experienced any sort of reaction.
Honestly I think it's the aftermath of Prednisone. That is stroooong stuff.
http://ibdcrohns.abo...-Cause-Acne.htm
Yes, some people who take steroids such as prednisone can develop "steroid acne."
http://ibdcrohns.abo...-Cause-Acne.htm
I was on Prednisone for about 4 months. I took my last pill right around Jan. 31. Since then I have had terrible acne on my face and I can't seems to get rid of it. Much of it is cystic acne (under the skin) and it hurts.
http://www.hopkinsva...nts/prednisone/
High dose prednisone predisposes some patients to acne, especially facial acne
Since it is a corticosteroid you may have had great skin while on the Pred, but acne outbreaks and other side effects such as hirsutism, weight gain, glucose intolerance, bone thinning, easy bruising, hypertension, and cataracts...are often reported after you go off of it.

If you don't have sweet cravings, candida etc. then sweet potatoes shouldn't be a problem:)
They aren't allowed on the GAPS diet because the GAPS diet is designed for people with severe gut dysbiosis, and since all carbohydrates (not fiber etc.) are converted into glucose in the body they can potentially "feed" the "bad" germs...
Hey whitefox i dont get any on my back or face so much anymore but im getting loads of acne on my legs and groin area! Did you ever get this?
I had severe acne on the upper back, shoulders, chest and face (especially nose and forehead). I also had some red "lesions" on my thighs for a while, but I never knew if it was acne or not.
Strange thing has happened to me lately:
Something that is freaking me out a little lately, which is also kind of cool is that I have started "analyzing" people I meet that have acne. And every time I do this I see the signs of chronic low-level inflammation, dysfunctional gut flora, leaky gut etc. I don't really know how to explain it, there are just the small signs like coated tongue, possibly bad breath and "the general look".
This only started to happen the last couple of months since I have become very good at recognizing the signs since it is several years since I started looking into the candida, gut dysbiosis etc. thing.
Also, when I see someone eating for example sugary foods I get these visual images in my head where I actually see how their diet disrupts their gut flora, promote leaky gut, inflammation etc.
It's freakin me out, and I'm actually beginning to look at people with poor diet/lifestyle as "sick".
That has been happening to me for a long time now. Sometimes it's really bad. When I fast, I often get this super strong sense of smell, and once during a juice fast I had to go to wal mart to get more lemons and stuff. While I was there I got so sick because everyone in there was just... ugh. I could smell the gluten breaking down in their sickly intestines, I could smell the toxins on their sweat, it was just horrible. I never went to wal mart while fasting again!

It makes me realize how fucked up the human race really is. We have drifted so far away from our natural living conditions and we're becoming sick and obese.

It's like the movie the sixth sense, except you can know whats happening in people bowels.
I was just thinking about this yesterday while watching that show "The Great Food Truck Race." The food trucks were getting set up to sell and there were all these people hovering around the chicken and waffles truck, waiting for them to begin serving. All of them were obese. Like seriously, almost all of them looked really obese and unhealthy. Even worse, the guys who were running the food truck were seriously obese, one of them really bad.
I just question if they ever feel bad about the way they look and their health, and if they ever connect it to the fact that they are eating fried foods and processed grains all of the time.
I dunno, it's just kind of sad.

Here's an interesting study on the use of spirulina as a prebiotic. It can, supposedly, stimulate the growth of lactic acid bacteria, so I imagine you would have to be ingesting probiotics from a dairy source for this particular mechanism to take effect, but it's not outside the realm of possibility that spirulina could also encourage growth of other friendly, fun-loving bacteria.
Hey guys this is my first time ever posting on acne.org. I have cleared my cystic acne that was moderately severe a year ago through dietary changes. I still feel though as if I could make an improvement some how cause after elimentating grains and cow dairy (besides cream, butter ect.), and low carb (around 80-90 grams a day), I am 95 percent clear and no cysts since a year but I have this issue with what seems to be a moderate case of dermatitis. I didn't have this before and just maybe if I add more carbs I could fix this, problem is I don't kno the line between cystic acne and regular acne when it comes to carb intake and I really want to up my carb intake just a bit by healing my gut once and for all. Here is the thing though, I used to have cystic acne and I have read many times that probiotics can trigger cysts when begging. Cysts leave PERMANENT scars so it's a lose lose for me. Can someone help me?
Wow! I feel really convinced that my acne is caused by my gut. I read somewhere that 30% of people with an unhealthy gut don't show any symptoms. I'm pretty sure I'm part of that 30%.
Do you have any recipes that you could recommend? So far I've just been eating salad, kimchi, chicken, fish, eggs, and brown rice and I need some more variety in my meals. (I've been cheating a bit, but starting from today, I'm going to be strict about my sugar intake and dairy intake.) Do you think the gut diet will help me even if I'm 16 years old? Also, will this help heal redmarks/post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation?
Thank you so much for this thread!
