Alright guys, I got blood work done on friday, should have my results this week. I have the old results to compare to so we can finally see if theres any good/bad effects of massive fish oil on cholesterol levels.

You recommend taking a bunch of fish oil pills throughout the day, but how can you be sure they're not just being flushed out with the urine?

Fat isn't flushed out with urine.

did you get to see mine 🙂 They were awesome!

Back again, after doing a bit of lurking...........

Well, my 1st bottle of GNC Fish Oil is nearing it's end and I'm wondering now whether to spring for another bottle (or in turn spring for another brand of bottle) or............hell I don't know.

I think because I've been taking them so on and off over the last month or so that the pills haven't been working as well as I figure they should. I've stopped and started numerous times because of some perceived "side effects" or because I felt the pills were taking a toll on my blood pressure (increased fatigue/sleepiness being the tell-tale sign). The most I've taken in a day so far is about 1.8 to 2.2 grams.

I ask though, getting all of those Omega-3's is fine and dandy, but are we ignoring the main ingredient in these pills, the fish oil??? My pills contain 1000mg of fish oil each. In taking all of these pills for their Omega-3's aren't we overloading much, much more on fish oil??? Any dangers or side effects of that???

And lastly, I've been reading you guys talking about the freshness of your pills and such. Well, on the front of the bottle of my pills it proclaims "Guaranteed purity and freshness". Should I take their word for it??? The inside of the bottle with all of the pills has had a strong, distinct smell (not necessarily bad, but "fishy" or "seafoody") ever since I first opened them, but I felt nothing when I took them (despite the pills being "lemon-flavored"). On the GNC website they mentioned in fine print that I should store the bottle inside a fridge, which is what I've been doing. Problem is the inside of my fridge becomes moist at times. Would and could that affect my pills??? Another issue is that my kitchen has little to no ventilation, so when there's cooking going on it almost always get hot, especially in the summer. Am I better off keeping the bottles in the (sometimes moist) fridge, outside the fridge or the (brrrrr!!!) freezer???

And one last thing, eating tons of the "Smart Balance Omega" Peanut Butter that I brought up a couple of days ago won't affect my fish oil diet, right??? Because the PB has become a daily staple of my breakfast. Yup, 4 toasted bread slices and at the end wash it down with a big glass of orange juice...............or is that too a detriment to my acne and fish oil diet DAMMIT??? *starts kicking and punching the air* I refuse to starve because of acne!

Please do forgive all of my questions and concerns. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Buy from online this time, its cheaper, gnc is over priced.

Whats your diet like, and since youve only taken 2.2 grams max you havent really fixed your deficit but just stayed at under 1:1 which will take a lot longer to see results. 3 to 4 grams is optimal to get results as fast as possible by doing it safely.

The fish oil is actually a combination of everything: half of it being saturated fat, and the rest being a polyunsaturated fat (omega 3). Sat fats are needed for absorption purposes, so they are necessary. I take 14 pills a day. Thats 7 grams of sat fat = two 2% cups of milk worth. No danger at all. Its very healthy. No sat fat is not so good either.

If you arent getting fish burps its fine, bite into one and taste it. It should taste like fish a bit. Most gnc products are over priced but good quality, so it should be okay, no worries. If theres no fish burps its generally ok (just a rule of thumb). You can do the bite test, or the fridge test.

Generally for foods (Im a hotel/restaurant manager major), they recommend NOT to throw hot foods in the fridge, and let it cool down before putting it in the fridge, as it can cause the exact problem you are concerned for. But either way, it should be fine, since its cooler than even room temperature. I actually just leave mine in my room and do a rancid test every month, they hold up fine, so you should be fine.

Nuts and egg yolks should be avoided as just a bit of nuts contains a LOT of omega 6 fats. It can just take a lot longer for you to see results off the fish oil. High omega 3, low omega 6 diet brings in results much faster. Once you are at your desired results you can throw that stuff back in. Orange juice is pretty high in sugar content, its probably worse than coke. Try fresh fruit instead. I used to eat like you (no joke) the toast on peanut butter and orange juice, the in the afternoon 3 whole eggs, scambled with a mini ladel of vegetable oil. Then later raman noodles. (this was my deteriment this is a LOT of sugar from refined carbs, and orange juice, and LOTS of omega 6.. from egg yolk and peanut butter). I used to also eat a lot of nuts.

No wonder I got acne. It all boils down to health.

Good rule of thumb

Good fats, Complex carbs (non-processed), and Good protein. If most of your diet follows this, (with lots of omega 3 of course which is your good fat), then you can be fine. The good part is sat fat is fine, omega 3 will also help regulate blood sugar levels so you can add in some of your daily indulgence, but just a bit, not a lot till you get too full.

I found a good article on why flaxseed oil sucks over fish oil.

http://health.msn.com/centers/cardio/artic...entid=100147781

=)

A better comparison might be between the fish oil and flaxseed oil capsules. The first thing to notice about flaxseed oil is the serving size. For the Spectrum brand, itas six capsules! According to the label, that six-capsule serving supplies 3.4 grams of ALA, which converts to roughly 340 mg of omega-3s. A single fish oil capsule will give you about that much omega-3.

Another problem with flaxseed oil is the omega-6 content (about two grams per tablespoon). Omega-6 metabolism competes with ALA for some of the same enzymes, so ALA might not reach its full omega-3 potential if thereas a lot of omega-6 around.

I was looking for this to show to all the people I know that keeps praising flax over fish oil. Ha.

I wouldn't take flax seed oil at all.

Another problem with flaxseed oil is the omega-6 content (about two grams per tablespoon).

2 grams per tablespoon plus around 2 grams in your diet = no matter how much omega 3 you'd take, you'll still be behind, it may take even longer to get results then.

Know what I mean?

my skin is also not doing too well, i think it is the tane wearing off again, and maybe the o6 overdose in nuts. should really stop eating them, otherwise i will never reach 1:1. thanks for the information on the GTE, will stop taking them as of 2day. awaiting the revelation!

If you are at a deficiency, you need to be over 1:1 for a few months to get to an equilibrium within a couple of months rather than in 6+ months (who knows how long it could really take?)

So please stop eating nuts and egg yolks, they kill. And how much omega 3 are you taking

i'm taking 2 to 3 tablespoons of fish oil, 1 teaspoon (5 ml) contains 900 mg EPA and 600 mg DHA (molecularly distilled) The Real Thing Brand (South Africa). so i should be between 4 and 5 grams O3. started with the high dose (4 g), did not have any bad effects whatsoever. my skin is actually less oily today, hope it is my refrain from the nuts that is doing the trick, still eating eggs on weekends though, can only eat so much oats / quinoa during the week.

Woa that is awesome, you will definitely begin to see results faster. Just stay away from those 06's and it will happen faster than most. It gets real good so just keep going.

Hi,

I'm hoping to incorporate fish oil into my fight against acne and bad skin after failed attempts with so many products. I'm from the UK, and have found these capsules from a company called Healthspan

[Removed]

Since I'm not very well up on fish oils, I'm actually really confused with ingredients and dosage etc., would these capsules be correct? Also, how many mg or grams would I need to take as a daily dose?

Thanks a lot for your help.

I started fish oil and green tea together on April 13th (17 days ago). However, I stopped taking the Green Tea two days ago. I woke up this morning though, and my skin looked alot better than it has in quite some time. I've also been using Differin cream so maybe that's starting to kick in. I've also been using the Baby brush method differently than I used to and I've cut down on my sugar intake and I don't eat whole pizzas every Friday anymore.

It's only been a little over 2 weeks and I'm starting to see results. Like I said though, I got here while taking the Green Tea as well so I hope my face doesn't get bad again now that I've given it up. I'm sure the Fish Oil makes more of an impact anyway.

considering how bad the average north american diet is in total fat content i don't think even 15g is enough each day

unfortunately such high amounts of omega 3 get very expensive very fast even from cheap brands

Simple solution, eat less omega 6. I'm not really sure if omega 3 is helping me or not, I have yet to really see a clear difference for sure (I've tried up to 5g / day but started getting nauseous at that amount). However, if I eat a bunch of nuts or have fried foods in any vegetable oil (loaded with omega 6), my skin definitely pays for it the next couple days. When I avoid these, I definitely improve.

many grain products even the multigrain/whole wheat/rye type have decent omega 6 content too

you add up all these little sources of omega 6 over the course of a day without even touching nuts, seeds, cooking oils, eggs, dairy, beef, pork, etc. and you can still come up with a seriously imbalanced ratio

It's interesting to see the effect of omega 3 on people whom have more than mild acne, because that is where we see how effective this is at controlling the central issues. It makes me wonder if there is any other effective treatment short of accutane that can help. Because even accutane isn't 100% and it makes me wonder why it isn't if it shuts off oil glands all together. Any idea? What other factors come into play? What else are we missing? Eventually we need to do something to incorporate into this that we can try to make even better to cover every single aspect if possible.

That is what happened to me as well, it was quite noticable just a couple of days after stopping green tea. I was surprised to what extent green tea actually restricts fat absorption. One week in it's better, gradually increasing to the point where you can be close to completely oil free. I guess at least now one day when I'm older and if I have any weight problems, I know a supplement that could aid in that at least. So the 2 months weren't a complete waste with green tea hehe.

Thanks a lot for your help.

I am not sure if that brand is reputable, but the most important thing comes if you actually know if that brand is reputable. Second comes the price, if you can afford it. Because I do know some brands overcharge a lot. If you can afford it, and it's reputable, go for it. I know many UK users are using boots, or holland and something, I can't recall the name. Read a few pages back and try to see if you find it.

Basically what you are looking for, is the omega 3 content. Usually, each pill is a gram of fish oil. Within the fish oil, there is an EPA and DHA content. These figures are what you are looking for. That is your omega 3 content. Usually in the ingredients it will say EPA - 180 DHA - 120 (just an example). If you add these figures up, you will get the omega 3 quantity.

You basically will be taking 3 to 4 grams daily of omega 3. But you will be going up slowly, so you won't be taking this all at once.

I hope that helps, sorry I couldn't be of more help, I'm really unfamiliar with UK brands etc.

Oh I know, it's so scary. Especially when you go to nutritiondata.com and check out how much omega 3 and 6 are in each item. Sometimes it's like omega 3 - 20 mg. Omega 6 - 300 mg. My daily intake usually adds up to 2 grams of omega 6 even though I eat so little (and keeping out the bad omega 6 foods). Imagine how much people get normally.

Oh one question, how long did it take for it to kick in for you?

Depends on what one means by an imbalanced ratio. There really isn't anmy standard for omega ratios. 1:1 gets tossed around because some people say our ancestors probably ate around that, but no one really has any clue. In the end, everyone just has to find their "comfort zone" and stick with it.

Yeah, you are right, omega-6 is practically in almost everything, but if you don't eat processed foods and cut out nuts, seeds and oils there is a drastic difference. Its very possible to balance out your fruits and veggies if you eat a lot of green leafy veggies and cauliflower, they have more o3 than o6. Also, eat grass-fed beef, free range eggs, and the ratios are much improved for these. Eat some fish (the mercury levels in salmon are relatively low according to the EPA), sprinkle some flax and its very possible to get a decent ratio before adding fish oil. It is a battle, but I've been tracking my intake according to nutritiondata.com 's numbers on and off for the past two months and it is possible. So far today I have more o3 than o6 (even using their numbers for grain fed beef but I ate grass fed).

Sorry, this has probably been asked a million times... whats the perfect ratio (and the recommended ratio, just so I can compare) we should be aiming for?

For UK-ers, just to clear it up, Boots and Holland and Barratt are the best places. The Superdrug stuff is rubbish.

If you are clear right now, for general health, getting in between 1:5 to 1:2 ratio is probably good enough. But for our sake, we're trying to replenish a deficiency, and since it would take months staying at 1:1... we're going above 1:1 to bring the equilibrium up much faster, yet still taking adequate and safe amounts.

Hope that helps.

I found a web page where one doc found that 5 of his patients broke out worse on fish oil capsules. He suspected it was the fatty acids.

http://yarchive.net/med/acne.html

YMMV.

Does not actually seem to be written by a Dr :

I wonder if I might drop in here on the argument with some anectodal

observations. Ordinarily I hate this kind of thing, but I suppose it's

okay if clearly labeled. Besides, I want to get comments from others

here.

I've had perhaps five patients who've noted a serious increase in acne

after going on fishoil capsules (EPA), and this also proved to be a

problem for them on linseed oil and (to a lesser extent) borage oil. I

infer that omega-3 fats may be involved. I've also see (I think)

patients who were sensitive to B5 and biotin, and broke out when taking

megadoses of these. This is interesting particularly in that both are

involved in fatty acid metabolism. Most of these people were taking

vitamin E, so their antioxident defenses were not being particularly

stressed.

Anyway, the observation was so interesting that I thought I'd throw it

out here. You won't read about it in any text-- indeed you will read

that acne is not caused by chocolate (no doubt true), and is not diet

related (of this I'm not so sure-- perhaps people didn't notice the fish

and certain plant oils).

Of course, this is not to say that I discount all the other well-known

contributors to acne: genetics, skin bacteria, pore cleansing, hormones,

etc, etc, etc. Just that I think I've noticed one more factor.

Can someone help please? I started taking fish oil (3.2g) three weeks and 3 days ago. Shortly after that, I upped it to 4.2g or so. A week after I started the fish oil I added in green tea (2 x 400 mg a day). Last week my skin was starting to look really good. I had no new pimples except for a few whiteheads (which probably has to do with the fact that I only wash with water and don't exfoliate).

Exactly a week ago, I upped the green tea to 3-4 caps a day and also starting drinking 3 ounces aloe vera a day. Now, since Thursday, I started breaking out again! Mainly along my jawline and around my mouth. I had been getting used to waking up to no new pimples. I'm trying to figure out where I went wrong. I'm thinking it's probably not the green tea because I had been taking that for two weeks or so, so why would more make me break out? Do you think it could be the aloe? I know it was mentioned that green tea might inhibit absorption of fish oil because it's good for fat loss. I looked it up and aloe is supposed to help with fat loss too so maybe it was stopping the fish oil from being absorbed? I haven't been taking any green tea or aloe for two days now and I currently have 4 very big pimples and a few more under the surface waiting to come out.

This is so frustrating, I wish I knew what caused it. I also haven't changed my diet so that can't be it. I did go tanning last week but that never made me break out before so I'm hoping it wasn't that either. What should I do? Stop green tea completely for now or go back to only taking 2 caps a day? Thanks.

Stop the green tea and aloe vera. It's more than likely the green tea, the second you increased it, more fat prevents from being absorbed.. hence less omega 3 technically being absorbed into the body/or used by the body. One or two probably hindered it too, but only a little with most going through, 3 or 4 kills it completely. Btw, 3 or 4 is the amount that they use in clinical studies, so you can see how it was the most effective, but in our case it was effective in a negative way. Stop it for the next 4 days and see what happens. For me it made all the difference in the world.

I still want to take green tea, but I think now I will be wise about it... aka only taking it when I have a headache or need relaxation, things like that, not on a daily basis.
