Yeah I'm quite interested to see if they'll have an effect - I don't know that the good cereal in itself cleared me up, I do think my acne is diet related, but it's complicated, because I do eat healthy (no dairy, processed foods besides cereal, sugar, etc) but I'm not sure that alone is enough to keep me clear. I know that fish oil definitely helps my skin ( I can't stand seafood so I don't get any naturally) - The first time I started taking fish oil tablets was the first time I had clear skin since puberty (that would be the clear period I talked about). I didn't realise the link at the time though, and after I ran out of fish oil pills I went on antibiotics to deal with the breakouts that came back - they didn't help really at all so now that I've been off them for a month or so I'm still working on getting my clear skin back with diet heh - So glad to have found the idea of trying these smoothies out
It's funny how we don't always realize at the time when something is helping, but I'm glad you made the connection eventually! Fish oil definitely helps with clear skin. Are you taking acidophilus to help restore the good bacteria that was killed while taking antibiotics?
Yup I've been taking it through almost all the antibiotic course and still now - I wish I hadn't taken the antibiotics - my skin ended up all red and rough and I got those little forehead bumps I've never had before, blurgh. But that's gotten better now
I'm taking acidophilus, fish oil, and the other supplements Romeo recommended in his regimen, barring olive oil.
The right side of my face is staying relatively clear for a few days now, but the left side has maybe 4 pimples that are tiny, but are taking FOREVER to heal, which is a bit odd. I wonder if it's because of the wheatgrass juice and the green smoothies?
Still, I'll get one or two that slowly pops up, but goes away after drinking a green smoothie and wheatgrass.
My diet is really different every day except for dinner:
Breakfast:
A cup of oatmeal with sliced bananas, cinamon, 1/4 cup of pecans, and a scoop of my vanilla powder weight gainer.
Lunch:
Fresh Market brand sourdough bread, boar's head chicken breast lunch meat with dijoun mustard, one pickle, and some greek olives on the side.
Snacks: Anything from an apple a day, cantaloupe, papaya, blackberries, raspberries.
Dinner:
This is a tough one. My mother cooks, so it could be anything. She makes tacos with chili powder in it. I don't put cheese in it or anything else. Just the meat.
She'll make regular chicken. Other times it could be meat. There's lentle soup, beef stew.
Side dishes can be all kinds of vegetables, like broccoli, carrots, squash, spinach salad, etc.
Other side dishes like rice (I try not to eat too much of it), coos coos (sp?), sweet potato.
So does anything here on the list look bad or could aggravate my acne?
Jack,
I'm glad your face is still doing well. The only thing about the smoothies that might make you heal slower is if you're eating a lot of very high-sugar fruits with it, as I think sugar makes you heal more slowly?
I believe in eating a mostly vegan diet, but even so, your diet sounds pretty good! I'm not a fan of processed foods, so I'd recommend leaving out the protein powder, the lunch meat (as most are full of nitrates), and the bread if it's a white bread - I'd suggest a whole grain bread instead and just a serving or two allowing you more room for more nutrient rich foods like veggies. It sounds like you're getting a lot of vegetables in and mostly whole foods, so I think you're on the right track! Your mom sounds like a good cook!! You're lucky! Oh, and pickles are usually very, very high in sodium - not that I think that'll aggravate your acne, but lots of sodium isn't healthy. There's a lot of dietary advice in my first post with links as well if you're wanting to look into it further.
5 days of smoothies, I'm noticing that I've gotten 2 or 3 small painful to the touch bumps that seem like they're going to turn into whiteheads, but then don't, and instead fade away. They're not red at all, so maybe the smoothies are stopping the inflammation before it comes to a head? I consider it an improvement over papules anyway will keep going and see how things look after a few weeks.
how do "green smoothies" compare to adding "powdered greens" to your smoothies, this kind of stuff.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000GWKA2U/
is adding some fresh greens better than that stuff?
see a derm,
Powdered, dried greens can't compare to fresh. It's fine to supplement your diet with powdered greens, but don't replace fresh green for it.
Shadow Yoshi,
2-4 cups a day. The main thing is to get at least one large handful of greens a day - 2 is even better - especially in the beginning if you're trying to clear up your skin.
haha, you are so cute Eddie! I think this information should be pinned too, but luckily, this thread usually seems to stay on the first 2 of pages most of the time I think. My hope is that most new visitors seeking help will find the information regardless. 🙂
You're doing great upon helping people! Also, you're very helpful and sincere.
You have inspired many people!
He he, you're so great. If I needed to be adopted, I would want you to adopt me. lol
I totally understand, no worries! I think it's fine to supplement with powdered greens, such as with alfalfa, dried veggies, etc. However, I just wouldn't let them take the place of fresh spinach, kale, collards, etc. I've read about why this is the case and tried to find an article for you on it but was unable to. It just makes sense though that the quality of the food will be less if it's not fresh, and I just can't fathom how, for example, a couple large tablespoons of dried greens could equal a large handful of blended spinach. If we could get everything we needed in dried, supplemental form, we wouldn't need to eat. Also, you're missing out on a great deal of fiber too when you replace fresh greens for dried, and the fiber is a very important element. I hope this helps.
Pangarl,
I'm pretty sure the stalks aren't nearly as nutritious as the leafy green part for all greens, but I could be wrong! I think they're much too tough and fibrous, so I leave the stalks out of my smoothies, but it's just a personal preference. If you include them, I think it's fine to count them as part of your greens.
stm1975,
This link will answer all of your questions. Dr. Fuhrman uses peer-reviewed studies to draw these conclusions, and he reviews a LOT of studies! If there's a real truth out there concerning all this, my bet is on him to have found it. http://www.drfuhrman.com/shop/GCF.aspx
So, day 17 on green smoothies here - and I'm not sure I'm any better than when I started. My cheeks have stayed mostly clear throughout, and no more of those painful little bumps that came up when I started, but my forehead is going crazy. It's been a sensitive zone ever since I got bumps there on antibiotics but now it seems whiteheads are just springing up on my forehead, which is quite annoying since I've got the rest of my face pretty much cured! It seems every time I knock out one problem another springs up
Looking through my written and photo logs for the past 17 days, I noticed that I was getting better for the first week, to the point where there were no whiteheads large enough to be obvious on days 6/7. Day 7 is when I switched from pears to green apples in my smoothies, and since then my forehead hasn't stopped breaking out. Now, I also had exams during this period, so it could just be stress/lack of sleep, but it does seem suspicious, espescially since this is my first time eating apples in a long time. I've never really heard of apples breaking someone out, is that possible?
Sorry to vent on here I get frustrated when I can't work out cause and effect
I have drinking green smoothies for few months now everyday and I dont think it has helped with my acne. But since it's healthy, I'll just continue drinking it anymore.
My green smoothie consists of
1 apple
2 bananas
a bunch of leafy vegetables (spinach etc)
I use a different vegetable everyday.
