I used to have extremely oily skin, and always 4 or 5 pimples, as well as just bad skin from the pores being clogged. i did the b5 thing, taking 16 grams a day spaced out over 4 doeses a day. it has worked very well, i havent had any breakouts for two months and my skin looks so much better.
my question is, at this point (after 3 months), they say i can reduce my dosage, but it doesnt say anything about how many times a day i should take it. taking it 4 times a day is annoying, but id much prefer efectiveness over ease. so does anyone have any info about dosing after the three months is up?

good luck DJ, ive been doin 10 grams for about a month and a half now, and im seeing very nice results. My skin is still far from clear, but i dont even care, because i know that its getting nothing but better. Mostly my problem is the pimples that are dying out are giving my face a red hue, but i dont really get red marks that bad so i know that will go away, and itll b allllll goooood.
I have a question about b5... I've been on it for 6 months now and I have NO EFFING clue if it's working or not because I tried so many things at the same time I tried b5... I'm on 3g a day and I want to quit... I had really bad side effects when I started... WEIRD ones!! I felt like my eye balls were being sucked into the back of my head, my legs were blotchy all over and they stung around my ankles and I lost like 5 lbs (NOT GOOD FOR ME) ... and it didnt seem to reduce oil at all. These side effects happened while I was on 10g a day and now that I keep reducing half a gram once a month, at 3g I am getting the side effects again... it's weird... it's like withdrawl or something LOL... I just really want to quit this CRAP, I honestly dont think it's helping but I'm scared that if I quit I will break out massively . So I guess my question is has anyone ever had results with 3g a day? Has anyone ever had the same side effects as me?
Time Released
Some supplements are Time Released. This means that instead of a peak of absorbed in the body, Time Released will make absorption more constant. Some articles say that Time Released does not work as good as it should do. Most people don't use Time Released and most "vitamin B5 for acne shops" do not sell a time released form.
But, according to Don (from acne-vitamins.com), a time-released form of B5 will cause less absorption conflicts with other vitamin B's, and therefore reducing the chance of vitamin B deficiency. So then a time released form is safer when looking at vitamin deficiency. His statements about the time-released form:
Most time-release tablets work by using a coating that resists metabolism by stomach acids, with the contents instead being mostly absorbed in the small intestines, which have a higher rate of absorbance. Conversely, the majority of vitamins absorbed from foods and normal supplements are absorbed in the stomach.
Vitamins are absorbed by receptor molecules, and can compete for absorbance by these molecules. A deficiency could presumably occur if an overabundance of one vitamin out-competes other vitamins for the same type of receptor molecules, especially in the case that these receptor molecules have a higher affinity for said vitamin over others.
By using a time-released supplement, you are actually making the chances of this scenario far less likely. This is due to the fact that competing vitamins are almost always absorbed in the stomach (unless you're taking these in time-released form as well), so there is little concern over direct competition between vitamins for the same receptor molecules. Even if some competition occurs, it's nothing like the sudden flush of vitamin B5 (presumably five times per day) from high-doses of standard B5 capsules, again mostly absorbed in the concentrated area of the stomach. The later scenario is much more likely to result in a crowding-out of receptor molecules.

Has anyone ever had the same side effects as me?
I'm a 19 year old male and I've had mild acne for the past few years, with blackheads on my nose and on the sides of my nose, pimples around my chin, high on my cheeks, and fairly uneven skin tone. My biggest problem was the oiliness I would experience throughout the day. I would constantly be blotting my face with a tissue or toilet paper to remove the oil, a behavior which surely didn't help my condition.
I started using B5 a month and a half ago and have found it to be an essential supplement in my skincare regimen. I started by taking 5 grams a day for the first three days, then increasing to 10 grams for the next month. (Note: I did not take B5 with a B-Complex as some people recommend, yet I still experienced good results, although I am now using a B-complex to see if there is any difference). During the first week I saw a dramatic decrease in my skin's oil production. I didn't feel like I had to blot my skin at all and also felt more confident. The next week I saw that some of my pimples were being brought to the surface, yet over the week the pimples did not improve, but did not get worse either.
At this point, I decided that because the B5 was bringing some of my acne to the surface, a topical cream like Retin-A might be worth trying to help shed the acne off. So I got a perscription for Retin-A Micro from my dermatologist. B5 and the topical Retin-A Micro work very well together. When I was using Differin about a year and a half ago, I found that my skin would get even oiler during the day as a response to the drying effect Differin had. It seemed in the long run that the negative effects of stress from overly oily skin and constant blotting outweighed the benefits of the Differin and my acne did not improve. However, now that I'm using B5 with Retin-A Micro (similar to Differin) my skin is balanced and I hardly accumulate any significant amount of oil during the day which makes the Retin-A Micro treatment much more bearable.
As of now, my skin tone and complexion have improved dramatically. My skin is much more even, radiant, smooth, and healthy looking. My pore size has decreased as well and the severity and visibility of my pimples have diminished. I have recently been experimenting with the dosage to find what is the best balanced for me and have noticed that about 5 grams is enough to maintain the same results as I got with 10 grams. (I think that a good part of the 10 gram dosage was just being passed through my body anyway).
I must emphasize that although important, B5 has not been the only reason for my improvement in the past month and a half. In addition to B5 and Retin-A Micro, I have also recently begun using a Glycolic compound scrub that is excellent and I also go to the aesthetician at my dermatologist every two weeks for microdermabrasion and extractions. The combination of all of those acne treatments have produced the best results I've ever experienced.
The major contributions that I believe B5 supplementation has made, are a dramatic reduction in oil production, a less dramatic decrease in pore size, and a reduction in stress [(a) because I am not as worried about having an oily complexion and (b) possibly because B5 is thought to be an anti-stress vitamin do to its role in adrenal gland function].
I highly recommend adding B5 to a balanced skin regimen as the risk of serious side effects are very low because it is a water soluble vitamin like Vitaimin-C. I have not experienced any hair-thinning as few people report and I also have not experienced any weight loss. I've actually found it easier to put on healthy muscle mass because of B5's role in protein synthesis. I've experienced minimal stomach grumbling, but have found my self more regular and less prone to stomach pains that I had prior to beginning B5 supplementation.
Suggestions: -Use a moisturizer every morning to prevent any overdrying that may occur from a decrease in oil production. -Use in conjunction with a topical antibiotic if so desired (if recommended by a doctor) as the combination can improve skin progressively over time.
Here is my current regimen which is working very well.
Morning/Breakfast: -Gently Exfoliate with M.D. Formulations Face Scrub (w/glycolic compound)
-Apply Aveeno Positively Radiant SPF 15 Moisturizer
-Take 3 500 mg capsules of NOW Pantothenic Acid (B5)
-Take one B-complex pill
-Take 1000 mg vitamin-C
-Take one Acidophilus capsule (for digestive tract health)
Lunch: -Take 2 B5 capsules
Dinner: -Take 2 B5 capsules
-Take 1000 mg vitamin C
Before Bed: -Wash with Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
-Apply Retin-A Micro gel sparingly 30 minutes later
-Take 3 B5 capsules
-Take one Acidophilus capsule
-Take 22 mg capsule of zinc picolinate(for redness)
Here's where I order my B5 from: http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/now/pan.html
and this is my B-complex: http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/un/vitbcom.html
Even with shipping, both are very cheap compared to most other vitamin stores, yet they are high quality. The deals on that Puritan Pride site are pretty attractive and I plan on trying their products the next time I need to restock.

Quite interested in trying this stuff out, I'm from the uk, and I've found this stuff from a uk health shop http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/pro...=1&cpid=208
Was wondering if it matters whether it's time release or not, my acne is very mild at the moment, what would you recommend as a daily starting dosage, and I've heard this vitamin causes hair loss for some people, what the likeliness of this happening?
im from uk, been on vitamin b5 for a bout 2weeks. ive been using 500mg capsules, i started on taking 4 a day for about a week, then started taking 10 a day from then on.
and every day now my skin has been peeling and my acne is fading and fading away, i dont want to jynx it but i really think its working for me. i dont think it being time releases matters that much, but ive been using just normal 500mg capsules, i thought i would have real trouble swallong tablets(i hate swalloing tables tottally), but after the first two days ive totaly masterd it now there sooo eays to swallow, i dont even feel them going down anymore.
im gunna keep at this b5 for a while, i really hope its working it seems to be at the momemnt.
Listen
- If B5 isn't working for you, I recommend going to a vitamin store and buying a brand name one and not some no-name brand off the internet. The one I currently is VitaminShoppe.
- SPREAD IT OUT to at least 3x a day, at least.
- Drink water, seriously, drink lots of water.
- B complex isn't a absolute must. It's optional. Take it if you wish so.
- I take 3 grams daily. 10 grams is for people with severe acne or people who are eager to get rid of thier acne. After your acne problems go away. You could drop down to 3 grams.
- We do not know if its safe to keep overdosing at 10 grams.
- Yes you can still apply BP and wash your face.
- In certain B complex pills, there's something called Biotin. There have been reports by users that this breaks them out.
- Does it get rid of red marks? some users report so and some don't, I guess it varies
Does it get rid of scars? most likely not
