It's fall again. There should be a new crop of nuts and such appearing in supermarkets and farmers markets. Stock up and store in the freezer. Watch for sales. Soon they will be on sale for the holidays.
Also, my supermarkets have pomegranites! Yeah, I know. It's way early. And they are from Texas even, not imported from another hemisphere. I bought a couple at $1.50 each which is nearly as cheap as I've ever seen them.
Woo, Pomegranates! I look forward to them being at my local co-op soon. I always stock up on organic frozen goods that are on sale, specifically fruits and veggies. You can get a 10 ounce bag of organic brocolli heads and spinnach for $1.20-$1.50ish, and frozen fruits for $2.00-$2.50ish. They'll occasionally have frozen grass fed beef on sale as well for around $5 a lb.
Some restaurants and fishmongers are starting to sell the bycatch. These would be the fish caught in the nets that the commercial fisherman weren't looking for. Usually they are dumped, commercial fishing being one of the most destructive wasteful components of the food industry. (Traditionally they would have been eaten by the fishermen and their families which is why there are so many soups made of assorted seafood throughout the world--gumbo, boulliabase, etc.)
I haven't tried it as the only places I've read about that do it are restaurant/fishmongers not really near me. But you might try doing a search for places in your area, especially if you live along a coast.
Its fall again. Buy your nuts now and store in freezer. Especially shelled nuts. Especially walnuts and brazil nuts and anything else especially prone to going rancid.
They should be on sale soon for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Also, stock up on your cranberries, but they'll probably still have these on sale through New Years.
Oh, and it's pomegranite season again!!!
