Without trying to put on any bias or spin on this:Does anyone believe that taking fish oil capsules made their acne worse?
Seen as noone has answered this i am going to give my view:
If i had had to choose either improvement or worsening, when i first started taking fish oil, then i'd have had to say worsening.
It could have been some other factors but it seemed to coincide with starting fish oil at higher dosages.
And how long did you use it?
I am still using it and have been for almost a month now.I have been taking 3.6 grams per day for the past 2 weeks.
You need to keep going. I've been taking similar levels for a month now, but before then, I was only taking about 1g a day. I'm starting to notice results now, but people seem to be really noticing good results when taking 3-4g per day for at least 3 months. My oil production has gone down since I've gone above 2.4g per day, and I can't remember the last new whitehead that developed.
Most people seem to be showing positive results from this programme. Have you checked to make sure your tablets are ok? In that they are not rancid, have only Omega 3 in them etc. I know a lot of fish oil comes with Omega 3 and 6, and too much Omega 6 is not good for your skin. You might also just need more time on them. Be patient.
How does everyone remember to take so many tablets in one day? I'm really struggling fitting in 10 a day. I take 3 when I get up, 2 at lunch, 2 at about 6pm, then 3 before I go to bed. But I find it really difficult to remember to take them all the time. Like today - it was 4pm before I realised I'd forgotten to take my Lunch tablets! I still took them as soon as I remembered because I figured better to take them late than not at all.
I'm often out and about on the road for work, or in meetings or at work do's, so I find it hard to remember to take the 4 during the day - any suggestions as to how to prompt me into taking them?! Thanks.
NdnRomeo, what do you suggest I do? Buy new capsules?
Here you go:

I think she could help, apparently higher EPA is best for skin. Interesting, as I can understand why. So don't throw them away or anything, use them up 🙂

Hmmm....see when this thread first got started, there were a few people that said it made their face worse but it was clear that they had only used it for a couple days or weeks and were probably just breaking out from their normal causes, AND they just wanted to shoot down the new idea. Youve been using it for a little while now, but i'd encourage you to keep it up a little longer. It just doesn't really make sense to me how it could make it worse for a select few people, because all the science behind fish oil says it should help skin(among other things), and for many people it has, to at least a small degree.
If you really think its making your face worse, then stop, but I definitely think you should give it more time. So far it seems that fish oil's effects build up over time, and it could just be that your taking a little bit longer to see improvement.
you don't HAVE to take fish oil with food but here are two reasons you should:1. food helps you absorb fish oil more readily
2. some ppl have reported stomach discomfort and/or nausea after taking fish oils on an empty stomach (yours truly included). i'm assuming this is due to the fish oil sitting around in the intestines from not being absorbed correctly.
BUT
if you take Lecithin with the fish oil you knock out these two problems. lecithin solubilizes the fish oil into an absorbable form and it more easily passes into your system. lecithin can be found in pill form and it is cheap. on nights that i forget to take fish oil with meals, i'll take it with lecithin (recommended dose on bottle) before bed and i have never had a problem with cramping and nausea since.
do u have to take fish oils pills with food? or does it not matter?i just wanted to add that you can refrigerate your fish oil right after you open it. i left my last bottle out on the kitchen counter and it got that fishy smell after about a week. when i started a new bottle i just stuck it in the frige and have not have a problem with smell ever since.
when any oil is packaged, oxygen is normally replaced with another gas (nitrogen, i think) that is inert and won't react and spoil the food product. after you open it you let oxygen in, which will start to react with the oil...and the smell is just basically your fish oil going bad.
I am going to take the advice of your refrigeration and start doing it, I don't know why I never did, especially since it's starting to become summer here and it's alot more humid and hot etc.
I was trying to look into lecithin because I know that emulsification of fish oil (binding water and oil) would be most important but I learned that by taking a lecithin supplement, that it may not ensure it works since emulsification usually takes hours and by that time it's already both absorbed? I was really confused on that. Did you have issues on an empty stomach? Did it stop after lecithin? It looks like it's worth looking into but I am not 100% sure if it would do what it says it can due to the nature of how emulsification works. So tell me more, I'm interested.
Interesting. As far as my washing regimen goes, I wash with Purpose Gentle Cleansing Bar (the bar many swear by on this site) and an exfoliating sponge. When I use the sponge I exfoliate as gently as possible. While my face looks like it has little to no peeling, my skin texture is all f-ed up. Perhaps using the sponge may make my pores look and open wider........or something???As far as the aforementioned foods go..............damn, if I cut down on the Chef Boyardee (I could easily cut down on ramen entirely) then I have no idea what I could possibly eat throughout the day that' healthy and could fill my stomach (as I mentioned before, skinny w/fast metabolism). I've been eating Chef Boyardee on a regular basis since childhood............think doing that has a hand in the acne I have today???
Back to multi-vitamins, are you sure that if taken with fish oil that neither will interfere with each other on "cancel" their purposes??? I also take Aloe Vera pills from time to time when I have toilet troubles, but don't know if it's safe or productive to take those along with the aforementioned two. What are your guys' take on this???
Autonomous made a thread before asking how we used to eat during childhood, surprisingly most of us here ate really bad. For instance, when I was young, I kept eating ramen for lunch, pizza for school, and cocoa cereal for breakfast and rice in the evening. That may be the reason for why our situation is much worse than what it should have been. (maybe?). There is a thread about here for acne safe foods, there's a whole list of things. Try seeing what you like out of there and stock up on it, get into the regimen... it will be difficult to make changes but before you know it, it will be routine and simple. The hardest thing a human can do is change, but if you learn the art you will benefit in leaps and bounds.
About the multi, yes I am sure 🙂 If you feel uneasy, you can try to take it at a different time where it isn't with fish oil. Hopefully that will help, but it won't make a difference since fish oil is a macro nutrient, and vitamins do not hinder absorption like green tea does etc.
Just a question, how do people take antibiotics with their fish oil? I'm currently taking 100mg doxycycline with the fish oil concurrently after a meal, 10x300mg EPA+DHA, but was worried that the doxy might negate the benefits of the fish oil.
Shoot your doctor a question just generally saying you are taking o3 supplements, will that intefere with it? I highly doubt it will, but you may ask if you want to be sure. It should not hinder it at all, since it's just a fat. 🙂

Well see, it's become natural to take f.o. as a part of every meal, in fact it's almost the opposite now. I remember to take f.o. but remember that I also have to eat first.
And plus acne is always on my mind and how much I have improved and can't wait to completely be done with it so it pushes me to keep taking it, so it's hard for me to forget.
Another way is that now my body can tolerate a high dose at once, so I can get away with taking 4 or even 5 pills at once. But before I would almost faint doing so, now I feel nothing. So it allows me to only take it 3x a day. Maybe you can take it like 3 in the morn, 4 afternoon, 3 night?
So its been 2 weeks since I started Fish Oil. I've been taking 3.6g's per day and I recently upped it to 4.2g.
I do notice some results so far. My hair and body seem to be less oily. The oil on my face does seem a bit thinner but its hard to tell.
As far as breakouts go I'd say they have slowed down a bit. I usually average maybe 2-3 pimples per week. This early its hard to tell if its the fish oil or if I'm just having a good week.
My main reason for taking fish oil is to make my skin more resilient. I've been on accutane twice and now my skin is just damn sensitive to anything and the tone is pretty uneven. I'm pretty sure its the sebum that is making my skin all haywire. I never had these problems while I was on accutane and they only started once the oil returned. Accutane was great but some of the post effects are strange and annoying. I really hope that fish oil can counteract the damage i've done.
so 2 weeks and i've maybe noticed some results. In a month i'll have a better idea of where this is going.
I just got free 200 grams of fish oil (500 pills at 400 mg each) since puritan's pride gave me a refund and I didn't have to ship it back (I found it doesn't have tocopherol and asked if I could get a refund, they said yes but also said I could keep it oddly?) so I will probably increase it even more just because I can... and I have only 2 more weeks till summer school, so I will see if it gets much better.

Hehe think I could pull the same thing off? just kidding...how much are you taking now then?

Haha, don't count on it, it's probably just dumb luck, not a loophole.
I am going to up it slowly. But as of right now, I am taking somewhere between 3.6 grams to 4.8 grams depending on the day and all.
my skin has definitely improved since taking O3. if not for O3 i would have been back on accutane. however, i do still get whiteheads on my forhead, nose & chin and on some days my skin can become rather oily. should we perhaps up the dose, to get faster results? mmm. how high can we go. Just a pity is is so expensive.

A cost effective brand, besides member's mark is puritan's pride. even right now they have a buy one get one free sale. But the thing is, each pill has 400 mg of o3, so calculating that ends up being pretty cheap.
And yes, up it slowly if you want. Just don't go TOO high

Cause you can go too high. 😆
Thanks for the words of encouragement i-have-a-question and Bobby Digital. I will keep up the fish oil.
I had decided to lower it to just 2.7 grams a day instead as i have read that it's best not to take more than 2 of your daily grams in supplement form, plus Cordain (paleo diet advocate) advises to take 2 grams of Omega 3.
After you have voiced your opinions though, i am gonna put it back up to 3.6 grams. I'm not sure if it was making it worse. Infact i'm more likely to think it was doing nothing than making it worse and right now probably making things better, but at the start i got demoralized and its easy to start blaming things you've jsut started doing.
Plus i had heard someone say it made them breakout so it was kinda floating round my subconscious.
I'm back on the straight and narrow now lol.

Man that is so true 🙁 I think acne is making us so paranoid about everything, it can really do bad things to our brains. Especially when we take things and then the next minute we break out, we want to blame it all on the last thing we added. Really sucks! It's so hard to understand what to believe when there are different opinions about nearly everything.
Keep your head up 🙂 We're all here to guide you!
So I have been taking Fish Oil for 1 1/2 weeks now and for the first time in a few months I have no breakouts. I used to get 3-4 whiteheads everyday but today marks the first time in a long time of no whitehead breakouts. Or am I not breaking out because exams ended two days ago?? haha. I'm pretty sure it's cause of less stress AND fish oil. I have one question though.. am I supposed to take 2-4 grams of EFA's and DHA's combined? or 2-4 grams of Fish Oil? Because EFA's and DHA's are only a portion of the fish oil. For example, two of my fish oil tablets have 1200mgs of fish oil and a total of 700+ mgs of EFA/DHA combined. so 2-4 g's of fish oil or 2-4 g's of EFA/DHAs?
So I've finally hit the 1 month mark. I took between 1 and 3.6 grams a day the first 2 weeks and the past 2 weeks I have been taking 4.2 grams a day. I took Green Tea extracts the first 2 weeks as well but kicked those as soon as I found out they could be interfering with the Fish Oil.
To be honest, I havn't noticed much oil reduction in my face. However, for the past week or so my face has looked the clearest it has in months and I probably havn't gotten a new pimple on my face for about a week as well. However, this morning I could see a red area and I was sure that when I got home from school I was going to see a white head. I got home, looked in the mirror, and it had already begun to scab over and go down! It's amazing because in the past it would have just broken out but it's like something "blocked" it and I'm sure that something is the fish oil.
As for food, I've tried to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into my day. I used to eat a whole large pizza by myself every Friday. I used to always eat 2 pieces of cake after every dinner during the week (I'm 5'7 and 125 lbs so I'm not fat - again with the acne/metabolism correlation maybe?). I stopped both of those though. If I want something sweet after dinner I go for the fruit or I might have some low sugar Graham Crackers or something. I don't totally restrict myself though, I still eat some of the "forbidden acne foods" - but it's ok because it's not in excess and I'm pretty sure the food I'm eating isn't breaking me out. I see a bunch of breakfasts people have on here, but I can't do some of them. I'd be starving. This is what I've been eating for breakfast the past week:
2 cinnamon waffles with homemade strawberry juice (lemon juice and some sugar with strawberries soaking in it to flavor it) in place of syrup (If I want syrup I use the reduced sugar kind ), strawberries, light whipped cream, a few sprinkles - and an orange.
See, I'm not eating like only half an apple for breakfast and I'm not getting worse. If anything I'm getting better.
I'm definitely gonna stick with the fish oil. Can't wait to see where I'll be a few months from now

Great to hear your having success. You said your not noticing much change in excess oil...I didn't either untill well into 2 months(though it still fluctuates) so keep it up!
