You definitely don't need to supplement omega 6. I'm in the same boat trying to gain weight, and if your diet is anything like mine you're already getting plenty (lots of nuts, seeds, beans, grains, etc.)Some foods with good omega 3s, if you're curious: walnuts, fish, flaxseed. Um.....there may be more, but those are the biggies that come to mind. Personally I find it really hard to get enough omega 3. I don't even think having a 1:1 ratio or anywhere near it whilst attempting to gain weight is possible without taking some sort of supplement. It just seems quite scarce, to be honest. Unless you're eating fish every day, and then you have to think about mercury.
Just gotta do the best we can, I guess.
hey, good to find someone like me whose trying to gain weight and has acne. Its kinda hard to do both cause to gain weight you needa eat calories, but doing that gives acne...but if you dont eat you dont gain weight lol. Im finding it hard to balance
Do you think you can post an example of what you're eating? Cause i'm not eating the seeds, nuts etc. you mentioned. Basically for me just eggs/toast/oatmeal in the morning....and for lunch and dinner a lot of meat, and a mass gainer after workout to try and boost my calories. Im curious to know what you're eating...thanks!
Here's kind of an outline of my typical diet at the moment. Keep in mind it's not perfect and I'm planning to add some stuff:
Breakfast-
~ Oatmeal with raisins and low fat milk
~ Orange juice
~ Some sort of nut (usually walnuts or almonds)
Lunch:
~ More nuts
~ Organic pb&j sandwich
Dinner:
~ Varies a lot, but pasta is a biggie. Always with a tomato sauce.
~ Salad with olive oil/balsamic vinegar dressing and beans (either kidney or black, generally)
~ Fruit juice of some sort
At various intervals: Granola/protein bars, Odwalla protein shakes (the vanilla ones are really good).
Things I plan to add: Avocado, sunflower seeds, green smoothies.
Again, very rough outline. It's far from perfect, but I hope that helps.
I just decided to somewhat cut dairy out of my diet (besides breakfast).. so here's what i'm left with daily.
Breakfast:
Hunny Bunches of Oats Cherrios (I think its called?) or else Cinnamin Life Cereal.
Lunch:
Apple and banana maybe.. or oatmeal made with water.
2 tsp of flax oil
Dinner:
Maybe rye bread with honey... or a nutrigrain bar.. or an apple.
Yeah.. not much... The joys of being an extremely picky eater.. I wish I liked vegetables.

just curious to know...is you actually gaining weight from that diet? because to be honest it doesnt look like a lot of calories :S
If I am gaining, it's happening very slowly. My dad was very thin and had a really high metabolism when he was my age, and it looks to be the same with me. But that diet is quite calorie dense, even though it may not look it. If I make sure to follow through and regularly include those snacks I mentioned, I'm definitely getting 2500-3000 calories a day. Obviously it depends a lot on serving size as well. That dinner I mentioned tends to hit around 800-1000 calories by itself, for example.
Is Extra virgin olive oil better then peanuts?Olive oil is a little pricey
$9 for 30 servings... thats one bottle a week, $40 a month on olive oil. >.<
Walmart man!
Where do you shop? 🙂
And yes, it's all in the extra virgin olive oil. If you watch enough food network, you'll also begin to notice how much EVOO they use, and now you know why. 🙂
Or better yet, go to SAMS club or Costco and stock up! Do the math there and see how much it works out per serving and compare it. I will tell you the price next time I go to get another bottle, which should be I believe tomorrow.
Also you can try taking in 3 servings :), but I mean just try it, different strokes for different folks! If not, you can always take more later you know?
Hey NdnRomeo,
I realize you have to take one thing at a time here and that is the best way to evaluate the effectiveness of each one. However, I was wondering if you have researched or used or plan to check out other oils, such as evening primrose, borage, or even other plant oils?

I have tried evening prim rose in the past as well. I do know borage and evening prim rose oil are good oils too since they contain GLA. They are good supplements as well. I did not have too much success with it individually, though it's definitely worth a shot too if nothing seems to be working. Borage oil primarily, since it contains more GLA than evening prim rose. But the benefit of evening prim rose being it's cheaper and more readily available. Borage is a bit hard to find unless it's online.
What are some other foods that olive oil goes good with? I'm going to start taking it since I have some left from when I tried that oil cleansing method. I poured a little over my salad today and I actually don't really like the way it tastes. I eat eggs and gluten free pasta sometimes now so I'll try it with them but I'm not sure what else the oil would go with.

I put it in my eggs and pasta as well 🙂
I also enjoy doing what snack said. Mixing extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar with some pepper and basil (crushed and dried... the kind you buy as a garnish). And using that as a dip with some bread. Real yummy.
Hey guys, just a question. How do you guys know if the brand you're using contains synthetic vitamins or not? Is it the price? I've been using cod liver oil from Life brand. Compared to other brands, it's quite cheap (under $10) so it got me asking if the vitamins in it is natural or synthetic.
I don't know about omega, but I have experience alot better results from the supplement im taking that contains zinc. I don't know if it has to do with the price or just who manufactures it.

Cod liver oil is relatively cheap so that is good. But the good thing with oil is that they are not synthetic generally. Only vitamins are. A good example would be vitamin A. They can be in it's natural form of synthetic, which can be dangerous if overdosed. But what some companies COULD do is put synthetic vitamin A in cod liver oil for some reason. I've heard of that. E-mail the company and see if they are using natural or synthetic forms in their cod liver oil and see what they say. But be sure the omega 3 content is in there. Also don't go too nuts on cod liver oil 🙂 If you want to be sure, let me know how much you are taking and I can give you some feedback in case you want to be 100% sure of what you are doing. Most important thing is to be safe 🙂

Could you also tell me what is in the Purivol CleaComplex in the ingredients? Zinc is awesome, combining the two is even better, they work together I believe.
I totaly forgot that I asked about taking flaxseed oil while taking cod liver oil a few pages back. lol I used to take flaxseed oil for only about 2 weeks before I started cod liver oil. While I was taking it I had more bowel movments. I looked it up a little and I saw that it helps clean the colon and what not. I've been wanting to try some kind of colon cleansing kit but I'd much rather let my healthier diet do the job over time. I was wondering if it would be ok to take both oils to the full amount which is 2 tsp of cod liver and 1 table spoon of flaxseed oil? The flaxseed oil I did take and still have a full bottle of is this gnc brand...
Sitting here writing this I forgot that I do get some flaxseed everyday. I always eat Van's Wheat Free Waffles now that has flaxseed in it which are awesome. Two waffles contains 1000mg of Omega-3 but I usually only eat one in the morning. I want to take more flaxseed but I'm just not sure what would be a safe amount while I'm also taking cod liver oil. Well I'm sure taking the full amount of both shouldn't cause any problems but I just wanna make sure. I'm thinking about taking 2 tsps of flaxseed oil on days I only eat 1 waffle. If I don't eat waffles that day I'll bump up the amount of oil or if I eat 2 or more I'll lower my intake of the oil that day.

Yup it should not be a problem at all 🙂 the omega 3 is not the issue with taking cod liver oil. The only reason we limit it to two doses is because the vitamin A content and not the omega 3. Also since flax contains ALA sources of omega 3 (which only about 10% gets converted down to EPA) I wouldn't worry much 🙂 If it works well for you go with it, but it's not a requirement.
I hope that helped
Yea that def helps. Thanks.
I might just add a little flaxseed here and there for now but up it later on. For some reason I had a weird random breakout a few days ago and I don't want to add more stuff everytime I breakout thinking it will help like I've been known to do. After taking cod liver oil and zinc for a few weeks any big pimple that I got only got less then half the size they normaly would get. Then they would go away/come to a head pretty fast as well as the smaller pimples I get frequently. My skin looked like it was responding well to my healthier diet/supplements but then I got 5 big pimples like the ones I got before and a bunch of smaller ones. Two of them that are on my cheek went really deep into my skin. I had one before like those that went really deep and hurt real bad but felt like if I could get the stuff out it would feel better. I put pressure on it untill I got the stuff that was deep inside out but it ended up cause a scar. I didn't mess with the ones I have now but the one looks like it may leave a slight scar. The only things I did different within the past 2 weeks that might of caused it were eating 1 slice of pizza which I highly doubt did anything or that I went 2-3 nights without cleansing my face in a row and then I didn't wash at night again the other day. I also had 2 big bowls of gluten free quinoa spaghetti the one night and had a little bit of cooked ham a few days in a row but I'm sure they couldn't of done anything. The only thing it could of been was the not cleansing at night for a few days but I still don't believe it would cause these big pimples since I used to sometimes go without cleansing at night when I had a warehouse job. I would be insanely tired from lifting stuff all day and sometimes pass out watching tv before I got a chance to cleanse my face which never really made it worse.
Sorry, I didn't mean to ramble on. lol I just hate it when I get a bad breakout out of no where when things look like they are going well. Everything I've tried for my acne ends up that way and it doesn't make me to happy.
Ok, new here and I've been reading this thread and I had a few questions, if someone could answer them that'd be great.
Should I take Fish Oil Supplements, sounds like 2 or 3 times a day?
Extra Virgin Olive Oil should be added to my diet, about 3 times a day??? I know thats the only oil we use at my house already, but its not added just because.
Also, what nuts are good for you? almonds?
thanks
Can anyone sum up in a few sentences the gist of this thread now please?I read it, and so have been taking fish oil for months. Now this is not enough?!
Actually I can 🙂
Our bodies need fats to function, fair statement? By the RDA standard, we have figured out we should be getting 65 grams a day. Sadly, we also know most fats are too high in omega 6, and no omega 6 is also bad. So what do we do? That's why taking olive oil is good. You can get 65 grams from olive oil (in about 4 to 5 servings) and still get just enough omega 6 without worrying about getting too much. The good news is olive oil stops the bad effects of omega 6 (the metabolites that cause harm).
So I would stick with olive oil and fish oil. After reading up and learning, that is my conclusion thus far, it was the olive oil that does the magic! It will feed your oil glands, nourish your skin, retain water, and keep it healthy, also stop inflammation and help heal. It also combines with omega 3 to provide better effects. Also olive oil is a great antioxidant so there you have it. Also some people use olive oil in a colon cleanse, as opposed to any other oil. Olive oil = Win.
But make sure it's extra virgin olive oil, and be sure you are using a real measurement spoon, not a tablespoon you use to eat with, they are totally different. Measuring out a tablespoon of liquid does not equal a tablespoon amount that you eat with. Get those measuring utensils that are labeled 🙂
Good luck

fish oil (if you are taking capsules then tell me how much then i can direct you)
yes, olive oil I would say 3 to 5 times. I take 5 and it's worth every drop. $4 a week is worth it. But again, be sure you are using a marked measuring spoon that has 1/2 tablespoon written on it. (1 serving is 1 tablsepoon so it would be 2 half tablespoons).
Also make sure it's extra virgin olive oil, not just any kind.
Almonds are great, cashews are too, like the guy below you has said 🙂
Good luck
In the US, there is no legal definition of extra virgin. Therefore, it's all the same crap, everything here says extra virgin, and the US has become a dumping ground for less-than-awesome olive oil from the EU.
I believe "fancy" is a definition close enough to extra virgin. It may be in small print somewhere.
I read this thread and im kind of confused... i bought Fish Body Oils 1000 from GNC and I try to take about 3 with every meal. is that the right stuff? and i take vitaclear from proactive in the morning... its 4 pills and i take that along with my fish oil. it doesnt seem to be helping much so im thinking maybe they dont work well together? any help would be appreciated
