Okay pam_B, please keep us update with your skin & hair issues. I do hope that the side effects you're experiencing will soon wear off completely. BTW, I heard that biotin helps with the hair problem due to B5. May do a little research on that..
How many b-complex pills should I take a day if im taking about 15 pills of b5?
thanks pam_B for the reply. I dont plan on stopping anytime soon because this is the only thing that helps control my acne. I want to in the future. im still taking 8 grams a day and havent seen any signs of hair loss and my skin is not that dry. I think food has a lot to do with me breaking out.
Hello all, I have been following this board for several years and have never posted here until tonight. I have tried many different things with no luck to control my acne. I am 39 years old, have had acne since age 13. I have not let it stop me from living and I am married with 3 kids. I have only been clear once 15 years ago when on retinA and antibiotics daily for a year, then I got pregnant and after my kids were born they no longer worked. Still, acne has always been a source of embarrassment for me and I am the only one of my friends with this problem. I wear make up everyday and have a shiny face 2 hours after I apply it no matter what kind or brand.I have cysts and lots of scarring left over from the years I have suffered. I stress about it everyday.
I have wanted to say I started the B5 2 weeks ago. I am trying 5-6 grams of the B5 a day, and 1 B-complex when I remember. So, far I have noticed a a slight decrease in oil and my huge pores are shrinking. I have had less breakout and they are not lasting as long. This is a pretty big deal for me, because I always have several cysts at least at one time. In all of the medications and natural remedies I have tried, this one is actually giving me a noticeable result early on and that is a first. This thread is what made me start it and thanks you for that. Please follow up on your posts, I need to hear encouraging results. I bought the first bottle at GNC for $11, just got a bottle at Whole Foods for about $14(has 90 pills instead of 60) I am commited to staying on it for at least 4 months , so I will post results. It is so frustrating rwhen people drop away and you don't know how they are doing now. Good luck to all of you,may you all find your cure!
When I found this thread I was completly optimistic. Im 45 and have had acne since I was 13, went on Accutane at 19 and again at 27.I even had laser skin resurfacing at 40, which I do not reccomend as my face is worse than ever and has never recovered. Anyway, I have been on the B-5 2 months.I followed it to the letter. At first I did get a initial breakout and I thought ok, nothing new. Then my skin started to get dry so I changed my acne regiman to non drying toner and cleanser and kept breaking out with dry skin. Then I started getting cysts in places I never have before and I was hoping my face was just purging. Then, ( and this is bad) my vision started to get blurry when I was on the computer or trying to read. Then it got so bad that I couldnt drive at night so I lowered the dosage. My hair was coming out pretty bad as well.My vision is still blurry but off and on, I tried visine tears thinking it was due to dry eyes with no luck. So now I'm taking only 5 at morning and bedtime, my acne is no better at all. To say I'm heartbroken is a understatement.
I am so sorry Carina, are you going to stick it out for a few more months to see if it will take longer? I truly feel for you, suffering for decades and trying one "cure" after another with no results is heartbreaking and we really cannot share it with our clear skinned spouses and friends because they have no idea how deeply it effects you.I have read many say 4-6 months may be needed for b-5 full effects. I have has major reservations about taking 10g, and the one post by someone older said he took a lower dose and it took longer but it finally worked and he has been on it for years.(I wish he would add more, but he is what made me go with the lower dose)
I really feel like the high dose is too much and the blurry vision and night driving would probably make me stop. That is why I haven't done accutane, because I already don't have great night vision and don't feel its worth it to have no night vision.
To the earlier post for the cheap link, that deal may seem ok, but remember 100g is potentially still only 5-10 days worth (naturally varying how much you take). I used to buy it by the 1000, still have a 1000 or so somewhere!
For those who wanted an update from someone who used to use it. It definitely worked for me, and stopped oil dead pretty much. It took about 5 days before I was confident it was working. I carried on for a while (6 months or so I would guess), but ultimately its a lot of tablets to keep buying and taking, so its a hard routine to follow. I also had diarrhea at about the same time, but it went away after about 4 days.
In the end I caved in and went for an accutane low dose (prescribed by my derm on the NHS in the UK).
A while on, what I would say is firstly really try and sort out your diet if its not that great. Try a low GI/GL diet, lots of healthy veg, and little grain/sugar. I also try and cut down red meat & saturated fats (some will disagree with that, but I think mainly don't have fats AND high carbs at the same time), and try not to take too much Biotin in my diet, as this seems to conflict, although I'm still trying to prove this one atm. Anyone who is afraid of hair loss should be wary of that and take some though. I also take Niacinimide which seems to help.
The diet definitely helps, and I think may allow a lower dose of B5 which I may try again if somehow my oil comes back, but I'm hoping I can get there without any supps soon.
Carina, I personally would go and see a derm and have a chat, there may be some alternatives.
Yeah, so a week ago I started my b5 treatment. Didn't expect much out of it due to some negative information regarding it on some sites [sites trying to sell acne diet books that is...]. I purchased 600 grams of powder form, then decided to take 5 grams for the first three days and 10 grams following like instructed. It has been 7 days exactly, and my skin is looking amazing...My scars are healing and fading every morning, they're almost completely gone. My forhead is 100% clear while my cheeks are becoming more clear each day. B5 is working as well as I figured Accutane would, I guess the results are synonymous. Who would have guessed a $17 powder would be more effective than my $280 acne blue lamp. Experiencing some minor side effects that are palatable, I have had diarrhea and I seem to have constant neck pains but am not sure if the pains are related to the pantothenic acid or not. I am not taking any b-complex so I may end up dealing with some vitamin deficiencies later on, but oh well! Too happy to care at the moment.
This is certainly the only treatment that has shown such significant positive results for me. I will resume this treatment for atleast one month. Thanks for displaying this information, it has helped me greatly!

I just got a bottle of B5 today, so I'm gonna start taking 500 mg a day. I'm weary about the negative side effects, so if I start to see any signs of hairloss/vision impairment, I'll get right off them. My acne isn't that bad but I figured I'd see if this dose makes any difference, I don't really want to take any more than 500 mg daily. Do you guys think it's worth it to take this for moderate/mild acne?
I'm also starting fish oil tablets.
Hiya, you could try upping it to 10 and see if it helps. I'd also make sure you have a decent diet without any processed foods and sugars, but lots of healthy green veg etc to help yourself as well.
10g is not an easy course to follow imo long term, but it can be worth a try and then you will know if it can help if really needed.
giantbran, I would give it another week or 2 at 5g first, it took me about 2-3 weeks to notice a decent decrease in oil. I am just starting 4 weeks and am still oily, but it is LESS than it was so I can only assume it will get better. I would rather it take longer on 5g then experience the side effects some have had with 10g,so I am sticking with the lower dose. I haven't had any side effects and want to keep it that way.
Ok, kids, I said I would post if anything changed, just over 2 months, bad breakout, now everything is calmindown, almost seems if it's starting to work. Cross my fingers, I'll kep in touch. I hope the worst is behind me. Also, started taking b complex 50 3 weeks ago and the hair thinning and shedding seems to have come to a halt. Still have blurry vision off and on though.

What are you taking, is it a reputable brand ? Also what is your diet like, and taking any extra supplements or anything ?
yellow urine is completely normal, it is just getting rid of extra, uneeded vitamins, this happens with most vitamins,no worries.
I would suggest to you and also Giantbran to try to be patient for a few more weeks, a few days and 2 weeks isn;t enough time. I am 5 weeks in now and decresed oil is very noticeable now, No cysts for a week. Still not completely clear, but much better than usual and for me to be able to tell adifference is something.. I am still on 5-6gms a day(sometimes I take 3 pills at a time, sometimes 4 )
Everyone is different, give it 6 weeks and if you notice no change at all in at least oil maybe try something else. If you notice a slight differece in less oil over the next few weeks stick with it. Accutane is going to take months to work too, so you might as well give this a fair shake first before you risk those side effects.
I just ordered a bunch of vitamins from Swanson, now that I am finally seeing results from something I am sticking it out.
WELL, i SPOKE TOO SOON. MY FACE IS HORRIBLY BROKEN OUT AND NOW MY LIPS HAVE EVEN SPLIT THIS IS JUST AS BAD AS ACCUTANE, WHICH I WOULD GO BACK ON BUT CANT FIND A DR WHO GIVES IT OUT ANYLONGER AS IT IS VERY HARD TO OBTAIN. I HAVE BEEN TO SO MANY DERMATOLOGISTS THRU THE YEARS MY FILES WOULD ADD UP TO 3 INCHES THICK. ILL GIVE THE B 2 MORE WEEKS AND THEN IM THROWING IN THE TOWEL. I GIVE UP!
