I have a friend that's allergic to soy and he was eating an apple pie from McDonalds, and I told him that it contained soy lecithin, and he said it's ok because the allergy is derived from the soybean oil, whereas the allergy itself relates to the soy protein..

Does the same go for us that are trying to avoid soy foods because of acne? I've been trying to avoid soy, but I eat foods with soy lecithins because almost everything is made with it.

You need to avoid all soy if you are avoiding it in the first place. Otherwise, it's pointless. It's not true what your friend said. It isn't only the soy protein, it's any soy.

You're right it is in almost everything. Have fun trying to avoid it. If soy lecithin is really a problem then almost everyone is screwed.

One of the paleo idols, Mark Sissons [Mark's Daily Apple] sells a glorified whey protein product which i remember reading contains soy lecithin, as with almost all whey powders. Whats strange is i can't find any mention of it now but also now denials of it including it either, maybe he has just wiped all talk of it off the internet.

Make of this what you will

I pretty much managed to keep away from it, and now I eat really healthy considering almost all processed stuff includes it.

I don't stress it if it's only in tiny amounts, as say an emulsifier in chocolate. I've heard the oil is safe for those with an allergy too.

If you're eating a good diet with mostly fresh food, a lil lecithin probably won't hurt you once in a while.

Just to clarify, I believe that all forms of soy are high in phytoestrogens which mess with our hormones. Phytoestrogens can act like estrogen and increase prolactin in the body, decrease progesterone. Phytoestrogens are especially worse for guys. I am a male and I break out alot from soy and flax both which are very high in phytoestrogens. I think females may actually benefit from phytoestrogen as I have seen some women clear up from consuming flax. For those who are allergic to soy, I believe there may be a different mechanism affecting them. It may not be hormonal and this may be why they can successfully consume soybean oil and soy lecithin without a reaction but certain acne sufferers can't.
