Going to give this a try -

NOW Foods Niacin/Inositol combo -

Quick questions, maybe someone can help. These caps are 250mg each. Is it better to take one am and one pm or get the full 500mg at once? Also, the bottle says take it with meals. Is that right or is empty stomach better?

Also on a tangent, has anyone taking this noticed any difference in hair quality or growth rate?

thanks!

Just received my NOW foods Niacin. Same as yours. It's better to take both at once and a b complex will with them after a meal.

Well I've been taking Niacin on the "No Sugar" diet and it helped for a couple of days and then just stopped working, but here's the odd thing. I rarely ever drank milk in the past, but started recently and I'm not sure if it's the milk or a combination of milk and Niacin, but I've been clearing up and drying out rapidly.

I'm thinking my body was not getting enough fat in my diet and milk is providing that which in turn is triggering the Niacin to work. I don't know.

Anyone here big milk drinkers and also taking Niacin?

I took my first niacin capsule 10 minutes ago and a b complex tablet. I just noticed that my niacin says "DOUBLE STRENGTH" on it (500mg).

Hi guys,

I just started this last night. I went to both CVS and Walgreens (they are right next to each other) and both places only had no-flush niacin. The cheapest I found was $10. Then went to WholeFoods to pick up some groceries and found that they have Niacin Flush 300mg for only 4.99. Great deal.

I took one after dinner and was anticipating the aoeflusha but it really wasnat that bad AT ALL. The only sensation I got was an itchy feeling in my ears and that went away after about 10-15 minutes. My arms, upper chest, and upper back got splotchy red and it lasted for about 45 mins....that was it. I did notice this morning that my some of the spots on my forehead had really decreased in size and already starting clearing up. The acne that I do get is very mild and mainly due to really oily skin which I think Niacin can control. Excited to see results after 2 weeks.

Strato - please keep us updated on your progress with the NOW brand as I will be taking the same one (although I bought the 250mg so I will take 2 instead of 1).

I am wondering what Niacin is doing to my body regarding my hyperthyroidism. Maybe it's not such a good idea to take it as my metabolism is already quite high?

I've been taking niacin 500mg flush free for about a week now and no new breakouts yet :)

update. 2nd day

Took it for the second time last night after a big dinner and this time it was strange. I felt nothing at all for about 2 1/2 hours after i took it. (These are not the FLUSH FREE) I pretty much gave up on expecting anything to happen when all of the sudden the flushing began. This time it was SUPER intense. Felt like my whole body was burning similar to a bad sunburn but my face was burning the most. I got kind of worried and then as fast as it came it was gone.

1st Q. Has anyone experienced a delay in the effects longer than 2 hours or so from taking niacin? These are not time release or Flush free.

2nd Q. How long should i wait to shave my face before or after taking niacin?

ps. i must say though that my skin does look a lot better and is clearing up fast.

I'm worried about this too. I'm stick thin and desperately trying to gain weight and hopefully niacin won't be a problem. =/

I started taking 500mg of inositol hexaniacinate (flush free kind) at dinner two days ago (Monday) and nothing drastic has happened. There isn't much for inflammation at the moment, but red marks galore. I did break out on Sunday in some nice large papules but they've since mostly gone down/gone kablooie. I got a couple new papules last night one of which became a'splodable this afternoon the other is hardly even there.

I will probably post updates if any progress is made.

I understand that niacin is a form of Vitamin B3.

If I take Vitamin B3 tablets, will that have the same effect?

Ok, so I've been taking this from late July to about mid-september. I've stopped completely, and my face is BETTER off than it was, but it's no cure for me. I've found consistent exercise, moderation of bad foods, and sleep to me the most effective part. I am grateful I tried niacin and all it's varieties, heh.

I decided to give this a try, since I already have B-complex in my vitamin arsenal. I bought 500mg flush-free niacin (inositol hexanicotinate). I choose the flush free since I'd rather go the safe-way first before I would try the actual flush kind. I let you know how it goes in a week or two.

I have some questions for everyone.

1. If I'm going to use the no flush kind, can I just start out with 500 mg? Or should I start with 250 mg for a little while first?

2. Should I take a pill once or twice per day?

3. Should I take it while eating or on an empty stomach?

4. Should I take it with my other vitamins, or by itself?

Sorry for all the questions but I would really like help, also thanks in advance.

I had thought about taking it before, but I've already generally cured my acne with other things. What I'm wondering is does anyone think it would help with red marks?

640 mg no flush niacin didn't do anything for me. Kinda weird that no supplement works for me... I have overdoes B5, B3 (niacin), zinc, vitamin A, taurine and some others. No effect what so ever.

I just got my flush-free 500 mg today. Sadly I also was told I probably have H191 also, so I am holding off to try it until I am healthy.

640mg isnt close to an overdose for niacin.

It's still an overdose considering 100mg or less is daily a "safe" dose. Asked a nutritionist.

An interesting read, here nicotinamide 750mg is used.

Formulation: Nicomide (Nic/Zn)

Nicotinamide 750mg, Zinc 25mg, Copper 1.5mg, Folic Acid 500 micrograms

The Nicomide Improvement in Clinical Outcomes Study (NICOS): results of an 8-week trial.

Niren NM, Torok HM

The Nicomide Improvement in Clinical Outcomes Study (NICOS) was an open-label, multicenter, prospective cohort study designed to assess the clinical utility of oral pharmacologic doses of nicotinamide and zinc in 198 patients with acne vulgaris and/or rosacea. The study's primary efficacy measures were patient global evaluation and patient evaluation of the percentage of reduction in inflammatory lesions after 4 and 8 weeks of treatment; overall patient satisfaction also was recorded. The study formulation consisted of nicotinamide 750 mg, zinc 25 mg, copper 1.5 mg, and folic acid 500 microg, marketed as Nicomide (Nic/Zn). Nic/Zn was designed to deliver adequate concentrations of nicotinamide and zinc to effectively treat inflammatory cutaneous conditions with a safety profile suitable for long-term administration. After a relatively short treatment period of 4 weeks, the number of patients enrolled in NICOS who reported improvement was significantly greater (P<.0001) than the number who reported either no change in or worsening of their condition. Of the patients studied, 79% reported their improvement in appearance as moderately better or much better, as measured by patient global evaluation, and 55% reported moderate (26%-50% reduction in lesions) or substantial (>50% reduction in lesions) improvement after 4 weeks of treatment (P<.0001). The percentage of patients who responded to therapy continued to increase through the 8 weeks of treatment. When comparing patients who received concomitant oral antibiotic therapy (51/198, 26%) with those who received Nic/Zn tablets as their only oral therapy (147/198, 74%), the percentage of patients who responded to treatment was not significantly different between treatment groups (P=. 13). This finding was particularly interesting given that most patients studied considered their condition to be of at least moderate severity (143/198, 72%). It appears that the addition of an oral antibiotic to a treatment regimen that includes Nic/Zn tablets may not be necessary because the combination did not significantly increase the percentage of patients responding. Nic/Zn tablets appear to be an effective oral therapy for the treatment of acne vulgaris and rosacea when used alone or with other topical therapies and should be considered a useful alternative approach to oral antibiotics for the treatment of acne vulgaris and rosacea.

Yes. Use it topically. Look into Olay or Paula's Choice products or mix a capsule with aloe vera.

I've been taking the flush kind for a few days now and well I don't flush, at all. There is no tingling, getting warm, or redness. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm taking natures way, Nicotinic Acid 100mg. I've actually been breaking out a little bit more, just one or two more pimples. But still, I wonder if its because of niacin, or possibly because I was overstressed from mid-terms. I'm gonna keep on it for about 2 more weeks, and see how it works.
