I havent really posted for a while as nothing is changing I still have the acne I have had for 2 years now. well im 20 in a week so since very late 18 years old. very hormonal meaning definitely 2-1 weeks before the period. but always all month as well. I wont go into things as Im sure people know as ive mentioned i have tried every natural from bone broths, kefir, the obvious diet used on the forum here to all types of herbs and approaches. Nothing has made a different literally not even vitamins or my juiced veggies etc etc. Im scared to know if diane is keeping the worst away because i stil lcant go outside in public.
I do exercise everday, i have never used chemicals on my face i live in a chemical free area (country) i havnt had dairy in years etc etc. I sleep well I mean for real there is no point going into the details becuase im following everything perfectly but still my acne has not changed one bit over the past year.
I'm now forced to go back on spiro which i dont want because im scared it will stop working, wont work again or the reality is that i cant even obtain it. but thats where im at and im really upset the natural route has not worked for me i dont understand considering everyone here says its the reasons and the treatment.
How is it possible my hormones have changed in a way they are IMPOSSIBLE to change back? this happened so all of a sudden.
and now i seriously will never see a light at the end of the tunnel. thats impossible because ive tried everything i can. i havent even taken antibiotics or acne meds ever just spiro.
so yeah..
any advice on what might be going on? I actually think i'll never get a boyfriend and i'll never have a baby by choice because im too scared of the acne that will occur once off birth control and spiro for real its that depressing.
I still doing understand how i can be an indentical twin and this gene skip my sister completely it makes no sense considering we're one of the most identical twins out there i swear in every which way.
i might also add its getting worse. now im getting LARGE bumps on my forehead before my period. I dont even know if theyre cysts they just like large bumps they feel like somethings living underneath it with the area it takes up and theres nothing in them no pus or anything. just like blood. this is a new formation on top of the rest -_- I dont think ive ever had a clear forehead.
does anyone have any advice for me? I never wanted to go back on spiro and i cant believe not one natural thing has even changed anything in the slightest. if the diet and acne connection is so true how come nothing has even affected me in anyway? i dont even feel different.
So sorry you are having such a rough time. You are still very young so hopefully hormones will stabilize and you'll outgrow this. It must be so frustrating to be dealing with this when your twin isn't...so unfair! But that's how the body works...we are all individuals and it may be that either you have smaller pores, your skin sheds more frequently, or your skin is prone to clumping or you excrete more sebum...lots of variables. Too many to figure out. But you can do some more things to help your skin. Don't worry about spiro...it is very mild and does help. Wash with a benzoyl peroxide cleanser...less irritating than the creams. Can you see a derm? Diet helps but doesn't usually solve the problem. In truth I think that is the case for most people eventho it appears like everyone is being cured. It may help solve the problem for people with really mild cases or food allergies as the root of their acne. For most of us our acne is caused by the things I mentioned above...actual functional problems with skin and how it works. This is why cleansers and topicals can help...and oral meds too when needed. See my regime below and see if you can do any of those things. Sometimes it takes doing several things at the same time...cleanser, topical + oral medication...to get things under control.
You should see a derm to get this figured out and then follow what they say so they can evaluate what is working and not working.
What/where is a "chemical-free" country? Never heard of this!

No. And no it's not.
FSAS, have you ever supplemented with N-acetylglucosamine?

thankyou for your reply, i really appreciate it. really.
i have yet to see a derm because i know they will put me on oral meds and despite how much i hate this acne and my life i dont want to be told to take oral meds because i know once you stop the acne will come back and in the mean time compormising your system.
i have tried spot treatment with BP im not sure if it helps but i had a HUGE lump on my forehead the past few days (right before my period) it was a about 2 cm wide and drowned it in BP i didnt know what else to do. im so frustrated diet still cant help because i dont udnerstand why all of a sudden i've got acne like ive never had it as a teen every but late 18 it all of a sudden went INSANE in about 4 weeks and thats when i jumped onto diane and spiro at once . still on diane -_-
but in saying that, thats the part i dont understand..how it can just switch on like that by doing nothing and then be imposible to stop. i wish someone could help me with that question. like why now. and why so suddenly.
as for my twin she had acne for about 2-3 years but when she WAS a teen like 16-18 around year 8-10 of her life whilst i remained very clear but she so did not have it as bad as myself no where near. but im not sure what that means like why she got it then, then grew out of it and now im getting it..doesnt make sense because does that mean i have the 'adult 'version of acne and therefore will never grow out of it? i dont know. i have switched BCP a few times but still never had any issue with skin whatsoever. i think maybe diane is keeping my sister clear definitely not me.
how is it diet can 'treat' people like with heart diesease etc like all those stories of natural things helping such big issues but then it cant help my body fix itself whatever is malfunctioning?
anyways sorry. ive just been in the dark with this for so so long now. last night was hell.
thanks for your input though.
also i meant that i live 'in a country area' haha meaning so very very far from toxins in the air in the sense of the city etc. the most fresh air, food, water you name it so i find it difficult to factor too much into my acne like toxins and i dont even use really chemical shampoos or soaps or anything, water is filtered, no one smokes around here i dont drink (anymore) and again i only drink water dont ingest chemicals like antibiotics (only spiro ...now sadly) and never have used anything but natural things on my skin (except for small amounts of bp) so yeah. my acne is very hormonal realted around my cycle. its so frustrating because i honestly never want to come off the pill based on the fact of knowing if my face is like this now on the pill praised for good looking skin and then on spiro and doing all im doing god help me when im off it all. anyway im rambleing now sorry!

No i dont believe i have, i have heard of it many times but after about a year on all sorts of supplements i definitely just stoped because nothing seemed to make a slight difference all the usuals like naicin, vitamin C,E, krill oil, B5, cod liver...actually i think i have tried so many at different intervals i dont remember most. also tried saw palmetto for about 2 months and noticed nothing. so i guess my faith in supplements is non-existant. even strong probiotics etc.
what is it that N-acetylglucosamine does if you could please help me out on a bit of info?
thanks

did you expect them to be magic pills that 'cured' you? Because they can't, except perhaps in mega doses like with the B5 and you can't keep that up. But most of those are very beneficial for several reasons.
so yeah. my acne is very hormonal realted around my cycle.
Then did you look into things to improve estrogen/progesterone balance?

I figured supplments were worth a shot as so many people have said they helped but i guess theyre not really if you would need to take crazy amounts of it. I never expected any supplement to work as my diet didnt change anything either and i was eating crazy amounts of veggies etc trying to get the vitamins naturally. Which is why I dont really get the diet/acne connection if one doesnt have allergies then you kinda run out of options.
The most i've gone down with estrogen/progesterone is using herbs my old nutritionist (dont see him anymore due to the doubts with everything) but none of those liquid herbs made a difference. When i mentioned progesterone to a few people like docs/nutritionist they said said to not 'mess with hormones' (yet they'll freely give me birth control at a young age with no knowledge of what it can do).
I'm not sure of my estrogen/progesterone levels, im not willing to go off birth control to test beacause im not ready to handle what will happen. plus i've heard those tests often dont matter much because they can come up normal for people just like me too so im not sure its worth the test.
I'm a little annoyed diane doesnt help but i guess im just lost with what my hormones are doing as i dont understand how things are so sensitive now and why they wont normalize themselves after 2 years. I think thats my biggest question is why all of a sudden now i get acne along with my fluctuating hormones yet never did before. considering i never got acne at 16-18, why at 20, doesnt make much sense you would think i would have got it when i hit those normal ages to get it...
thanks for your input

also just quickly wanted to mention. about 2 nights ago my face had like 100s of pimples with some big decent ones and that one big monster no my forehead and now (first day of my period) my face is clear and im not kidding just a few red marks from the drama past. smooth, no bumps no nothing. even that big monster has gone down very considerably. How is it possible to literally go from one extreme to the other and im talking extreme extreme in only 24-30 hours? I thought firstly, that acne takes days to form and whatnot. I have no other hormonal related symptoms at all and never had (aka cramps heavy periods mood swings) except this face problem.. but the extreme is truly extreme and i suppose i dont understand that most how its like an off and on switch? can acne even form into one big mess and dispear overnight? that cant be 'true' acne where bacteria etc is concnered. definitely not diet. i think it this sucks the most because i honestly feel like nothing will affect it as its perfect clockwork. I have about a week and a bit of this clear face before things start popping up again :/

I wouldn't suggest you try adding progesterone, not yet anyway. But there are many things you can do to improve your body's ability to manage hormones, removes excess estrogen, etc. supporting your liver and adrenal health for example. http://www.acne.org/messageboard/index.php/topic/230714-good-things-for-acne-cliff-notes-to-clear-skin-health/
And I don't remember anymore, but isn't Diane the BC that has the ingredient that works pretty much the same as Spiro?
Have you tried cutting all sugar and taking antifungals like coconut oil? Taking probiotics? You could also try cutting all gluten and seeing if that makes a difference. Diet does make a huge difference it's just hard finding specifically what makes the difference for you and why. Candida, leaky gut and gluten intolerance are all things you could look into if you haven't already. I know it is frustrating when nothing seems to work but there is an answer for you out there, you just have to keep searching for it.
How is your digestion? Do you have stomach issues?
Also, have you had your hormones tested to find out specifically what the imbalance is? Because if you know what that is it will help you to take the right herbs to correct that specific imbalance.

okay, yes thats what i was think.
I've stopped drinking from water bottles for months now and i also dont consume soy at all, i sleep very weel also. I was on liquid herbs that were directed for my liver /digestion for a few months but i noticed nothing, i have no noticable digestive issues at all. never really have, no discomfort ever etc. i had my liver tested and it came back perfect but i again was focusing on my liver with herbs definitely milk thistle and also lots of water and quit drinking like a year ago so not sure whats going on there, i almost wish i had something more obviously wrong with me so i knew where to start.
I think diane has some sort of antiandrogen in it im not sure. im really upset it hasnt worked for me nearly my 2nd year on it. im so scared to ever go off it. as mentioned i started back on 25mg of spiro about 2 weeks ago but i have little hope in it. also considering when i did start spiro when i started diane i had the typical spiro symptoms for example the fast heart rate and twitches and going to the toilet often. that went on for the first 2-3 weeks and things went good from there on at a small dose. its been 2 weeks and i havent even noticed a need to urinate more and definitely no irregualar heartbeat so perhaps it wont work for me again the second time round.
to be perfectly honest im annoying because i dont get symotoms from anything. any meds any foods everything. yet i must have something wrong (or just horrible genes) but as nothing seems to affect me in any which way positive or negative (honestly everything i put in my body whether it a supplment or med or food or drink). I feel very neutral like nothing will help me due to not even having any sideeffects. like sleep might not be aiding me as much as im hoping or the sunlight. okay im rambling but i think you get what i was saying sorry about that ha.

yes i rarely ate sugars to begin with. i havent had proccessed foods for a very long time (even when i was younger, i havent had soda or anything like that for about 6 years). I use coconut oil all the time. and Ive been using strong pill probiotics for about 11months and water kefir for about 4-5. didnt notice a change however. ive tried cutting out gluten also. then the doc basically yelled at me when i mentioned it and made me take a blood test to prove i wasnt gluten intolerate - which i wasnt. but i understand gluten is bad for everyone..but again didnt notice any differences. Ive taken herbs for a while and focused on leaky gut and digestion but nothing different there so we ruled out leaky gut. i have no noticable digestion issues at all, no bloating or discomfort or issues going to the toilet. I havent had my hormones tested because Im legit scared to get off diane and i was hoping to figure out my imbalance based on the times my acne appears and goes. but in saying that i have tried various herbs and whatnot including saw palmetto and again didnt notice anything :/ im more curious why my hormones are 'spilling' over to the point of acne all of a sudden. after 20 years. so yeah i dunno whats going on -_-
Hmm, maybe the problem lies within your liver then? If you have no direct cause maybe your liver is simply overburdened and can't eliminate the excess hormones?
You are doing alot of great things for digestion and you sound really healthy so I don't think the problem lies there. But note that I had a gluten test as well and it came back negative, but my skin definitely reacts strongly to gluten.
I would suggest seeing an endocrinologist and looking at your hormones. Maybe you have something like pcos or a thyroid problem or an imbalance? You could also take herbal teas or supplements to help cleanse your liver because it might at least help the problem.

ive tried a variety of things to aid the liver like herbs as mentioned and the teas for a few months and acne was still very persitant.
as mentioned i dont really want to come off the pill now as i doubt i'll be able to cope with the emotions knowing the acne will most likely get worse. im not sure if i have pcos , im really kinda scared of that :/ i heard it runs in the family and no one in my family has it but i know that doesnt mean i cant get it. i read even the pcos tests arent thats great then again there isnt a treatment for pcos? just diet and birth control? kinda what im already doing :/
im quite skinny too and i read peopel who are skinny and have pcos have a much harder time getting things under control.
so yeah im not too sure what to do. can pcos just appear at anytime, would it appear once you hit puberty also?
If I were you I wouldn't go off the pill at this time because like you said, for many people their skin gets worse while their hormones readjust. I don't know too much about the hormone side of acne because for myself it is diet/digestion related but if you have health care I would make an appointment with a doctor and get a referral to an endocrinologist. You doctor can test you for pcos through a simple blood test but maybe ask to have all of your hormones tested so you can find out if there is a problem there. Explain to them your situation and I'm sure they will test you. If there is a problem you can fix it naturally or through medication (like specific birth control, Spiro etc.) I just think knowing the root cause of your skin problems makes them a lot easier to tackle because you know what approach to take. Just my advice, I know it's hard trying to figure it all out but you will find your answers if you keep looking. Take care!
Hey FSAS, what's your body temp like? Are your hands and feet cold usually?
not too noticablly. in saying that it has been a bit cold lately and my feet usually get quite cold, I think often my hands are cold too. Its definitely not something I've really thought on to notice. Why do you ask im curious?

So they are cold usually?
Well I ask because I've been reading a lot about how the thyroid can affect acne as well as how it regulates hormones and I'm thinking that maybe you might want to do things to help regulate your thyroid. Your body temp is telling of your metabolic rate and the status of your thyroid. If your limbs are usually cold, blood is not circulating throughout your body. Your thyroid also produces hormones that deal with the shedding of your skin cells.
My hands and feet were always cold as long as I can remember in the winter time. I thought it was just because the weather was so cold and I'm just skinny. Nope. My thyroid has not been functioning optimally for a long time. Now, when I eat the right way, my body can warm up so that my hands and feet are just as warm as the rest of my body. My acne clears up quickly when I eat things to get my thyroid going and I eat things with vitamin A.
See, on the orthodox paleo diet (most people on acne.org will just eat meat and vegetables out of fear of sugar) I was always cold. It didn't warm me up, but I didn't think it was that important to my health, and I still thought it was just because I didn't eat enough. A diet of just meat and vegetables is not really a pro-thyroid diet. It's a step up from SAD, but it has got its own issues.

Not sweating much is another symptom that I have. Hyperthyroid people sweat a lot. And yeah, you need carbs to fuel thyroid. That's why many weightloss people recommend altering low carb with not high, but more carb days. Or a splurge day. The idea is that you boost thyroid and therefore metabolism on the carb days, then burn the calories on the low carb days. http://www.acne.org/messageboard/index.php/topic/230714-good-things-for-the-many-factors-that-lead-to-acne/page__view__findpost__p__2592507

Thats a good place to start.
thanks for the link i just read up.
its really hard to tell with me. like even now my hands and feet are really warm so i wonder if my body temp is fine and when im cold perhaps its just a direct result of the freezing temperature on my skin but yeah. in fact my hands are overwarm almost hot now for no apparent reason.
I used to drink my own carrot juice everyday, about 5-6 carrots worth, i did that for a while but the only difference in me was the colour of my hands turned much darker. didnt seem to affect my acne but i'll get back onto the vitamin A. i find carrot juice repuslive so hopefully i'll be alright in not throwing it up
I read somewhere that acne is a capricious disease...it comes and goes for its own reasons and often doesn't make sense at all.
hm :/ as in someone whos diet affected their acne...perhaps one day they'll be able to eat all the foods that couldnt eat before because their acne just decided to go away and therefore nothing affects them and makes them breakout?

Well they don't have to be cold all the time, but a lot of the time. If they're getting cold because the room is freezing, that means your body is restricting blood flow to your limbs and possibly the skin on your face. All my friends are usually warm despite the weather conditions (unless it is absolutely freezing outside). They're like furnaces. So unless it is really really cold, I believe you should generally be warm. But body temperature is not the only indication of a low-functioning thyroid.
Also, I would advise eating liver for vitamin A instead of beta carotenes. I'm not sure how effective the conversion is, especially if you're nutrient depleted. You could try carrots, but if that doesn't help, try eating liver in small amounts once or twice a week. Try to do things to keep your thyroid function up as well.
Hmm..this is really interesting. I am a cold person. lol Unless it is really hot outside..but I am very sensitive to temp changes it seems. I get cold/uncomfortable below 80. yesterday, we were eating out and I was absolutely freezing-- shivering. I had on a shirt and a sweater so I should have been comfortable. My husdband and son--both in single shirts were fine. Everyone always comments on my cold hands when we shake or clasp. When I take my temp it is always 97.6 Hmm this is something to think about. I drink ginger tea which helps warm me up and I love pumpkins. I also love liver. I had read about the beta carotene because I ate a lot of pumpkin yesterday and feared ODing on the Vit A (it also zinc I believe). However, it said that if you eat large quantities from food sources (as in beta carotene) that you can't OD as your body has to convert it and will only convert what it needs. But, the excess can be seen in yellowing or orange tinted skin which will go away once you stop eating the foods. Can't say I have noticed any immediate difference, but when I woke up this morning my face was blissfully dry (it is usually quite the oil slick lol). Thanks for your link and input!!

You should really look at the symptoms of low progesterone.
I'm curious.
Many seem to highlight that they do not eat dairy as they believe it to contribute to their acne.
However Gluten is also contributes to acne. Have you considered cutting this out to see if you get any benefits from this?
As for your hormones. There could be many thinks causing an imbalance.
Sugary foods is on top of that list. Sugar disrupts insulin, which can disrupt Grelin, Leptin, Thyroid and so on.
When large amounts of sugar is consumed it can literately take up to 4 days for hormones to stablise and for the insulin to beat down the sugar and process it.
Put this process into place over say 15 to 17 years where most kids in western society live on chocolate and candy. That is a lot of hormonal and metabolic damage going on. It can take up to a year to stablise the metabolism and insulin sensitivity.
Then there is, are you actually looking in the right area in regards to your sensitively? It could be 1 in a 100 things. Then there is the debate of is acne actually diet related or is just genetic?
Many questions to be answered. Fact is we don't know what causes acne hence there is no concrete solution to it

Hi! Thank you. I will check it out!!
Hi FSAS,
I think you should look into pcos more. I have been diagnosed with a polycystic ovary and although I don't have all the signs of the syndrome I am treating myself as if I have it. Apparently 85% of women over age of 20 with acne have some form of pcos.
You break out at the same time as I do - breaking out at that time appears to be a sign of not ovulating/body trying to ovulate.
Beacuse of your age I recommend you stay with Spiro and use an alternative non-oral birth control. In my experience Drs will hand out the pill without thinking of the issues a woman may have with hormones. For example I used Dianette for years and was always told it was the 'strongest' for reducing acne because of the anti-androgen in it. When I had been on this for too long my Dr told me to swap over to Yasmin, a weaker pill. My skin was amazing on Yasmin, far better than on Dianette. It got me thinking about the possible hormonal imbalances I have and how the pill could have been making it worse.
I'm pretty sure I have read that oral contraceptives can increase insulin resistance which you wouldn't want to do given you have acne.
I can remember being your age and being distressed about appearing unattractive to people. I think you should use what works; it will clear your skin up, you can relax and get on with other parts of your life and you can continue to research this but at a more leisurely pace without it dominating your free time.
